Well I’ll take a shot at this and see if I can get a fairly straight answer. The latest press on ET has it dubbed as free and you do not need RTCW. I guess I’m confused about this since EvenBalance has been tapped for ET and will be handling CD Key verification. So if that is the case then somewhere there is a CD needed of some sort to validate ET?
Would I be “warm” to assume that ET is a free download if you already have RTCW and therfore the CD Key validation will be one’s existing CD Key from RTCW? And it would then appear that future RTCW Cd’s will be sold with Enemy Territory included? This would be logical for a return of investment. I’m sure this is not a charity project, right?
Well from what i’ve heard ET will not require the original RTCW too play, not too mention if it’s free there would be no need for CD Key Verification, cause it’ll be freely distributed. A CD- Key is used for security purposes and too prove you purchased the game. If it’s free, there ain’t no need for a CD Key verification or a CD Key in general.
This still does not a answer my question. On April 11th, Even Balance (Punk Buster) released a news statement and the following was included in the statement: “Even Balance will also be handling CDKEY registration and authentication as part of a new integrated CDKEY / GuidAuth server system Even Balance is developing especially for Enemy Territory.”
You see the part, “especially for Enemy Territory?” This is straight off Even Balance’s web site! Somewhere there will be a CD key involved somehow, free or not it seems.
then I would guess, that you prolly get a wonid/cdkey/serial/guidauth that generates itself when you join your first et online battle(if it’s get banned you need to reinstall et)…that would sound logical to me, but dunno, how it actually will be handled
Then there is the issue of money. You can’t tell me that Activision, Splash Damage and Even Balance are all making their respective contributions towards Enemy Territory and not expecting any monitary gain?

Well, it’s seems pretty obvious that you may just get a CD Key when you download Enemy Territory, 1 per person i’m assuming, and well too make the CD Key thing (If used even) actually be for security reasons you would HAVE too register Enemy Territory, like i said 1 per person. Althought this don’t totally aleviate misuse of the above method, as even retail games have piracy and all that. But i’m sure ET and Splash Damage have formulated a method, but i bet it’s like the method i listed above.
Still doesn’t add up. You can’t tell me that all of these companies are doing all of this for free. Why, when they could bundle ET into a new RTCW package and sell it to new RTCW customers and let existing RTCW players get ET for free as a download using your existing CD key. Now that makes more sense.
Then when it comes to PunkBuster anyone who gets banned can just download again?
And another thing why are they so tight lipped about it then? If it is all for free they have nothing to loose by telling us what the story is on all of this. As you can see from my original post, no one has replied from Splash Damage.
hellchick (of id) has repeatedly stated that it will be a completely free, standalone download, not requiring RTCW.
Players will NOT need Return to Castle Wolfenstein to play Enemy Territory (or the ET test we’re releasing soon). ET is a free stand-alone game, so anyone who wants to play will be able to download it.
How effective can punkbuster be if every time someone gets banned, they just reinstall?
[/quote]
yeah, I know, but it’s better than if they just rejoin, or?
Sure that register-thing is more secure, but uhm, I really hate to register, and guess how many people will not register with their realnames(and with fake email accounts of course), so they just need to re-register…
You got me man, i’m sure they got something worked out though, maybe they got a certain set of CD-Key’s and the’ll give all of them too punkbuster and have some sort of CD Key Verification or something, who knows. As for the tight lipped stuff, you got me, we pretty much know everything that’s included anyway, it’s pretty much all the same stuff they had in the game before, back when it was previewed all the time, so why post that list again, if we already know what it is anyway.
Also the hush, hush on the release, well it makes sense in that department. As for why there offereing it for free, was the fact that thousands of people were griping on the fact they had too buy a new game (I did see it when they first announced ET, and that’s of course it’s an assumption, i don’t know if it’s true or not too be the reason for ET’s
free status or not, but i noticed alot of forum posts on that isssue) but still, it isn’t a bad thing offering a game for free, i give props too SD and Activision for doing that. Especially in today’s capitolist economy.
Oh and the tight lipped on the bots issue, is either A. that’s why they cancelled ET going retail and they have no intensions on releasing bots of any kind (i’m starting too lean towards this one, i was really hoping for them bots, i woulda paid $50 alone just for the bots) or B. there working on them and weither or not there future in ET is certain or not, they currently don’t know. Either way it still don’t make it bad, i heard they worked on the netcode too make the game better for us 56k folk, i’d still love bots, but i can wait.
Last thing i heard is that SD started close cooperation with the NSA :
when you register, you will have to make fingerprints on a piece of paper, send it to the NSA, and they will trace you back from there on :
Once they done with that, they will ask you to go to a certain phonebooth on 15th Street, where you will have to call a phonenumber they handed out to you : The secret word that will enable the secret passage can then be spoken out.
btw, the secret word is ‘penguin’
As what i’ve heard, they will take several DNA-samples too, to be sure only one registers.
And you are with Spash Damage? Because according to EvenBalance ET will require GUID authentication. So explain to me how this will work with a free download? Since I run two game servers, I would like to know how we will be able to police our servers if we cannot ban unruley players.
they are working on it. Check Lekdevils replies on the relatively short and easy to read and fast accessible forumthread on pw.com (yeah, i’m too lazy and drunk to link you but it’s the thread with et in topi titel and it’s really long like 250 replies)
Yeah, the only problems is that the laws in some European countries do not allow that, so I hope they will find something to bypass them. If not, ET can not be released at all. (I was thinking of urinal samples, which if they would succeed in registering splashdamage as a pharmaceutical company, would be no problem. Gamers throughout Europe just should pee in a little basket and send it to London. They (SD) would also get their weed a lot cheaper if they were a pharmaceutical company)
I was just talking about that with a friend, and even taking a look at Splash Damage and Castle Wolfenstein sites we couldn’t be sure if Enemy Territory will be really free or the player will need the RtCW CD-KEY.
He asked me what would those companies gain in releasing the ET MP for free, well, my guess is that it’ll be an awesome marketing move. Here in Brazil unfortunely the RtCW didn’t quite succeded. We have less then 10 clans and only one or two participating on major North American leagues so far. I think that releasing the free ET MP will tease these gamers to buy future RtCW sequences and other products. I belive that the same applies to other countries. We at Latin America are only beggining to comprehend the possibilities of gaming market. So, any major approach (and releasing the Enemy Territory for free is a major approach), will revert a lot to those companies.
We are eagerly looking forward to see the ET just as it is, and damn, if it’s really free I can’t imagine what will happen with Half Life and other games. I can only tell that here in Brazil and also Argentina we’ll see lots and lots of players and clans adopting the ET as their main online game.
