FOV while sprinting, jumping, etc.

Yeah, some of this stuff sounds like they were working on the PC stuff weeks ago, did not completely finish it and had no chance to until release day.

Stuff like that one map that seems to disable all sounds beside the beeping of command posts make it look like there has been barely any QA at all.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved every game SD released and I am very sure I will love Brink just as much. There already have been a lot of positive comments on gameplay itself from W:ET and Quake Wars veterans. I am very optimistic the core PC fanbase will eventually be very pleased with Brink.

Obvious glitches and oversights like the sound problem, huge performance issues and strange console cvars/ leftover cvars might scare of a lot of players new to SD games though. And that is just sad.

edit
Hi all,

This issue has been addressed and will be with you via an update very shortly.

Once you recieve the update, the cvar for changing fov is now ‘ui_fov’ rather than the previous ‘g_fov’.

On a side note, there is no aim assist on the PC version at all. :)
Thanks for the quick response and that’s good to hear.
Given the pace you guys are fixing this stuff a lot of this will be just fine come Friday. It’s not like most of this won’t be fixed with just a few early patches. Just somewhat perplexing how some of the more obvious glitches got into the release build.

You rock, SD showing great day1 effort! way to go!
Im hyped for friday!
However since you will probably reading this, it would be awesome to adress the sound problems? Theres one map that is completely silent. The one where you have to blow up the door and deliver the can at night, dont know the name.

None taken, but:

“1542 cvars listed”

…I’ll give you 1542 guesses why.

So this ui_fov will change fov everywhere, sprinting, shooting, standing, picking your nose etc?

(SRS-Kap) #45

Players should ignore the pm_sprintfov and pmsprintburstfov values completely.

(SRS-Kap) #46

ui_fov applies to your general movement and shooting from the hip and picking your nose
Naturally, weapons can override this for actions such as ironsighting etc…

Well, now you made me look like a complete tool - but rightfully so.

I was just thinking my fov changing every time I spring or use smart would be the first thing for me to notice during playtesting. The same goes for a map without working sounds. That is why I was somewhat perplexed at first. I have been working as QA myself a couple of years ago so I probably should know better. I guess I am just spoiled by W:ET and Quake Wars.

Given the size of projects like Brink stuff like this is bound to happen and in the end his it is a price well paid for the sheer amount of customization you guys give us in every single game. In this case it sounds like wont even be an issue for us EU players at all.

(oRuin) #48

I would like to know this too, could you please get back to us with the details on this change?

Cheers

Registered to say this… While in general I think it’s poor form to give snide answers like this I’ll overlook it this time. But you need a better excuse for this issue, because even if there are 1542 cvars, this is not some obscure minor side issue that only affects a handful of people. I, like I’m sure thousands of others, immediately got into the console and tried to figure out how to change FOV before doing anything else at all in-game. On a widescreen, 70 fov simply feels like I’m crawling around.

Really, I think you could make an argument that changing FOV is probably THE most important thing you can do in the console - I actually expected it to be in the menu configs since a lot of even console ports (bfbc2) will give us this courtesy. Anyway, whoever was in charge of making the console usable for players clearly had a failure here, and not because changing FOV is an edge use-case.

Edit to say, I don’t mean to be rude, I do really appreciate the quick response for a fix, and I hope this type of service continues… I do really like the game and I want it to succeed. I know release day can be tough, so I’m sorry to add to that. Cheers

This…

(dazman76) #51

Give them chance guys  They’re working flat out to get this stuff fixed, and you can be sure it means more to them than it does to your average EA-owned dev studio  I know, broken on release day sucks and I don’t even have the game yet - but it WILL be sorted, and you WILL get your info

:oppressor:

(iezza) #52

Whats so freaking important for field of view/?

(dazman76) #53

Not feeling like your face is pressed against the lens of a camera? Humans have far more FOV than 70 degrees (some of which is admittedly out of focus and therefore not hugely relevant), and it often feels cramped when it’s set low. I get the wrong “feeling” between mouse and camera, but I don’t adjust it too high - just enough to make the camera rotation feel more natural, I guess.

EDIT: That is to say, when FOV is low, it feels like your head is tiny when rotating the camera - essentially the camera is attached to a pencil, which is turning. Higher FOV thickens the pencil so it’s more like your neck, and therefore camera rotation feels more natural
Oh yes, it’s pm_sprintfov now… dann changed it a while back.

[edit]

OH! It’s a networked CVAR when it shouldn’t be.

Dann is working on this issue, THIS VERY SECOND. Went upstairs and he was already on it. Next patch, I am guessing.
THIS SHOULD BE A PATCH NOW… i’m sad i try to plan on a game being releaesed with someone actually say ‘hold… there is this bug… we gotta fix it before release’ instead of making us wait and wait and then somehow let all this **** get past you.

(DonkeyDong) #55
None taken, but:

that’s sad. if sd hired me i’d have unit tests and regression testing and nothing would get into production from qa or dev (ie the engies), without everything being tested… and if the thought ‘oh wait that’d be expensive’ then tone down the damn multiplayer games to products you can ACTUALLY RELEASE …

but i’m an engie and not qa. but i’ve become very fimilular with this stuff because where i work we don’t put out without atleast knowing it works.

you can say this, and we should… way too many crap coming out lately

what we probably really need is CALL OF DUTY to make a brink game. they have the money and the people backing. they put out games that is atleast playable… even if it is by half brains

(SockDog) #57

@Etek - I’m playing some SP because I prefer to feel out the game, controls and tweak at my own pace rather than screwing around in an online match

@Bezzy & SRS-Kap - Thanks for the quick response. Can we expect small hotfixes to trickle down via Steam more often than regular patches?

@TheHorde - People please, have some respect and perspective here and keep the nerd rage firing at SD and Bethesda if you feel the need not the few team members who are working with us to resolve stuff.

(Melanchthon) #58

I agree Sockdog, it’s great that they’ve acknowledged these issues and seem to be working quickly to resolve them.

(Melanchthon) #59

Has this been fixed yet? Just wondering?
So this ui_fov will change fov everywhere, sprinting, shooting, standing, picking your nose etc?
Good question, would like the answer to this as well.

Preloaded last night, and when I opened Steam tonight it downloaded an update - was it already pushed out?
