Flame Thrower in ETQW

(Nail) #41

Flamethrowers have not been part of the US military since 1978, when the Department of Defense unilaterally decided to end their use, out of concerns that the public found such weapons inhumane (although fire-based weapons are not banned under international law).

Ive brain stormed some deas today and came up with two, a plasma launcher much like the flamer, and (my personal fav) a Acid launcher imagine a cool shader that is laid over the victim and as they burn/melt away, add a little animation and how sweet would that look? Seeing the marine look at his own arm as is melts away! Joy!

Edit: oh and of course you can see it sear the landscape with small acidy smoke that arises from surfaces. Mebbe even normal map overlay sprites that add to the melting/eating effect? Like in fear how bullets damage walls and surfaces.

ET:QW is susposed to feature huge maps. The flamethrower really won’t thrive in that environment.

I think QW will feature narrow corridors as well but, for a change, the flamethrower could be a whole different weapon, not used mainly to inflict direct damage.
Think of it as a portable napalm gun: you shoot on the floor while moving and add temporary hazzard zones to the map, inflicting low dps to whatever crosses it.

The more you shoot on a spot, the longer the flames last get but the smaller the area you can set on fire.
There will be balancing issues, of course, but it’s the FT usefulness we’re discussing here.

Heh, I originally read it as “…inflicting low FPS to whatever crosses it.” - had to read it again.

But, on second thought, perhaps low FPS would be effective for keeping players out of an area…

Could you imagine all the snivelling and crying about the flamethrower if that was the case?

Truthfully, I’d like to seethe flamethrower added for two reasons:

I love the smell of burnt strogg in the morning.

As a close range vehicle ravager.

A quad bike struck by a flame thrower tends to go up in smoke. A flaming goliath would just look too awesome. Perhaps larger vehicles would take longer to ‘catch’ on fire, or they just might need to be hosed down.

Flame adds much fun to the game. Sometimes you just feel like being a punk and putting some flame on a chokepoint, and it feels great.
Acid sprays would be cool too.
Some form of a volumetric weapon…

Most disadvantages of flamer disappear once you put it on a fast or medium-speed vehicle.
I suppose there are 2 real reasons behind no flamethrower in ET:QW :

  • it may be hard to do. No Doom3 engine game has flamethrower, so far. Perpixel lightning might complicate things.
  • flamer lags. All weapons with lots of projectiles/NO HITSCAN lag. Flamer lags, q2 hyperblaster lags. I suppose q3 plasmagun doesn’t, because projectiles are so fast there are only few of them in the air in any given moment.

So no one likes my acid launcher idea…bummer. Cant I get any feed back on the acid launcher?

Well it worked for the stairwells on mp_dam. :blah:

This did not end the use of napalm, white phosphorus or other incendiaries, although the US did subsequently abandon napalm as well.

However, that is all quite beside the point for ET:QW. First of all, the GDF is global, so just because the US and much of the western world has abondoned these weapons doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be available. More importantly, “Realism” in ET:QW means what would we be willing to use against an all out invasion by human eating cyborgs. In that context, public resistance to ‘inhumane’ weapons is likely to be minimal. If flame weapons were effective, they would be used. They are also relatively simple, so any army capable of fielding tanks and choppers could certainly have them.

The strogg don’t seem concerned by the whether the collection of stroyent humane, so they could obviously use flame weapons too, although perhaps it would damage the product :moo:

Watch out for the rake with a flamethrower attachment!

What hell you do you think the rocket launchers gonna do? Make em grow flowers out their ass?

(jjpron) #52

I’m terribly sorry to bring this up, but it needs to be addressed:
Can they make stroyent out of tapirs?

(Dazzamac) #53

Chargrilled makes for a fuller flavour of stroyant

(kamikazee) #54

Hmmm, “Grilled” taste. Like the sound of that.

I’ll Take my stroytant extra crispy thanks, finger lickin good!

(Gringo) #56

Lets face the facts, whether they can or not is irrelevant. The safety of all tapirs and the tapir way of life is the primary mission objective of the GDF forces.

LOL!

(kamikazee) #58

Are you a copycat or did you forget the quote tags?

(Nail) #59

No one seems to realize that the Tapirs ARE the flame throwers, why else that schnozzle

(kamikazee) #60

Must be some futuristic dragon-inbreed tapir species then.

What marvelous things we might see in the future…
