ETQW for the next gen consoles confirmed

(McAfee) #21

I’m pretty sure the console versions will be stripped down from the PC version, and not the other way around. And as in the past, they will have their own online community.

I really doubt we will see both PC and console players on the same server. The console idea is not new, and is hinted on some of the old interviews. If I remember correctly, the devs don’t mind consoles (and their controllers) because all players would basicly be on the same playing field. You can even add a bit of aiding to the game mecanics to compensate any lack of control and precision.

Personally I think keyboard and mouse are far superior for first person shooters than a gamepad. Especially if you take into account all the non-shooting stuff you have to do. We have almost 10 times more buttons. Attempts at solving this problem usually results in crappy PC versions.

An older reason, which seems to be on the path of being a non-issue, are the patches. PC versions are easier to patch. But now, with most nextgen console having harddrives, maybe this won’t be a problem.

Similar to above: New Content. While hard drives could help here too, it might only be good enough for official content. Things might not go smooth for the community content.

Just look at it this way, it’s hard to keep the Mac and PC community paired up, it’s going to be a lot harder to for the Console and PC. This doesn’t mean I’m against their existance. But if there are going to be compromises, i’d rather see the split communities.

Hmmm, Splash Damage makes wonderful PC online multiplayer, some “other guys” port it to console. I see no reason for concern, except for maybe “other guys”

(Zenix) #23

How do the SD guys feel about someone else producing their versions of your baby?

Nerve are the guys that developed RTCW mp, which is essentially the first version on Enemy Territory. I think they can handle it.

Not too sure about these Z-Axis guys though…

As both a console and pc user I have to tell you: don’t be so shortsighted!

It may not seem so to most pc gamers, but consoles have a lot of potential. The way the technology and media industry is developing it will, in not so distant future, lead to haveing consoles and pc games, communities, and eventualy platforms themselves, merging together, and I see nothing wrong with that. What is being done here is a part of making firist steps to this future. Thats is why it may seem clumsy, maybe even unnecessary, but when looking at the big picture I think we will all benefit form this.
So don’t rant at the changes, adjust to them.

(Dr_Tenma) #25

Did they ever release any more info about custom map file sizes? Searching the forums gives way too many results for me, and I all I can remember off the top of my head is that one interview where they said the megatexture was 500mb when fully compressed.

That already makes me shudder, and I don’t know how consoles are going to handle more than the original number of maps. Assuming they want to have all sorts of other game data on their console HDs of course.

(mortis) #26

Mappers do not have to use megatextures, thus conventional map file sizes are still possible. I believe the stated range for megatextures was 50-500MB depending on your quality threshold. Given the realities of the internets, unless some p2p redistribution tool ships with the game, I will be /disconnect-ing from servers with those kind of maps. Hopefully there will be a “add this to my desired downloads” box to check so that it can be downloaded at 2 a.m. when I’m asleep.

(The Pope) #27

Seeing a train coming to run you over and not liking it isn’t short sighted. Most PC gamers like PC gaming and don’t want it to be turned into console gaming only more expensive. If that ever does happen, my adjustment to the changes will be to quit gaming.

(CodE-E) #28

I’m really not glad to hear about this. Multiplatform releases are such a bad trend, imho.

FPS games are meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard. I guess it’s not my concern if the console kiddies wanna play ET:QW on their Xbox or PS3, but I’m sure this means at least a small delay for the real (PC) version.

The PC version better not get infected with consolitis.

(zig-zag) #29

PC is where the mods/custom maps will be at, so ultimately it will be the better version. 16 players is not too low when played competitively, so if anything it would stiff be incredibly fun.

(Invisible421) #30

don’t forget about xbox live. maybe new maps will be made that they can download… i don’t know, i still will always prefer the pc to console gaming. Except maybe the wii, but with lack of games it’s gathering dust and quite rapidly.

(signofzeta) #31

What I don’t get is this. Why are you guys think it is bad to port quake wars to xbox 360 and/or PS3?

The porting does not affect PC gamers. They just get a stripped down version and the PC version will be whatever SD makes it.

If you have a good PC, why do you even care about the console versions?

I think it is only fair for those who have consoles and not enough cash to buy a high end PC. You know a PS3 is like around $700 and a brand new PC with good graphics card is more than $1000.

I made up an analogy that might make sense.

Let’s say PC gamers are soldiers and console gamers are engineers. Let’s say that a dynamite is planted at some objective and the engies must diffuse it. You also cannot change class. If you are a soldier, you would continue to do soldier stuff with your heavy weapons while engies diffuse the dynamite.

So PC people just worry about the PC version since the console version will have no effect on the PC version. Just as how a soldier cannot do anything about a planted dynamite.

I can’t say I’m necessarily happy about this personally. I’m looking at what happened with CoD2.

For those who don’t play it they had an agreement with Microsoft that restricted them from adding things to the game because “it wouldn’t be fair to the console gamers.”

Specifically, they wouldn’t release the vehicle code for MP due to the 360. There is more but that coupled along with the above statement made me not want to purchase another CoD game. It was a bit of a let down to know they dumbed down the game for console. I have nothing personal against console. I just don’t trust things like this now since CoD2.

I was a happy camper up until I read this post. Now, I am somewhat nervous about what we will be receiving upon release. I can only hope SD didn’t get bent over like IW did.

(bobjones) #33

i dont want to think about how disappointing it would be if we found out they were planning a simultaneous release…that would just about kill me

what would we be looking at then? fall at best?

(SCDS_reyalP) #34

Indeed, it’s fairly common for game developed to work on both to feel dumbed down on a PC. The reaction here isn’t “omgz consoles suxor pc rulzors”, it’s just a wish not to see a game that would otherwise have lot of depth turned into something that plays well with eight buttons.

The difference is SDs masters are id, and many SDers themselves seem quite into games

(meisterbrau) #35

this was the best news i read since… well… ever!

all i hope is, that the xp system will be exactly the same as for the pc version.

the ones who think fps only works with mouse and keyboard are just not flexible enough to adopt something new. cod3 works perfectly with the controler and its the only game for consoles that comes at least close to the experience of et. sadly the xp system is not the same.

as i can’t afford a new pc for the next 2 years, i am really glad to hear, that the sequel of the best game ever will be playable on console!

(CodE-E) #36

Yeah, for like $5 per map or something ridiculous like that.

Ever heard of Bethesda and their game Oblivion? That game was gonna rock, but because they were encouraged to charge money for updates on the Microsoft platform, they decided to do it on PC as well. Instead of patching all the bugs in their game, they just released lots of lame rip-off mini-addons which one had to pay for.

(leifhv) #37

Of course an FPS can work without a mouse and keyboard…but it doesn’t work (play) as good.

You seem to imply that it’s possible to ‘adapt’ to playing with a controller so that you can play as well as you can with a keyboard+mouse and that is just not true.

Cod3 is nothing like ET…they are both FPS games in a WW2 setting but thats where the similarities end. Also, the XP system is hardly the most important attribute of ET.

its all about having fun. for me it is as much fun to play with the controler as it is with k+m, if the game is fun to play and the contorls are adequatly implementet for the imput device.

this does not imply that it is the same thing. nether, that cross platform would work with a game like et:qw

the good thing about controlers is, that playing is much more relaxed than with k+m. nevertheless aiming is much more accurate with the mouse and games are faster.
but this doesen’t make all the fun of a game (at least IMHO)

Cod3 is nothing like ET…they are both FPS games in a WW2 setting but thats where the similarities end. Also, the XP system is hardly the most important attribute of ET.

cod3 has medics and other classes (i only talk about mp. i never played sp) and it has sort of an xp system. this makes it similar to et (again IMHO). also the war mode makes it kind of objective orienteted. so you will always know, where the action is and it is centered around a sweet spot (as sd calls it)

the major advantage of xp is, that it encourages team play, even when playing on public servers. every player is interessted to use the abilities of his class in order to gather xp, and not going for kills only. this makes et so fun to play. but you are right, if you point out, that it is not the only thing, that makes et so great.

(ayatollah) #39

That is just lies, XP helps people who play with the team in mind, but it certainly doesn’t encourage teamplay. How many rambo medics do you see racking up the kills and XP, while not reviving one single person and keeping all the medpacks to himself?

(Gringo) #40

Very true, XP is not always fully conducive to team play and that goes for all classes!
