ET Source Code released

(RocketGrrl [SWE]) #1

I read that Activision released the ET-Source code, I guess we can hope for ET-TV in the near future then?

(Kendle) #2

Nope. ET-TV requires the Quake3 engine source code, not just the ET source. Bani has had ET source for a while remember and even he can’t make ET-TV. :frowning:

(pgh) #3

Aint Q3 source been out for ages tho? :stuck_out_tongue:

(Fusen) #4

how did they makr WTV? as wouldn’t they ened q3 soruce for that?

(pgh) #5

Im presuming WTV and ETTV etc is just the same as GTV for Quake3? Just changed alot?

(Kendle) #6

Yep, the guy who made WolfTV (and GTV) has the Quake3 engine code, but isn’t interested in making ET-TV (he’s been asked loads) and won’t hand over the code for GTV/WTV to Bani or anyone else to make ET-TV.

And as far as I know the Quake3 engine code isn’t available for free. Quake3 game code maybe, but a game and the engine it runs on are 2 different things. Bani already has the ET game code, and now so will many others, but no-one has the engine source required to make ET-TV apart from one guy who’s so far refused to make it.

edit: Take a look at this page:- http://www.idsoftware.com/business/technology/

It says the Quake3 engine is available at a cost of $250,000. How about we all chip in so Bani can make ET-TV?

/me phones myg0t

“I want me some code… well, ET-TV.”

Disclaimer: The above is related to the rumours that it was myg0t clan who hacked valve for the source of HL2. It has not been proven… (Saving my ass :>)

I was thinking about making a small mod that gives the Panzer more realism, but it looks like the guys at Splashdamage already wanted to do that but just didn’t have the time to finish it:

void Weapon_Panzerfaust_Fire( gentity_t *ent ) {
	gentity_t	*m;

	m = fire_rocket (ent, muzzleEffect, forward);

//	VectorAdd( m->s.pos.trDelta, ent->client->ps.velocity, m->s.pos.trDelta );	// "real" physics
}

The 250k is for when you want to base a game on Quake 3, ET-TV would not be a full game and I think Id would be interested in helping out for a lower price.

(RR2DO2) #11

Actually it was a gameplay decision in the end iirc.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Bani had asked ID about this and he said the response “was not no”, which I guess leaves some room for hope.

However, putting my overly cynical head on for the moment, I don’t think ID want ET-TV because I don’t think they ever intended it to be played at Clan level (the Campaign mode, XP system, big unbalanced maps, etc., hardly makes ET a Clan-friendly game “out of the box” like RTCW was and COD is, for example). I think their brief to SD was make a game based on RTCW that would keep people playing publics for a while until the next “big thing” is released, but not to the extent that ET itself would be seen as the next big thing, seeing as it’s free. (they couldn’t charge money for it as it has no Single-player).

(pgh) #14

It wasnt meant to be free.
It was supposed to containt a single player.

It was another game for iD and Activision and if they didnt want it they wouldnt have gone through with it. We can thank SD for putting that much work into it making them the decision to only keep it going. I honestly do not think that iD once turned round and thought ‘lets create a game till we create another one’?

Clan Level? It has SW mode. You can still do Campaign mode with clans. Im sure the things like the XP system and large maps are there just for sake of making the whole thing a bit more challenging than running about shooting each other or stealing a flag and running away. Its a change, an experiment if I may.

And instead of having all these random threads and posts stating things about ET:TV etc… why not just get a petition online together and show them how much people want it and how bad? If theres enough demand then im sure they will have no choice.

(Hydra) #15

What was the reason? As it is now the Panzer is mostly used in a one-on-one fashion, and the current panzer is IMHO too much an ‘arcade’ weapon. You would NEVER get that kind of accuracy with such a weapon.

The CoD (hope that one isn’t a cure, and don’t worry, ET is a better MP game IMHO) one is better IMHO (has a big spread) but still is nowhere near being realistic. Panzers should be effective tank killers, not effictive infantry killers.

Edit: Do you know if the ‘real’ physics work (e.g. NOT crash the game)?

(Hydra) #16

He is Arnout? grin He’s mentioned all over the source, lots of discussions between him and Gordon:

// Arnout: invisible entities can’t be touched
// Gordon: radiant tabs arnout! :wink:

:smiley:

(Kendle) #17

Like I say Piggy, I’m being overly cynical I know. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what SD have done with ET, but I don’t think, now that it is free, that ID want ET-TV.

The lack of ET-TV could be the one thing that’s preventing ET becoming the next Counterstrike (a free mod of a retail game that’s now the undisputed world’s No.1 online game). The difference is, to play Counterstrike you either need to buy Half-Life or the retail version of Counterstrike. A totally free game, like ET, played at the highest level of competition, is going to make it hard for ID or anyone to sell future games of the same or similar genre.

The fact that ET has a SW mode, and contains OSP code, I think is merely a nod towards the Clan community. I don’t think SD really gave much thought as to how or if it could be played in top level competition.

(senator) #18

Not quite. It’s true that the PF was mainly designed to kill tanks but the HEAT warhead was also efficient against enemies behind cover (log bunkers) and should have a quite noticeable effect against infantry, after all the warhead detonates and will transform into hundreds of deadly shrapnell… I don’t want to stand right next to an exploding Pf100 :wink:

(pgh) #19

Yeh Hydra.

Arnout = RR2 (Lead Programmer afaik)
Gordon = djbob (Programmer/Mapper/Scripter) + Author of bobtoolz.

(TFate) #20

I think the panzerfaust should’ve had a sink rate. It wouldn’t have affected gameplay too much, just make it harder to 'faust enemies across the map.
