ET Freezes computer completely.

Hey guys, new guy, new reader.
I’ve got a pickle where after I’ve entered an ET match, 20 seconds in the computer freezes completely. With no other option but to reset. I’ve searched the forums for this problem but nothing seemed to come up. But has anyone had this problem? Its a pain in the butt majorly. Thanks in advance.

edit: also may want to note that i was recently attacked by a whole bunch of spyware and malware bugs and what not. whether this has an effect on et, i’m not but its only just happened last night, when i found the spyware. cheers

Did you try… disabling punkbuster and playing on non-pb servers for a while? If it’s fine there, the problem is punkbuster :(. You need to run ET as an admin-privileges user.
How many .pk3s are there in your etmain / etpro directories?

Is all the spyware gone? Run adaware / spybot, or microsoft’s anti-spyware thing :slight_smile:

well i’ve done my best to remove all of the spyware, using hijackthis, msconfig, spybot s&d, and i also got swamped by a whole lot of viruses too :S
most of the servers i play on are et pro, so that might make it a different problem i’m guessing, but i recently chucked a large number of
pk3’s into my etmain, at least 20 for maps and such.
my users the only user, has full admin privileges and such :stuck_out_tongue: but otherwise :frowning: i dont know what could be causing it, but i will try punkbuster, or even
etmain servers for a while, see if etpro’s the problem. thanks alot mate

edit: i tried a non pb-server, (hard to find one with good ping as i’m aussie :P), with etpro 3.2.0, the same mod i play with on my usual servers (game arena) and found that i was able to play, and the computer would not freeze. so i’ve determined its a punkbuster problem, and i’m just going to try and update pb, although i have a feeling this wont work.
i reinstalled et to fix the problem before i tried a non-pb server and i still had the problem, now i’ve tried non-pb, updating doesnt make sense as its a new et installation. but yeah, letcha how it goes, thanks again

I seem to be having the same problem… but not with ETpro… but with etpub :S It’s weird… I play 5 seconds then it freezes…

What do I have to do to solve this then?

try changing your /pb_system from 0 to 1, or 1 to 0… do /pb_system <ENTER KEY> to find out what it’s set to now.
I’m just guessing, but it’s worth a try :stuck_out_tongue:

also try updating pb manually

  • Go to a DOS prompt
  • Navigate to the pb directory (should be a subdirectory of the main game directory)
  • Type pbweb to start pb update

You can download ‘pbweb’.exe @ http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbweb.exe, put it in /pb/ :slight_smile:

Its probably a conflict between Punkbuster and one of your drivers.

Try updating your video and motherboard (chipset) drivers.

Or post your system specs.

I am having this problem to, It freezes after im playing for about 1-3 minutes. And plays the last 1 second of sound over and over. And the only way I can get ot of it is to restart my computer.

I fully believe this to be a punkbuster issue. I’ve had a few people have this EXACT same issue. At first I thought it was my mod in particular, but other mods are doing this as well (except for etpro, of course, cuz most etpro servers don’t use PB). This happened a couple of weeks ago, after the whole etkey deletion stuff. Sounds like a driver/hardware conflict to me, obviously, but I do not yet know the fix.

there is an issue with pb and nforce chipset, the latest nforce drivers are supposed to fix it

simply wrong. most ETPro servers DO use PB, and it only happens to me on ETPro 3.2.0 servers with PB enabled because that’s all i play.

Just did a quick survey with ASE and here are the results:

ETPro PB off servers: 259
ETPro PB on servers: 2374

So a full 90% of ETPro servers have PB on.

I had the locking problem with Q3… was a heat issue.

Even if I don’t play very much at the moment, I noticed the same problem and opened a trouble ticket. This is the response I received from Punkbuster:

We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix at the moment. Thanks for your notification.

Come on now! post your system specs if your ET is crashing/freezing, you might help yourself and lots of others.
