ET crashes my system

(Tremo) #1

After playing ET for anywhere from a couple to several minutes, my machine hangs requiring a complete reboot. Also when it hangs, the sound seems to loop. The crash is a hard crash, requiring that I hit the front panel button to force a reboot.

Machine is an AMD 1800+ with 512M DDR, a GF4-4600 graphics card and a big-assed hard drive. OS is Win2k with the latest service packs, patches, etc… I’m also running Nortion antivirus and Internet security.

Any ideas what is causing this? Thanks.

I had the same problems, too…

Then I opened my machine and saw that the fan on the gfx-Board was stuck, I unmounted it, cleaned it, a bit oil and…it runs like hell again!

All the games, just E.T, just OpenGL games or D3D games?.

man, i have excactly the same problem :banghead:
i have a:
P4 1,8 GHz, 512 mb ram, 40 gb, 64 mb geforce 2.

(senator) #5

have you read this thread and made sure that that’s not your problem (system overheating, low power supply) ?

(Tremo) #6

I have an Enermax 460 Watt power supply. I have 3 case fans. The GF4 card has 2 fans and a big-assed heatsink (it’s a Leadtek). I really think that it’s not an overheating or power supply issue. The machine can be runing all day and the only time it hangs is with ET. Also, it seems to hang on Punkbuster servers.

Try shutting down ALL programs that are not essentially needed to play ET (yes, even the Firewall), if your computer keeps crashing we’ve at least narrowed the possibilities down to Hardware (unlikely, as you say), ET/Win2000 compatibility problems (2000 was never meant to be an OS for games, if you can get your hands on XP you might want to try that) or, last but not least, space aliens attacking your computer through an interdimensional rift :moo:

A freeze-up with the sound looping is the symptom of being unable to connect to the punkbuster server at evenbalance.com. Normally this happens when you’re starting the game, of course, or when you first toggle PB on. I don’t know if it can also happen if their system goes down while you’re playing. (I also don’t know if you’re normally unable to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete)

weeEEEEeee, i had the same problem as dubya, and i fixed it
playing with an open cabinet really works, weeee…

If it crashes with the sound played in loops, you have to reboot anyway so you might as well enter the BIOS and check your CPU temperature. Most modern motherboards have a “power” menue with a hardware monitor, that can display temperature, so you can make sure if it really is a problem with overheating or not.

Mine ET also crashed and aye, it was overheat… so I simply pushed the limit up by 5° so I can play until monday and will then buy a more powerful cpu-cooler

Didn’t have any problems with this game, but did have similar stuff with SOF2. Solved it by upping the com_soundmegs. PC crashed after a few minutes, sound kept on looping. Did many searches on the internet, after a week I found something on Activision’s support site.

Give it a try (if you have enough ram).

(warkrime) #12

do this before starting a game: /set pb_system 1

(0ran63) #13

what would typing that do?

(Meadow) #14

alot of friends had the same problem… the solution:
add this to your config(located in “etmain” and in your profile folder):

seta pb_system 1

Got the same problem m8’s. Used to be able to play, but now my system crashes randomly. Sometimes I can play for about an hour, sometimes it crashes within minutes. Temperature is fine, tried the pb_system 1 switch, tried tweaking down agp speed to 2x, and about a million other BIOS settings, tried reinstalling Via 4-in-1’s, Nvidia drivers, and finally the entire system. No good.

CwET is the only game that I have problems with. System is an Athlon XP 1400+ with 512+ mb Nvidia GE4 with 128mb DDR and Windows XP Prof.

Any ideas?

i played with an open cabinet, worked for me

(Chrysis) #17

I’m gonna try that tonight… My mobo has no heating problems, but I have no sensors on the graphicboard so perhaps an open cabinet would do the trick… And if so, perhaps I need to get more fans. (Never really been a fan on fans though. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz )

I’ll get back after testing.

No… pb_system is a PunkBuster command and not an ET cvar, so you should not use the set command. The correct syntax is:

/pb_system 1

See the PunkBuster FAQ for details.

HTH.

Problem seems to be solved. I ran with open cabinet and had no freezes at anytime. Although my motherboard reports normal temperatur both for “system” and for CPU, it appears that CwET keeps the graphic board busy constantly causing it to overheat.

CwET is the only game I have this problem with so perhaps CwET is so much more GPU (?) consuming than other similar games (e.g Mohaa, UT2003, RtCW), so as to push my system “over the edge”…

im glad it worked out
