ET crashes my system

(scungili) #21

SYS:
PIII - 700
512MB RAM
GeForce 2 Pro

I have no problems on other shooters with graphics settings maxed.

Before I read these threads I too thought it was overheating, even though the CPU and GPU were only warm to the touch… so I removed the side panel and put a giant box fan next to it. Voila. it worked for almost an entire map… I was so happy… But sadly the problem kept happening… I set the graphics to 640/16bit/low/low/low and it still crashes after 2-15 minutes (with the box fan). This problem just started happening last week… I ran 1024/32bit/hi/hi/hi since june with not a single heat/crashing issue…

Im wondering if this crashing can be attibuted to some outside force? PB servers?

I ran PB web and got:
[08.28.2003 08:58:09] Game: et
[08.28.2003 08:58:09] Attempting to download pbsec.htm (please wait)
[08.28.2003 08:58:14] Received File pbsec.htm (1397 bytes)

[08.28.2003 08:58:14] dll\wc001040.dll copied to pbclnew.dll

Not sure if that means I was out of date or not… I will re-post if that helped.

For those that still think its overheating – would it be the CPU or GPU that needs more air? Mine are both lukewarm…

[Thanks SD for an awesome game.]

Hi all,

I have the same problem, random freezes on an 800 MHz Duron, via chipset mainboard, GeForce 2MX 32 Mo, 256 Mo, Win2k.

I’m not sure it’s an overheating problem (at least for me), ET worked fine until I reinstall Win2k, I also installed SP4 in the process, and also Norton AV 2003, so i wonder if one of these makes the trouble (whether SP4 or Norton).

I don’t think it’s Norton, since I deactivate it before launching the game. (As a side note, Norton prevented me from installing the game properly, until i deactivate it)

Or maybe it’s just an overheating problem.

Just an update on my freezing problem… The PB client updates I installed nor the /pb_system 1 change did anything to fix the problem. Still freezing hard… sometimes in the Server list.

Im noticing a lot of folks with GeForce 2’s that are having this issue… anyone with GF 4+?

Also… this problem may be related to win2k SP4 which I applied a few weeks ago… Looks like SuperIQMan had same issue.

thanks

Turns out it is a heat issue after all… As long as I set Color depth to 16 bit, and keep a big 18" fan pointed right at the GPU, I have no more crashing… 32bit color must put a ton of strain on the graphics card.

Thanks for listening

It turns out for me too that was a GPU overheating problem, the embiant temperature droped down recently and ET freezes no more. I don’t know why I thought it was not overheat, maybe my brain overheated too

It may cause problems with PB, see http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=faq-et.php (search for “norton”).

I have the same problem.
I have GeForce 4 with Athlon 1.4ghz.
Worked fine for like 2 weeks but started to do that again. with the loop sound just before it crash. Maybe overheating I will try with open panel.
But It’s weird that it only do that with Enemy Territory maybe some optimisation can be done or some code or bad… who know

(Pridebowl) #27

Maybe someone from Splash Damage can give us more info about this?

I really want to know more about this overheating problem with ET because it’s the only game where my GPU overheat and right now my panel is open and I have a big fan here and it work way better the game only crash once a while. Like I said in previous post maybe lack of optimisation or bad coding somewehre that cause that problem?

Same here… Heating problem, only ET, open cabinet… sigh Whats up with that?

No one still knows anything about this hanging-business?

Is CwET prone to overheating computers?

Anyone?

The sound loops because the sound card keeps playing whatever is in the buffer over and over again, because the game is no longer capable of shoving new data into that buffer.

ET is no more prone to overheating your CPU/GPU than any other CPU/GPU-intensive application is…

for everyone with “locks up with looping sound”-
I NEVER had this problem with Quake3 before the point relase that came with punk buster; did a search and found many people with the same problem. net or local game with pb: locked up with looping sound,
pb disbaled: no lock ups-
does anyone who has this problem NOT have pb enabled?
manually updating pb seems to help-
--------->make a backup of your pb folder first<--------------------
delete the Pbcl.db in your PB folder,
delete everything in you pb\htm and pb\dll folders,
then run pbweb.exe

check out the faq- there’s a section there on lock ups-

Ok, so…I find it soooo interesting reading all these posts on DA FREEEEEEZE and yeah it is a MF  .
I thought I had got rid of all this with the release ET as I had DA FREEZE/INFINATE SOUND LOOP when playing RTCW for 18 months.

I’d like to address a few issues but I am quite sure that everyone is different. It is very obvious to me that it is indeed PUNK BUSTER that is responsible and it seems to clash with your GFX Drivers for some reason.

I really dont think it has anything to do with removing sound cards from a pci slot or your firewall …or your virus program…or…your heating…or your xyz it is PB and Das ist Das Herr Hoffman simple and plain. The next move for me (personally) tonight, will be the good old /pb_sv_disable and see by disabling PB we shall see. Other than that my friend FCUK nose. So I will go and ask him and let you all know lol
