ET - a disaster.....

(adec) #41

LOL, just saw this thread “ET works for 99% of players but not for me, therefore ET is at fault!”. Nice logic.

Your statement is as dumb as they come. It’s obvious that ET creates problems for considerably more than 1% of the users, if you had bothered to read the whole thread. It is also obvious that the game has serious bugs, this is why I stated early on that I’d rather pay for a functioning product than get a flawed product for free.

(Kendle) #42

LOL, it’s not the slightest bit obvious to me. On what factual information do you base this “considerably greater than 1%” assertion?

You start a thread claiming that because a piece of software doesn’t work for you it must be buggy, and insult anyone who dares disagree. Way to go about enlisting help! A polite F-OFF should’ve been the limit to the responses to this thread, instead you’ve already received far more help than you deserve.

My god! The day has come that someone has taken over my attitude postition…

A funny thing I noticed is that alot of your crashes you say are with 3rd party maps… this has always been a problem i’ve noticed with any Q3 engine’d game. Whats the value of things like com_hunkmegs etc…? I remember when I had 128mb ram and playing Q3F I couldnt run any 3rd party maps unless I upped my com_hunkmegs value which just made me upgrade with another 256 instead…

Start with the simple things… instead of just upgrading your drivers to the latest expecting them to be top notch and high performance etc stability is the key more than anything. Revert and try 2 or 3 different driver versions and try all sorts of different combinations of drivers… just because its new doesnt mean it works.

(LOL - am I fed up with this ridiculous puerile acronym, try LOOOOOOL like some other stupid kids use - Laughing Out, Out, Out, Out Loud…I shake my head). The fact of the day is that ET is flawed software - period, and I have had to restart my computer often several times per day thanks to this flawed piece of software (yes, yes, I know I don’t HAVE to pleay ET, but that’s not the point is it). You just don’t get it do you… no other game, no other software is making my computer crash. The faulty piece of work is ET or rather how it interacts with my hardware. And yes I have now tried every test suggested. There are no indications of faulty hardware.

(adec) #45

Thanks for the tip. I have 1 gig of memory and did set com_hunkmegs to 256. I have unfortunately noticed that the game sometimes crashes the computer, even when playing the original maps.

You don’t need com_hunkmegs > 192 (ET won’t use anymore than that anyway), but the default 54 is often not enough for some customs, as pgh points out. And Adec, please point me to a piece of (free OR commercial) software that runs perfectly on every conceivable hardware configuration, especially a piece of software that works a PC as hard as a modern game does.

(eRRoLfLyNN) #48

Happens to me sometimes too - only occasionally - but my CPU is only 500mhz, so I’m surprised it works at all! I have always put it down to over-heating. Just for the record, far from being seriously flawed, I think ET is one of the sweetest pieces of free software I have ever seen. I still can’t believe it’s a freebie. And it works better than many games and other Apps that I paid a lot of money for, even on my shitty Acorn :stuck_out_tongue:

Kendle, what I’m saying is that the only software giving me problems on my particular configuration is ET (including games like RTCW, Max Payne 2, UT 2003 etc). I’ll set my com_hunkmegs back to 192. Is this the total amount of memory allocated to ET?

(Kendle) #50

No, there are 2 other settings, com_soundmegs, and com_zonemegs, but buggered if I know what they do. The point is all 3 added together is how much memory ET uses, but with 1Gb RAM you shouldn’t have any problems in that regard, and it’s hunkmegs that sometimes needs to be upped to play customs. That isn’t your problem by the looks of it.

Just to show that I’m not an unsympathic git, I had major problems with RTCW once upon a time. Everything else (well Half-Life based games) played fine, but RTCW kept crashing my PC. I tried different memory, different drivers, different sound card, no sound card, re-installtions, everything. Went back to bare bones hardware / OS, added each component and tested, and got no-where.

I then upgraded motherboard and processor and haven’t had a problem since. I’m convinced the original motherboard wasn’t supplying quite the right voltage to the Graphics card, based on extensive research at the time, but my old mobo didn’t provide any means of adjusting it.

Not that I wish you to give up hope, but there are just too many hardware configurations possible for anyone to guarantee their software will work without error on all of them. Maybe, in hindsight, something along the lines of “this is my problem, these are my specs, grateful for any assitance” might have been a more appropriate opening post?

(Kendle) #51

Domi, had to read your post a few times before I “got it”, brain starting to sieze up with age. And they say I’m cruel?

(Domipheus) #52

hehehehe, yeah, im feeling a tad wierd today - i blame that on the nastyness

(bubba g) #53

Kendle, Manic Miner always worked! (wonder how fast it would go on an XP3000?)

But you are correct, nearly every bit of commercial software is going to be buggy on certain hardware configs. But tbh, I have had more problems with ET than any other bit of software - to be expected really, as it is FREE and therefore lacking the support most major releases wil have (no dig at SD - I expect these guys would love to iron out any bugs if someone was willing to pay them for it!).

(adec) #54

…and as I said, I will gladly pay for working software rather than freeware with no support.

(Kendle) #55

I’ve been a regular on the UK RTCW forum since April '02, and on this one since ET came out, and I’m not noticing any greater degree of technical problems with ET than there were with RTCW. Indeed, the RTCW tech forum used to be a hive of activity, with the sound-loop problem being the real biggy (mainly cos it was so damn hard to track down what was causing it).

I’m not defending SD per se, or saying that cos it’s free you should have to live with these things, I’m just saying I honestly don’t think ET is any more buggy than any other game you could mention, free or otherwise. It just seems that way to those that have problems with ET and not anything else.

(chr0nicles) #56

ETpro fixes all known bugs, everybody should start et with +set fs_game etpro.

Adec: Since the following list

Clean install of ET (Which means DONT SAVE pk3/cfgs from maps/mods and the like)
Checking your PSU (Does it give enough power400WATT is a must nowadays)
Checking your Drivers
Updating your BIOS
Stress Testing your System
Checking Temperature of your system
Checking your memory
Bitching (Just bitch and whine to see if it helps)

All failed to get ET to work without crashing.

I suggest you UNINSTALL ET, have fun with UT2003

(adec) #57

Very good suggestion. Any other good suggestions out there (you see I like the intelligent nature of ET, teamwork and communication - not that more than 1% of all players knows this of course)?

(pgh) #58

Its quite blatantly YOUR setup thats flawed. One major thing your missing is if you do feel this strongly about the game then dont bloody play it or at least attempt too. Tbh, the users on this forum, or 90% have sat down and wasted at least 5 minutes of there time to try and help you and your being a cunt about it. This forum being here alone is enough to say that the dev’s are attempting to help even though its none of there buisiness it would be the people THEY work for… eg, if someone had a problem with something I did in my work eg being on this forum atm then it’d be elsewhere they would complain.

Then go buy a game and go elsewhere - its just gonna mean we dont need to waste any more minutes…

… and its ironic… you didnt even need to pay for the game and your whining about no support… even tho they do, why would someone support something if there not making a living of it? As said elsewhere, these developers have real lifes and need food on there tables - and im sure this all comes before one out of a good thousand’s people who cant work there game.

Just shut the fuck up you ignorant ape…
