ET - a disaster.....

(adec) #1

I have never experienced a game that crashes my computer more than Enemy Territory. I don’t care if it’s free. I’d rather pay for a stable game than having to restart my computer almost every f***ng time I play.

(Salteh) #2

ET doesn’t crash me. I love it being free. I’d rather play a great free online game than paying something silly like a new FIFA every 6 months.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #3

adec, then dont play on the old shitty acorn

(adec) #4

“adec, then dont play on the old shitty acorn”

Great solution! Why don’t you stcik your head in the sand like an ostrich while your at it…

(nUllSkillZ) #5

Ihaven’t got problems.
May be you can post your specs, OS …
And may be there’s someone who can help you.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #6

HELP HIM, LOL

when he abusing like 4 no reason at all then its a surprise he is even here, lets kill him

(adec) #7

“adec, then dont play on the old shitty acorn”

Great solution! Why don’t you stcik your head in the sand like an ostrich while your at it… You see, what I want is to get anyone responsible for this piece of work to take their job seriously and start asking questions to find a solution to my problems. I would think a serious software company would be interested in finding out why their software doesn’t work properly on a certain configuration. I’m sure I’m not the only one having this problem, and I’ve tried to get some answers in the past, but always found silence, or stupid answers from dimwits stating “I don’t have this problem”.

Specs:

Windows XP Pro SP 1
Intel Pentium 4, 2.6 ghz
Asus V9560/TD/P/256M Graphics Card
Asus P4S800 Mother board
1 gb RAM
Soundblaster Live 5.1 Sound card

Symtoms:

Screen goes black, buzzing sound from speaker system
Non responsive to ctrl+alt+del, hot boot needed
Sometimes I get 4 beeps on restart indicating memory failure, a cold boot is then necessary

not to mention that the game crashes almost every time even a minor download has occured when playing on line (no reboot necessary then, but colours gets all washed out)

(adec) #8

And =DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR (what a lame nick), tender something useful or keep quite

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #9

they do take there job seriosly, BTW its alot better than adec, i mean ffs i would not dare, wots adec mean “A Dipstick eater C***”?

try updating all your drivers, have you patched up ET to version 1.02?

if it dosnt respond to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and id say it was a problem with your computer, you have DX9?

try RTCW and other games and what performance do u get?

try /cg_drawfps and what FPS do you get?

try not flamming others for no reason, you might get helped

do u have a FAT formatted hard drive?

(Sauron|EFG) #10

I don’t have this problem.

I’m sure SD would look into every single problem if only someone payed them to do it - even game developers needs food on the table. You’re stuck with what help the ostrich community can offer, so you may want to hold back your bashing…

It doesn’t sound like a SW problem to me.

The obvious thing to do is to run memtest86 since you do get a memory failure indication.
How often does it happen? Every time you play? How long can you play before it happens?
What have you done to rule out overheating?

(nUllSkillZ) #11

What graphic card drivers do you have?
(By the way has the graphic card a nVidia or ATI chip?)
I’ve heard that there has been some problems with certain driver versions.

(adec) #12

Asus V9560/TD/P/256MB Graphics Card (NVIDIA Geforce FX5600) All the latest drivers.

(adec) #13

try updating all your drivers, have you patched up ET to version 1.02?
Yes, I have the latest NVIDIA and Soundblaster Drivers.
Yes, I have patched up the game (been playing ET since Fuel Dump)

if it dosnt respond to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and id say it was a problem with your computer
There may be a problem with compatibility between hardware and ET. As a matter of fact I believe this is the problem, because the only game (or software) causing these problems is ET.

Do you have DX9?
I have DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)

try RTCW and other games and what performance do u get?
ET is the only game causing problems

do u have a FAT formatted hard drive?
I have NTFS

Sauron:
“It doesn’t sound like a SW problem to me.”
I believe it may be a software hardware compatibility problem. No other games nor SW reproduce this problem/behaviour

The obvious thing to do is to run memtest86 since you do get a memory failure indication.
I’ve thought about memory problems, and will try the memtest, thanks.

How often does it happen? Every time you play?
It happens frequently. And more often in certain maps than others.

How long can you play before it happens?
Sometimes it doesn’t happen at all, sometimes almost instantly and sometimes well into the game. I have tried to find a common denominator as to why it happens but to no avail so far.

What have you done to rule out overheating
Nothing really, how can I?

As you understand, this is very frustrating, and I have tried to find solutions and suggestions to this problem in this forum several times in the past. I love the game, and like I said, I’d rather pay for a game without problems than having to live with this.

Well if you asked your questions like a total dimwit stating “I’m having problems, i’m too lazy and stupid to describe my problems more correctly so you all just have to guess what my systems specs are and what symptoms i’m getting” <-- Then i don’t blame them.

As already proven in this thread, you would have got more proper feedback, if you posted your problems correctly in the first place.

Some good tips:

#1 Indeed RUN memtest.
#2 Upgrade your BIOS to the latest version (1007)
#3 Open your CASE (to dispatch some heat)
after your system crashes, take a look at the system/cpu temperatures to check if they are
not too high.
#4 Read the 101 on how to post questions on public forums.

(evilsock) #16

Um, have you overclocked you machine in any way? FSB overclocking can cause random memory failures

Also, dead obvious, have you re-installed after completely removing ET?

The other thing to consider it overheating - I have vcool installed for my machine and whilst the pc generally runs at around 33C for normal operation, when I play ET things heat up dramatically - it’s not uncommon for my CPU to be running at 47 or 48C - it’s worth checking out because as I found out, you may actually be slowly cooking your machine.

btw - if you expect ppl to drop everything and come running to help you - be fucking polite about it dipshit

*edit: chr0nicles, you must have been posting at the same time as me  - oops.

Here’s my canned hardware stress testing post:

The first thing you must do is to verify your system stability. Make sure all your BIOS settings are set to their “Optimal” defaults by choosing that option in the main BIOS screen. Then select the correct FSB frequency for the CPU in the “Advanced Chipset Features” screen. Save the changes.

Begin by checking your memory with [L=Memtest86+]http://www.memtest.org/[/L]. Let it run overnight. No errors may be detected during that time.

After that, use the “blend” torture test of [L=Prime95]http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm][/L]. Your system should be able to run the TT for at least 12 hours straight without reporting a single error (just let it run overnight as well).

Finally, to check your video system, run 3DMark2001 together with Prime95 for another 8 hours. There should be no crashes and no Prime95 errors.

If your system survives all that, you can take the next step and start investigating the OS, drivers, etc. But first run the stress tests and report back your results.

HTH.

(adec) #18

Thanks for the tips. I’ll go ahead with this and check my system thoroughly… How long does it take to run the memorytest, and should I run it with ECC on?

(DG) #19

being abuse isnt the best way to go about getting people to help you, it’s their time for your benefit.

SD isnt actually responsible for technical support, that would be Activision, though SD have been unusually good at reading here and reading in IRC (esp. at first).

Other things worth trying, roughly in order for quick & easy first:

  • does it happen when you play offline?
  • try playing in a server without Punkbuster (PB)
  • reinstall ET: uninstall via add/remove programs and then also delete the ET folder which may well remain because of other files.
  • disable everything running in the background, including virus scanner; check for viruses/spyware while you’re at it.
  • try playing ET with the case door/side off (cooling)
  • run prime95 torture/stess test & memtest86 (respecitvely cpu, ram)
  • try unplugging unnecessary hardware, e.g. CD drives (power supply)

I have a similar problem to you (except my system simply hangs, no black screen) and the only hardware we have in common is the SB Live. I’ve been meaning to trash the bloody thing for a while now, but not been able to afford to.
