After searching the forums for a solution or workaround to the above problem, I found nothing, much to my surprise. I recently made a clean install on my Intel dual core 2.8 Mhz, 1 gb ram, Geforce 7800 GT (512mb). Most of my applications work flawlessly, but no matter how I try, ET will crash. I have been able to get it to run once after installing and upgrading to 2.6, but after closing the app and restarting, it hangs already when the intro film sequence starts. I’m using the latest beta Vista drivers from Nvidia (ver. 96.33), released for RC1. Is there anybody out there who can guide me to a viable solution/workaround to this?
Enemy Territory will always crash on Windows Vista RC1 x86
Try to use Linux.

Welcome to the forums.
Unfortunately I can’t help you with the problem, sorry.
Yeah welcome fellow W:ET fan
Much to my suprise its much suprise to you. I dont think that many people are running that pile of bloat yet.
…I feel bad now, ok? ;/
2 brilliant replies. Hopefully, these Forums are monitored by people who are able to provide me with slightly more constructive feedback.
<mr elephant man> hello, welcome to the forums!
<visitor> hi why does my beta tapir crash?
<mr elephant man> welcome, sorry can’t help - I don’t think many people use that uber new ultra tapir yet.
<visitor> omg wtf brilliant !
You got two decent replies, but they couldn’t help you. Be polite
I assume the computer you’re using to play ET with is connected to the internet?
Unfortunatly not many people are using vista + ET atm it seems! Someone must’ve tried though… only time… will tell!
:tapir:
Well, the fact is that Vista isn’t officially released yet, so you shouldn’t be surprised if you have problems with any number of applications.
It’s possible that at some point W:ET will be considered obsolete and no longer conveniently playable on current operating systems. Try installing the original Doom; it’s quite unpleasant on XP unless you use some modern port like zDaemon. Granted, Vista isn’t as far from XP as XP is from DOS, but you get the point.
If you use a beta OS you get what’s coming to you. Vista should be on a separate partition and used only for testing at this point. Splash Damage shouldn’t be expected to provide support for an older game on an unreleased OS.
W:ET runs like a dream on XP, BTW.
True, but as we are getting closer to the RTM, this number is steadily decreasing.
I seriously doubt this. I believe this to be a video driver issue. Could be OpenGL compatibilty. This is why I hoped to get some technical advice from Splash Damage.
It’s out of Beta, this is Release Candidate 1.
Based on the fact that W:ET ended up to become a free product, I can partly agree with you. However, I’m sure that it is in Splash Damage’s best interest to ensure that all products they’re involved with, new and older, will work without problems on the new Windows OS.
Yes, I know. But after having installed and used Windows Vista RC1 Ultimate Edition since Sept. 1st, I’m not going back to XP Pro.
Just a personal feeling here, but I agree with Adec1 (kinda). 2 of the most useless replies you can get to any technical problem is “use random alternate application” or “i dont know”… both utterly pointless. He/she maybe could have handled it slightly better, but i understand his/her frustration.
back on topic… i don’t know, use windows xp.
holy sarcasm batman!
Well if it hangs, did you happen to check the system logs to see if any entries are made when this happens? 99% of the time the logs will give you more information than a forum, and possibly give you an error to reference for help.
Does Vista have any compatibility settings like running an old game in XP under the games shortcut? Did you try this?
If the person is asking why a program doesn’t work on an unreleased OS, it’s the only reasonable reply: use a released, and therefore stable and supported OS.
For all intents and purposes, Vista does not yet exist; XP does. That’s what “I know,” so that’s what I suggested.
Did you miss the part where he said it was out of beta? And no, it doesn’t help the problem what so ever… it’s a bit plainly totally completely and absolutely obvious he wants it working on Vista… how will suggesting installing XP help it work on vista? And why are nvidia releasing drivers for an OS that doesnt exist?

There’s another quite obvious option, do not reply at all if you have nothing to contribute with.
Did you miss the part where I said it’s unreleased? Stop splitting hairs over “beta” and “release candidate.” The point is that Vista is not on the shelves yet.
I know what he wants. I’m suggesting that perhaps he shouldn’t be entirely surprised if he can’t have what he wants just yet, under the circumstances.
“Doesn’t exist” was me being rediculously facetious in order to drive the point home.
I “contributed” the only logical option he has.
There are extensive possibilities to set different compatibilty modes to emulate previous versions of Win OSs. I have tried this, but so far without success. Unfortunately, the event logs don’t tender enough interpretable info.
Now that’s interesting! Are you using the Nvidia chipset? If so, are you using the included and digitally signed Nvidia drivers, or the latest beta release for RC1 (ver. 93.66, dated Sept. 1st)?
I am pretty sure this is a driver issue. I have tried finding useful info in the MS Beta usergroups, but so far I have found nothing really helpful, which is why I took my business here. One post claimed that Nvidia had workarounds for similar problems in the release notes for the latest drivers, but I have found nothing of the sort.
Obviously not since the guy above has it working on Vista, everyone knows Vista isn’t out yet but that’s not a reason to not try and get ET to work on it.
Again, that provides no help what so ever… is this confusing you? His only “logical” option is to completely uninstall the current OS he has (an OS that is available to anyone, and chances are there’s atleast someone on this forum running it and ET, and that’s whome he requested help from… or someone in the know about Vista… which you arent apparently), and do something which he said isn’t an option? I’m sorry m8 you’re completely losing sight of how to provide technical support… we call your “logical” option a “last resort”.
This is funny. Everyone is so freely hostile online. Do you act like this in real life?
Go back and read my original reply and show me where I did anything but kindly suggest that perhaps Vista isn’t the best option just yet, and gave an example from the past of why this may be the case.
Bunch of pedantic internet attack dogs.
