Enemy Territory QuakeWars: New team based pro game?

(Apocalyps) #1

I have been thinking that maybe ET: QW could replace CS 1.6 as The team based game. It would be really nice to see some changes in there. CS 1.6 has been around for ages (because there hasn’t been any potential team based games to replace 1.6?) and I think now is a great time to move on.

What really got me enthusiast about this was when Paul Wedgwood stated that they are not going to make ET:QW newbie friendly game and that there would be a lot depth in game to keep gamers playing it more than a just a few weeks.

In my opinion Quakewars has a tons of potential:1) Gameplay looks very promising 2) Splash Damage (they know how to make team based multiplayer games)
3) The game should attract Battlefield, CS 1.6 / Source, Enemy Territory, and maybe even Quake players. Now that’s a HUGE player base!

However there are a few things that I’m concerned about:

The maps are designed for 24 player games (12 vs. 12) - I think that’s way too much and sponsor are not going to pay so many flights, hotels. Etc for 12 people

The problem: Do the maps fit for 5 vs. 5 matches?

QWTV: Is there been any plans to release some sort of Quakewars TV: This is very important to attract more mainstream players and to keep esports scene live and kicking.

What do you think guys? Is there any change that we could see ET:QW in CPL, ESWC etc?

I think that takes time but I know that is certainly possible if the game is popular enough and has enough potential.
I know there are few spelling errors here and there apologies for that

I think they’re doing necessary for a fun game and I applaud them for that . I think they have a very clear design in mind and I hope they do follow it instead of trying to make the game turn into something else just because.

With that said, I think it’s pretty hard for a game like ETQW to be adopted like that. Think about it: sure, maybe 5v5 is possible and maps scale well, but gameplay will necessarily be too different from a 12v12-16v16 matches (as designed) simply because you’ll have some severe class restriction.

And even so, it’s not the better game that makes it to a ‘competitive’ spot like CS has made: it’s just the overall most played game, and one that’s easier to scale. Will ETQW be that game? I don’t know, I’m just another clueless player… but I doubt, and that’s why I hope SD won’t try to design the game for that. Competitive features yes. CS replacement, no way.

I think the status of CS (and CS:S) has as much to do with unique historical circumstances as the games themselves. It would be very surprising if a new game supplanted them any time soon.

(Loffy) #4

Agree with previous speaker, i.e. It is not only a matter of, for example, “will the maps fit for X vs X”, but rather historical circumstances (people follow the norm).
That said, and I am sure we all agree on that ETQW will be the best game ever and it should replace that other (boring) game in the number 1 spot on lists of popular multiplayer online games.
You can blow up tires. Need I saw more?

ET-TV would be neat for clan style gaming but not essential. Id rather the time went into the polishing, which is excatly what they are doing!

(RosOne) #6

No one asked, so I will: Why Counter Strike? People enjoying CS prefer a different gamestyle.

(Apocalyps) #7

What you mean by “people enjoying cs prefer a different gamestyle” ?

I don’t have anything against cs - in fact I think it’s a great game. I am a cs player. I play cs source in Eurocup, Nationscup etc… However i think that cs 1.6 should "stand aside
(i don’t know better word) for new games. Don’t get me wrong… my first post idea was not to start “CS 1.6 vs ET:QW” flame war. I just want to disguss about chance and potential of ETQW in competive gaming…

I don’t want that 1.6 dissapears completely I just want that 1.6 should have a potential teambased option and I hope that is going to be ET:QW

Developers if you hear me: Please consider option to adjust maps for optional 5vs5 gaming

(madness) #8

ET is very different from CS…
And I think devs said that they have played it in 5vs5 or 6vs6 and it works out nicely.

(RosOne) #9

Apocalyps, it’s not about some kind of CS vs ET:QW flame war.

As madness said: You can’t really compare those two games. They are very different indeed. CS is a TDM game, it has much more realistic gameplay than ET will ever have. W:ET and ET:QW are arcade’ish afterall (which is awesome).

CS is like… “There he comes… there he comes… there he comes… BANG… DEAD… The end”… ET is more like “Spawn… shoot… die… spawn… shoot… kill… teamkill… die… spawn… build… shoot…die…spawn…”

You know what I mean… hehe… what a post :blah:

Anyway… In my own opinion they are completely different games.

(kamikazee) #10

The interviews say that the game creates frontlines even more than W:ET does. That would mean the game is constantly focused unless players of your team do not play for objectives at all.

(jah) #11

CS gameplay is really different from most other teamplay based game. in CS you play for round points. in rtcw/w:et/et:qw you play for objectives. that’s a huge difference in gameplay/teamplay. and i can go on: et:qw has classes, CS has… nothing compared to thtat. in CS you can’t straffe/sprint/move properly (har!), ET:qw is a fast moving world

Paul from SD said in an E3 interview that they have tested ET:QW with competitive gameplay settings (aka the 6vs6 style gameplay from it’s “not so distant” relatives like rtcw and w:et) and that it worked fine. there’s even a server side cvar that simply disallows the spawning of vehicles.

If you want to play ET:QW in a CS-like-fashion-gameplay, than you’ll prolly have to wait untill some mod team creates a “Camping Strike bring-yer-tents uber-mod for ET:QW” mod. I hope it won’t happen tho, because even tho i play CS, i really dislike the whole competitive gameplay mode CS have. play cod or dod:cs, they’re about the same (round based).

what i would want tho, would be to have most of ETPro’s features already enabled on ET:QW just like W:ET had OSP integrated  and if et:qw competitive scene turns out to be something “a la battlefield”, with 8vs8/12vs12 clanwars (it’s the community who’ll decide), i’ll stick with w:et for competitive playing, and play et:qw just for fun.

CS 1.6 is mostly played because it’s cheap, it’s noob friendly and very easy to start fragging (very little effort to grasp the game basics). besides all the historic facts ofc.

imo.

I didn’t liked cs, and neither did battlefield hold my attention very long. I pretty much enjoyed good ol’ UT1, w:et, q3 for years and a few rounds of f.e.a.r just for the dm and splatter.
Can’t see much reference to the CS campplay here too. For me ET is more of a hybrid of UT-Assault mode and q3/et-fortress.
I just hope:

  • you have a decent running speed (confimed by vids Yay)
  • weapons dont spray like a piss-poor softair toy replica.
  • you can actually fight on your feet and are not only on your feet, to run for a vehicle.

Im still scared about the vehicle balance, they destroyed all the fun in bf2 for me… so seeing those hovering aircrafts in QW doesn’t really turn me on. /kick vehiclenaps
May SD teach me wrong! - And when they do, it actually gets a pretty good chance to be called eSport, even without qwtv directly out of the box.
Rather polish.

Third at CSports, fourth at Gamespy, I’d say there already is a good team based shooter to replace C-SS, no need to wait for Quake Wars. That way SD can keep making another great game for non clan players like me, instead of a stripped down, tiny map, class restricted 6V6 game that seems to be demanded by clannies that think game popularity begins and with them.

/end mini-rant

(SCDS_reyalP) #14

It also has such a huge player base, that there is always a large choice of games, anywhere there is internet.

(jjpron) #15

For 5 on 5 you really need each player to be excellent. For perpetual noobs such as myself who play ET just for fun, and not competition a 12 -14 ppl sized teams are perfect. Enough cannon fodder to take advantage of, and enough manpower to reach the objectives through teamplay.

(kamikazee) #16

I doubt they wouldn’t balance those vehicles - and if it wouldn’t be optimal for tourneys, just do /seta g_vehicle_timer 0. (Note I just made the name up, but a CVar to do that is said to exist)

(makron) #17

SD has stated a number of times that the game works fine in 6v6 cuz of the focused frontline so I don’t think we’ll have to worry. And about the CS community, that won’t change in several years - I don’t think ET:QW will be as newbiefriendly.

Another question though. Do we really want CS players in the ET:QW community seeing as how immature the scene is?. No we don’t, Quality over quantity.

(HellToupee) #18

no game not for a very long time is going to replace cs, cs source has trouble replacing cs 1.6, dosnt matter how good a game is they wouldnt want change.

(Isabel Lucas) #19

You’re worrying too much about map size.

Being objective based eveyone is concentrated on 1 point so 2 or 32 players is irrelvant as the action will always be around the objective. This makes the game potentially great for clan play as 5 vs 5, 8 vs 8 and 12 vs 12 can all be accomodated without any problem in fact apart from the fact there are fewer bodies on the map, I doubt you’ll notice much difference between the intensity of play given this. Just think of the objectives effectively as choke points.

As for it replacing CS, I guess its a wait and see on that. I have no doubt CS will be toppled as the FPS king at some point, but whether ETQW is the game that does it is something that will be decided in the future.

I would Like to see the game hold 32 vs 32 but if it does not why have a huge player base.that holds 5 vs 5 that would be very stupid , I am a server owner I would not want to pay for a server to hold 5 vs 5 , I would like to see more base playing maybe 32 vs 32 or what ever the base map can hold I would like to see 44 player server pluse if thay do that it would sell more of this game , and a CTF map play would be cool like taking there flag and what not it would be cool. :drink: :rocker2: :poke:
