IMO…this is “id’s” pet project for this engine…I could be wrong.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Previews and Interviews
i bought it for the preview, it’s the front page feature.
inside it’s an 8 page feature, little in the way of new info though, bar a quickie breakdown on the vehicles. most of it is new imagery, I suspect largely posed shots.
PCZone seem very excited, though most of the gaming mags seem to be well into Battlefield so maybe the writer figures it to be a worthy competitor to that (their only “downside” is “maps are being designed with only 24-32 players in mind” (my emphasis).
imho a key interest for id with ET:QW is adding outdoor environments and large scale play to the engine, and proving it’s capable.
I’m probably biased though in that I’ve thought for a long time now that with the DOOM3 engine id would essentially be developing it into a general-FPS purpose engine over a number of games. Obviously I’m just guessing since I’ve no idea on the way (or rather, if) the tech flows back and forth between id and the games they “executive produce”.
ComputerGamingWorld Jan2006 has a cover story on QuakeWars:ET
Several pages of new screenshots and info. Drool worthy.
Keep up the good work SplashDamage crew.
I’d say the new Wolfenstein game will be that seeing as that is actually an id project.

Btw, quiet unusual question but could someone from SD reply and say if the information in those previews is accurate? The TeleFragged one in particular :lookaround:
I didn’t see anything we didn’t already know on that preview. What did sound odd to you?

“And speaking of shadows: not only do the players and vehicles cast shadows on the ground, but they cast shadows on themselves and each other as well.”
So there is self-shadowing after all? Or did they only get that impression that there is self-shadowing? Or was it only shown for hype but will be disabled in the retail version?
Why I ask, often editors got something wrong, misunderstand something or just forget details.
“(…)the Vampire Air-Strike Bomber, and Magog Sky-Crane(…)”
Those names are new, haven’t seen them anywhere. The fact that light will diffuse indoor rooms wasn’t mentioned before either. Also, Area of Relevance wasn’t mentioned previously.
“(…)to battle the Earth Defense Force(…)”
A third team? yay An older IGN article says EDF too… maybe SD is changing the name?
You’re right, I missed the other pages of the Telefragged preview. Duh! Yep, there’s plenty of new mini-information on that preview… nothing odd, though, IMO, from both previews you mention.

This is one of the things we will probably never know for sure at least until the game is released. Since screenshots do show self-shadowing, I think it’s a given that the game is using it right now, and that they’re using it on preview demos.

Yes, these names (from totalvideogames.com’s preview, not telefragged) are new, at least to me.
Also, Area of Relevance wasn’t mentioned previously.
Sure it hasn’t been mentioned, but I didn’t see anything worth a news item about it either. It’s kind of a given when you’re working with network code - you don’t send what isn’t needed, period. It’s cool to see it mentioned (on totalvideogames.com’s preview btw), but personally I was expecting it to be like that the whole time.

Some preview websites are using the name EDF instead of GDF. From what I’ve seen/remember, they were called the EDF before, but were later changed to GDF - maybe because EDF is already the name of the marine corp on DN3D/DNF? Who knows.
Anychance of a translation? My german is somewhat non exsistant.
From the post above refering to the Vampire bomber and sky crane It makes the most sense to assume the skycrane is the thing that drops a vehicle and the bomber is maybe what the field ops guy calls in.
It also seems that the name is going to be GDF. After that ^^ (thanks Joe) Im a bit excited need to calm down
PlanetQuake just added a preview, including an overview of the classes & vehicles and an FAQ that contains some info I haven’t seen before (e.g. about the net code):
