Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Previews and Interviews

(Locki) #1

Hi all,

I just got back from QuakeCon 2005 in Dallas, Texas, where Kevin Cloud (from id Software) and I took part in a number of Enemy Territory: QUAKE Warsâ„¢ interviews. Since then there have been a number of previews posted and there should be quite a lot of new information. Here are the ones I’m aware of so far:[ul]http://www.shacknews.com/extras/2005/081505_quakewars_1.x

Most of you will no doubt of seen them, but there were also two new screenshots released for QuakeCon (to add to the existing three):

you have just brightened up my day

* Every map has a mission objective for the human and Strogg sides, as they fight for certain zones in the map. There’s no flag capturing here, but building or destroying structures, that sort of thing.

* storyline for each level, creating a fuller sense of purpose

* An example scenario we were given was the earth forces trying to establish a new base across a map. The earth forces would need to escort the huge mobile base convoy and clear the path to a destination. Smaller objectives along the way would be things like building a bridge or destroying particular defense structures.

* It’s important to the designers that you can have fun on foot as well, and they are ensuring that sometimes it’s easier to get to an objective by foot than using a vehicle.

this will become so much better than any BF game

and this sounds like fun:

* A new physics system in place as well. Let’s just say you expect to see a lot of Quake Wars stunt videos. Individual wheels can come off, you can rig a vehicle with explosives, you can do donuts, drive a car on its side with two wheels, do barrel rolls in airplanes, etc, etc.

not needed at first imo, but it’s definitely for long-term fun. lol, even though i play ET from the first day on, i still get my fun like this week when arty hit me and i was shot like a long-dart into a house, stuck with my head in the wall and the rest of the body straight outside

and the following looks like every campaign will be different, awesome idea to go away from static campaigns and move on to dynamic ones:

* These maps will be divided into territories, and you’ll have specific objectives to be accomplished in each one. The flow of battle will always lead through these so you’ll know exactly where the combat will be. The progression through these areas will depend on who wins each match. If the Strogg win, your next match will be different than if the Marines do.

centralized combat, so that all meet there where the fun is, just like in ET

i bet ET:QW will be the most anticipated MP game in 2006, so you guys have a tough job to do, i’m sure you’ll do it well

I pity the folks who lived in the past century having no chance to enjoy the upcoming ETQW.
I read all articles above and the game design seems to be perfect!
Let me know if you need a middle-aged absent-minded beta-tester.

here’s another preview:

http://gamesdomain.yahoo.com/pc/enemy_territory_quake_wars/preview/1122384

compared to the others it gives more details on different vehicles.

just read the following again, and my day is still brightened

The maps are based on various locations on Earth, but Wedgwood said they want to discourage players running off in various directions to pursue their own agendas. Instead, each map will have a single front line that progresses linearly rather than washing back-and-forth in a tug-of-war over the same locations.

ps: lol, i love the release date which they put on the page: 01/01/2006. if only it were true

Jetlag - yes it’s strange… I’ve been flying out to id Software for a few years now (this was my sixth QuakeCon!), but for some reason I suffer much more from jet lag than I used to.

That said, I’ve flown out to the States around 13 times since the last QuakeCon (mostly LA and Dallas), so that might have something to do with it! ET2 certainly keeps me busy

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
DEV: Splash Damage
PUB: Activision
ETA: 2006
WEB: www.splashdamage.com

A pleasurable activity that’s free, includes the handling of a sizeable weapon and involves Splash Damage. That’s right - PC gamers everywhere have been secreted away in their bedrooms playing the superb multiplayer-only Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory pack for the last few years, but now it’s time for something new.

Instead of just a straight sequel, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has ditched the RTCW universe in favour of that old faithful, Quake. If you’re familiar with what passes for the Quake story, you’ll be mildly interested to know that ET:QW is set prior to Quake II when the Earth Defence Force’s efforts against the evil Strogg invasion army was in full swing.

While the familiar class-based teamplay is still at the game’s heart, it’ll be based around a version of the Doom 3 engine that’s been modified to cater for vast outdoor levels. Instead of creeping around looking for the Hun, you’ll now find yourself cruising desolate planes in an impressive selection of beefy vehicles - with full voice comms for maximum teamwork.

A far more noticeable distinction is promised between the two factions, with the Stroggs offering alien weaponry and technology as well as more varied classes and mission objectives. The only downside is that ET:QW isn’t going to be free like its predecessor, but we doubt that’ll prevent it from being a serious competitor to current multiplayer daddy Battlefield 2.

that and a screenie we’ve already seen is all I could find in their online version
