Does Phantom make the game more fun?

(Bowmayne) #41

it shouldn’t take an entire coordinated team to combat ONE person on the other team, and currently he’s just promoting camping. Whenever he makes an appearance in game, everybody hides or stays back in spawn so they don’t get killed by him, or they spend the whole game just trying to kill him out of spite.

The game is less fun for me now.

(Yak) #42

No, As he is right now he’s the ONLY merc that can flank. I used to be able to as pretty much any merc and cause havoc, now whenever I try I get 7 katanas through my chest, despite noticing the phantoms and shooting them.

(ayybailey) #43

I like Phantom. I like his character a lot and I do think there’s a place for a stealthy [and charismatic] melee merc in post apocalyptic London. And being BETA and all, there isn’t a better time than now to implement a merc like that.

However, in the state that he is in, he is very frustrating to play against. I’ve gladly [and stupidly] wasted maybe 20 minutes worth of my 6H Credit Booster to leave games mid-way through just so I won’t have to put up with Phantom for 5-10 more minutes.

(FunkyMonkey) #44

For the most part, the game just got a little less fun with Phantom. When they say “remember to play dirty” I guess they really meant it with the Phantom update w/o RedEye or something. The game just got a bit more difficult especially frustrating. I guess I wont be playing Aura as much anymore. Gotta need to save credit so I can get Phantom soon. But the way things are going in game, I might as well just stop playing for awhile until they make this game fun to play again. Doubtful.

(proficientNavy) #45

Yeah, the hell with the enthusiast gamers with jobs who make up 95% of the market for actually paying money for games.

This game should be exclusively for unemployed 20 year olds who have time to play 8+ hours a day, 7 days a week.

(avidCow) #46

The cloak emits an audible hum, like I showed in my video, you can easily hear it and look around for him. And his cloak is not completely invisible.

It’s bugged and doesn’t always hum. The other comments boil down to “shoot him while walking backwards”. Seriously, you turned your back on him and he didn’t even long jump or shoot you or capitalise in any way; probably because that guy sucks. You got lucky.

(deerMirror) #47

Phantom breeds a little bit of frustration but generally I don’t have problems with him or his play style. I just think Phantom is a bit… lackluster for a merc all about killing people. Sure he can stab someone who’s off doing their thing alone but I can just nade the whole team.

(watsyurdeal) #48

@avidCow

I work 40 hours a week, and have gotten 250+ hours since February…so yeeeeeeeeeea

And I wouldn’t call it luck, luck implies that you can’t do it again…yet people clearly can.

(avidCow) #49

@Watsyurdeal

It’s not what you did, it’s what others don’t do.

(blamelessZuchinni) #50
How doesn’t he belong but Vasilli or Rhino do? Or hell even Aura and her ability for that matter.
Wow. You even have the Phantom avatar and everything.

(Aazhyd) #51

I suggest 2 nerfs:

 • Add a few seconds to cooldown, because now he is almost always invisible.
 • Lower his base health to 100. Gives a better chance at fighting him.

I got in a situation several times where I spotted him, fired at him and still got stabbed with him at 6% life (or similar).

(irishrOy) #52

More fun…?

Originally the game’s goal was to complete objectives by doing teamwork.
Now it’s playing “hide and seek and-find-the-Phantom-otherwise-he-kills-you-and-he-could-be-everywhere-and-don’t-be-killed-by-him-ohgod-ohgod”?

(Nervous) #53

Have to say, it does not suit the game at all, it really detracts from the gameplay and flow.

(Mortimoose) #54

Another attempt at a session in DB and Phantom spam has gotten me to exit after a few matches.

There is nothing fun about an invisible, katana toting tank running freely around every map, meleeing people. Every god damn game.
How doesn’t he belong but Vasilli or Rhino do? Or hell even Aura and her ability for that matter.

A Rhino’s job is to be the vanguard on a push, and the toughest line of defense when holding a chokepoint. He deals out tremendous damage, but attracts even more. However, he needs a team to help him achieve these things - medics to heal him after he soaks up damage, engineers to manage the objectives he’s defending/attacking, fire support to cripple the teams he keeps at bay. Most importantly, he needs a supporting presence to give him room to move and recover, without which he’ll quickly melt under sustained headshots. He’s a wonderful asset to any team, but he only achieves the best of what he can be if the team he’s on is at least somewhat coordinated. In other words, he encourages and rewards teamplay.

Vasilli, does not reward team play, but rather facilitates it. His heartbeat sensor is an incredibly useful tool, giving his team the exact information they need to precisely place defenses or figure out flanking positions. While one could argue that he could function fine as a lone wolf, using his hearbeat sensor to alert him of incoming enemies, the fact is that most Vasillis will die if a half-decent player manages to get within easy shooting distance of them. As such, Vasilli reaches his full potential when he uses his heartbeat sensors to support the front line, taking out targets of opportunity or importance while providing his team with the intel they need to keep both themselves and the sniper safe.

Phantom does not need a team to be good at his job. Oh, sure, a Phantom alone won’t guarantee victory for a team, but it’s not like his job is particularly hindered if his team is doing well or not. He can invis past an even slightly distracted defensive line, kill stragglers, etc., etc. without any real feedback to or from his team. Sure, one could argue that he has the potential to provide intelligence on enemy positions and such, but there are problems with that - Vasilli does the job way better, and Phantom’s design provides far more opportunity to simply kill targets he sees instead of passively observing them. He’s a merc that most strongly punishes lone wolf players, while being a lone wolf himself. That’s contradictory design, completely detached from the team structure, and that’s stupid.

(Thai-San) #56

I don’t get why he get’s all that hate. Indeed he’s a strong merc but also a really situational merc which get’s better the better his team is.

I played like 20 rounds as, with and against him now.

On defense he’s perfect to flank the enemy push and pick off the medics and range mercs while his team distracts the rest.
On Offense he sneaks behind the enemy line and kills their snipers oder other key defense mercs while those are focused on the push.

But if you want to do something apart from these tactics you’ll have a hard time. Without chopper the only mercs he can onehit are Aura and Sparks and those mercs are designed so they can’t take that much damage. And Phantom isn’t the only one who can onehit those. Every Merc can do that with the good old stiletto. His armor sounds OP on paper, yes. But on the battlefield the energy is depleted really fast. One random explosion or a few lucky shots and the shild ist gone and mostly a huge chunk of his life too. And you won’t encounter hims with a full freshly activated armor most of the time. With that gone. He’s just a 120hp (mostly less) merc with a SMG and a buffed cricket bat.
His invisibility isn’t that strong as well. Most of the time I can the other Phantoms pretty well if you compare it to other games with this kind of ability (like Blacklight Retribution, Team Fortress 2, Ghost Recon Online, Halo Reach aso).

Let’s compare him with the TF2 spy for a moment.
Spy

 • Onehits everyone (from the back and sides, sometimes facestabs)
 • No delay between Stabs
 • Completly invisible or even fake his death
 • Can change his model to blend into the enemy team
 • Can equip a powerfull pocket sniper revolver

Phantom

 • Onehits two classes (but can hit multiple targets at once)
 • Huge delay between swings
 • not completely invisible, but get’s an extra shield which uses his cloak
 • Has a SMG

The Spy looks waaay more annoying and frustrating to me.

But back to Dirty Bomb.
Since he can’t onehit most of the mercs and there’s a huge delay between swings the enemy has time to react to him. Full life Proxy for example. Phantom hits her from the back or the side. She survives, turns around and gives him a shotgun round in the face. No more Phantom. Happend a lot to me.
Every weapon has it’s range where it’s awesome. Yeah, his Katana ist the best melee weapon, but it’s kind of his second ability. But a heavy stiletto attack is also really strong and we all know how good those shotguns are at close range.
And take Vassili. He sits in the las corner of the map, hardscoping that one corner the attackers have to pass and headshots people. Onehit, insta gib across the map. If he’s lucke a double, tripple or even quad kill due to bullet penetration. Phantom on the other hand has to make his way to you and take his 1+ swing(s) to get you down leaving him behind enemy lines (maybe even wounded) with a (short) cooldown on his ability. So what makes him so much more OP then other mercs.
If I fight a Rhino it takes 3 swings to kill him. Should be enough time to turn around and riddle me with bullets instanly.
Fletchers panic sticky all over the place, killing off my shield and then onehitting me with a shotgun while jumping backwards.
Mines can still deal a huge chunk of dmg and alert every one in range to finish me off.
Airstrikes, Atillery, Grenades, Lasers, LMGs and of course those damn suicide grenades. All those things deal with Phantoms as good as with any other merc.

He’s only over powered if you don’t open your eyes or playing the lone wolf and srsly: Don’t play a lone wolf in Dirty Bomb. Phantom is the hard way to learn that lesson.

I can’t wait to get those juicy Disagrees and Dislike from all those Phantom haters who don’t want to make a post themselfs. Mmmmmm, gimme gimme gimme :open_mouth:

(Nervous) #57

This is not TF2…

Its broken the game. It is 100% more fun when there is not one on any team. Infact people should be vote kicking Phantom players

(awesomePenguin) #58

It’s a chore to keep tabs on and (try to) kill him. As is, he can hit you once with the katana then fire a bullet or two to kill you. Minimal input, maximal result. Happy fun times!

(GregHouseMD) #59

@ThaiSan

That’s the most selective and disingenuous comparison I’ve ever seen. I mean, you kinda neglected to mention Phantom has a shield that puts his health on par with Rhino’s when he needs it, that his SMG is among the most powerful guns in the game ( period, not just among SMGs ), that his swing animation is incredibly generous in terms of range and timing, and that there are no frickin’ flamethrowers to turn Phantom to cinders.

(Thai-San) #60

@GregHouseMD
Well I did mention the shield but “on par with Rhino” is a little over the top don’t you think? I don’t have exact numbers (if you have any share them) but when I get shot by anything it takes a huge chunk of the bar. He has 120 hp so you want to say that his shield has a capacity of 130? I don’t think so.

edit:
Silly me. Rhino has 200 not 250 hp
His shield would be 80 then.

Are talking about the blishlock, Crozni or Kek? I know you were refering to the KEK but nearly every SMG is “one of the strongest guns in the game” “Best SMG” “Op as f*ck” and what not. Depends on the person who wrote the comment
Some say the Bitchlock is the best SMG if you are good at aiming for the head. Many people worship the Crozni and the new trend is the KEK, so let’s not talk about weapons. Every one likes other weapons. Okay, some are better then others but if you can handle it you can rock with every gun.

His Melee weapon is the best out there, yeah. And that’s because it’s kind of his second ability like Rhinos 250 200 hp are his ‘second ability’.

Soon there will be molotovs
But setting him on fire isn’t as usefull as in TF2. He isn’t totally invisible, he can’t disguise, he can’t camp for the whole match in one corner without getting visable. If you know there’s a Phantom he will run or attack, he can’t do more then that within his 6 seconds of invisibility.
