I’ve never understood what’s the big deal about fake-nicking. I like the idea of protecting my “identity” a bit, so that people won’t recognize me all the time.
If people are so austere about it, why don’t they use their real name?

I dont play as DG, havent since 2002 or something (well, actually davegod but eh).
There’s fakenicking and aliasing though, tho wether the distinction is only in my head i dunno. fakenicking i tend to consider to be pretending to be another player, while aliasing is just going anon-ish. fakenicking is hence really very lame and i’d quite happily ban players for it.
I use the same regular 3 nicks just about all the time, about anyone i’m interested in knowing who i am knows them anyway.
Erm, no I don’t really, not on the server where i’m a regular anyway.
Mainly because other regulars do it, and it annoys me trying to find out who they are.
Just wastes time away from playing the game.
I’m an admin there and need to know who to keep an eye on etc. There are some regular cheats who join the server, and trouble makers.
Also, most of the regulars there keep the same name so it’s more of a community, if people start changing names that all starts to fall apart.
Although, I suppose there benefits to it if you’re having an off day
As server admin, sometimes dont have a choice if you really want to play and not answer stupid questions all night.
I think of fake-nicking as merely using another randomly chosen name as oppose to your regular moniker. I don’t understand why some of these “celebrities” don’t fake-nick more often, though; it must be annoying to get all those questions and attention all the time. Maybe they like it–I don’t know.
fake-nicking to me is using some elses name, tags and colours included
I use a couple white names when pubbin and when I admin on our server for anonimity
I once and a while like to use a random name and pretend i’m a panzer noob. Or any other type of noob.
Sometimes I like to tease my friends, and laugh on the inside when they go about telling me yesterday’s gaming experience.
I used a couple of different aliases, although I don’t have any “celebrity” status to hide from…
Mhhh, I usely play with random nicknames at clan servers from clans that lost vs my clan, and listen to their whines about it
I used to use my real name which is, as cruel fate would have it, is E(rnest) T(erence) Player.
*raises fist to sky
O cruel fates! Why do you mock me/us so?
Seriously though, anonymity is one thing but why on earth would anyone want to impersonate another player? Time to get out more.
We do sometimes go on pub servers with [SD] tags, and have yet to be called on it. Although that may have something to do with us flaming each other over why the MP40 does so much more damage than the Thompson and how it unbalances the game etc.
Self-Flaming Noobs…dressed as Self-Flaming Noobs. It’s a brilliant disguise, you’ll have to admit : )

Huh I thought the guns where practicly the same in ET? :eek3:[/quote]
whooooosh
So, are the games on tonight?
{Edit}
Whoops, wrong thread, damn you FireFox and your tabs… not really, I love you really
{/Edit}
Ever since I (more or less) dropped off playing ET regularly, I adopted an alias to my (then) playing name (i.e. this nick). It was getting a bit much tbh as I was never a truly great player, just a 56k pubber who didn’t know when to back off. Always felt like a bit of a dissapointment when other players recognised the name but my shooting skills couldn’t match up (cows arse and banjo spring to mind).
I like my nicks too much to change em. And I try to gravitate towards servers where the majority of the players are mature enough that I wont HAVE TO fake-nick.
Generally I play under the Alias’es “CrazyManwithaGun” or “EjaculatoryRailGun”

I always recognise your name as it makes me think of Sock himself, the former Splash Damage staffer - so i always think you are his evil alter ego… :disgust:
Anyway i only ever change my name at LAN Parties when drunk… VPL|Sunday Driver and the like :bump:
i always think you are his evil alter ego…
Lol, well maybe that’s a bit strong - there’s actually a post somewhere on here from when I realised who ‘sock’ actually was. Quite embarrassing tbh. I remember when I first was using IRC and had ‘EvilSock’ as the default name and ‘GoodSock’ if I lost my IRC connection and had to wait for my login to timeout. That was the ‘true’ alter-ego as I was always one for badgering the #christian channels with inane questions about the nature of um, god and the like - ah well.
I might have been an arrogant so-and-so from time to time but probably not a true alter-ego to sock. FrumpTheSpoon is much better
idk, if yoru in a clan and fake nick then im against it becasuse you should always play with your clan tags on.
if yoru not in a clan then i could care less if your known as suchandsuch and are really good but play under a different name.
Well, I guess it’s about loyalty to the clan in that sense. Be proud to show off your tag, and don’t hide it.
Still there are the same reasons why people change their alias’ whether they are in a clan or not, and I don’t think clan members think of that all the time while playing.
I mean, if you were a clan leader (maybe you are), it would be nice to see all your members with their tags while playing, it would make you a little better known and would feel more like a group rather than a bunch of individuals who are thrown together.
