Dedicated Servers
In-case it wasn’t clear I was trolling it, thought it was universally accepted that Microsoft dropped the ball big time on this.
Linux and or unix are the standard O/S for servers, because they work
that said, not sure UnReal engine does linux
From what I understand from a lot of other developers, there is no native unix for Unreal. People have been able to get their servers to run via Wine, but it is always a bit unstable.
FWIW I run Win 2008 R2 64bit on my box, and it seems pretty standard for me, and works flawlessly. At least so far.
But I don’t think the server have to run the Unreal engine because you are not rendering any graphics on it.
Good news Badman, but it seems people want to know:
- Will players be able to rent servers?
- Will 3rd parties be able to offer DB servers for rent?
- Will anybody be able to download a binary and setup their own server?
Will there be LAN (off-line) mode ?
I’m tired of having 2 versions of all my games (the “legal” one to play online and the “LAN” one)…
My guess is that DB will have a LAN mode. Im not sure about Brink, but ET and ETQW had LAN modes so I guess DB will ahve it too.
if there is no dedicated servers, i will UN-install, write dirty bomb on a piece of paper and burn it symbolically and never play it again. and when I tell the story to my grandchildren I will tell them of a legendary game company that burned me twice (Brink included) but i will still be wearing a enemy territory T.
Dont blame anybody else than yourself when you got tricked by the same man/company twice
But Badman already said that the alpha is running on dedicated servers. I think the 1.0 will also run on dedicated servers
