Dedicated Servers

(MoonOnAStick) #41

Good news Badman, but it seems people want to know:

  • Will players be able to rent servers?
  • Will 3rd parties be able to offer DB servers for rent?
  • Will anybody be able to download a binary and setup their own server?

While a good game in many respects, the server arrangement in Tribes: Ascend definitely wasn’t optimal so I’m keen to know the exact model for Dirty Bomb. Personally I’d settle for the ability to rent from approved hosting providers (competing on server spec, latency and price.)

this is really really good news.

Thank You so very much

Do I dare in this smal closed forum to mention the Word “Linux Server binaries” ? if You could confirm that My Day/Month/Year would just be great Im sure

Badmans post was encouraging but I’d still like an answer to these questions before I get my hopes up

I used to only play games with dedicated servers and hated the “auto join” match making mechanic. But I’ve kind of done a 180 and actually like the match making now. It would be nice to have a hybrid match making where you can tweak how the game finds open servers for you.

For example, I only want to play 3 maps out of 8 provided. I can filter that down, click the “play now button” and it will find me the best dedicated public server.

(NHLfan) #46

that are good news!

(temprider) #47

The Servers @ Alpha are great but maybe the slots are too small. i think there must be more slots 24- 36.

(Dragonji) #48

This doesn’t mean SD is going to release server files for all

(Patriotqube) #49

is that funny? :frowning:

(Dragonji) #50

It isn’t BUT I may understand SD as they have to make sure nobody will “hack” the files.

Your continual cryptic answers do your cause no good. Glad to hear the alpha is running on a dedicated server. I would expect nothing less. I am also happy to hear that you"re “hugely aware of how important dedicated servers are to the community”. Now, is there a chance you could give some direct answers to our questions? Stop acting like a gamer politician, and just tell us what we want to know?

Will there be stand alone, completely independent, dedicated server files released on the day of this games release, that we can setup our own servers?

There are many GSP’s out there, that I am sure would like to know the same thing. You did it with ET, ETQW, and Brink. Can you PLEASE let us know if it will be done with Dirty Bomb as well? I do not think it is an unreasonable question, and I am quite certain that Splash Damage has already decided on which way you plan to go.

I would just like to know, so I can know whether I wish to add this to my watch list, or my block list. Pretty simple. If I like what I hear, it goes on my watch list and I continue to return to these forums, and VERY seriously consider buying into the alpha test. If not, I add it to my black/block list, and delete my browsers bookmark to this forum. I am a pretty straight shooter, and don’t like having my time wasted. So if you could, please take 5 mins out of your busy schedule and let us know what your plans are for dedicated servers.

Thank you for your time.

FTFY by removing the rudeness and chest thumping.

(badman) #53

If I had final answers for all those questions, I’d post them up. A few key pieces are still to be confirmed.

As noted, Dirty Bomb already runs on dedicated servers, and you’ve pointed out that we have a history of working with GSPs and making standalone servers available to end users too. We want to continue giving you as much flexibility as we can when it comes to running servers (whether you like to rent or have your own box), but the exact details are still being worked out.

As soon as everything’s confirmed, we’ll announce it here. Thanks for your patience!

actual dedicated servers are a fantastic idea, but seeing as how its F2P, it hasn’t been done in a veery long time haha hopefully they follow through and “keep it simple, stupid”. Client side hosting is the worst on PC
seeing as how its F2P, it hasn’t been done in a veery long time
Team Fortress 2 has dedicated servers and is F2P …

(rivo3622) #56

it came out in 2007…it has been 6 years since TF2…like i said, it hasn’t been done in a veery long time

(en2ie) #57

Don’t forget it started as a paid title and then became F2P as a test by valve to see if it was viable - it turned out people really like hats.

(TacTicToe) #58

We’ve been burned by many developers in the past. Though F2P is awesome, and I have hundreds of hours logged on ET as a result, I honestly have no problems paying for a game. Hell I paid full retail price for Brink, which turned out to be a colossal failure. ET has infinitely more players/servers online, then Brink. F2P vs Paid, well done vs not so well done and rushed.

I will be elated if I am able to host a server on my dedicated box. Preferably ranked, larger maps with 24+ players and I am a happy camper. No match making will be icing on the cake.

(Psygnosis) #59

I have been in an Enemy Territory clan now for over 8 years many of them as the Owner of the clan. My entire clan and members are awaiting the news on this about some kind of dedicated or slot servers that may pop up in the future?

F2P is the way to go. Our clan has members which range from 13 to over 55!! We all play Enemy Territory still even if it is an old game now it still has that X factor of playability and a great story behind the game. Dirty Bomb I hope gives the community what it wants at the end of the day? For we are the paying and playing public that will in the end support this fine game on launch!

I know that I will be one of the first when these servers become available to the public for sure.

Cheers,

Psy.

P.S. How did this guy get my name? I’m the real Psygnosis lol

+1 for Dedicated Linux Server binaries!
