Dealing with cheat accusations

(Cerebrate) #1

What is the best way to deal with cheat accusations?

Many would blurt out, “Don’t play on noob servers!”. True enough, but sometimes late at night, there aren’t that many servers to choose from.

Basically, what should I say if one or more players accuse me? I don’t really care all that much what they believe, as long as they shut up and play. What would be most effective?

Accusations doesn’t happen often, thankfully, but last night, for example, was annoying enough, as someone on my own team tried to vote me off. Their arguments was that I had more headshots than frags–can you believe it?–and that I supposedly didn’t know how to color my name or something like that.

I get the feeling that keeping my mouth shut would only increase the suspicion. They’re like a mob, though; they’re just out to get you, so that they can feel better about themselves. Being bit of an ass, like I did last night, don’t help that much either I think; more like putting gas on the fire. Calmly telling them that, “No, sweetie, I do not cheat”… I don’t know.

As mentioned, this is a noob server and you can hardly expect better, but I just want to play instead of jabbering with idiots.

Suggest them to record a demo of you and to post it to some popular location like the splashdamage forum, so some other players can give opinion.

Then they usually shut up, because they start recording or they wont to appear as noobs by posting a “clean” demo.

(Cerebrate) #3

That’s not a bad idea; it puts them off. I always record demos myself whenever I play. Maybe the most annoying part is that they didn’t even spec me to be sure. Ugh.

(Sauron|EFG) #4

I’ve suggested that a few times, and although it didn’t make them shut up it did make other players understand that I wasn’t hiding anything (which is a good thing if there’s a kick vote).

(Cerebrate) #5

I could make it a bind. Something like this:

Dear accuser(s). I grow weary of this relentless whining, so I suggest you record a demo and let the eggheads at Splash Damage’s forum settle the argument. w00t. End communication.

Many people will quite freely accuse you of cheating, yet can’t be bothered or refuse to spectate and demo you. :frowning:

If only et existed in an ideal world. :chef:

(SwordOfDamocles) #7

Noone has accused me of cheating in ages :<

I must have become shit

Hmm just own them even more

i guess the real question is, who are you playing against? if you’re on an unpatched shrub doublejump server and are able to track players who are flying thru the air like superman, thinking they can avoid your shots, you’re gonna get hassled for having skill. on the other hand, if you play on servers with good players, you won’t likely be accused unless you actually are cheating - because they know the difference.

take the time to look at some league .config files, then setup some ASE filters to only show you servers which most closely resemble comp settings. odds are this is where the best players go pubbing, because they want to pub on servers similar to a match environment. you could get real specific and only play stopwatch servers for example, but if you enjoy campaigns and levelling up you can still filter for the better campaign servers by looking for 2.60 and a recent etpro. reason being that older game versions generally means newer, less experienced players - and that’s what you don’t want, because they won’t understand the difference between cheating and skill.

for NA, i suppose it’s generally agreed that the et-center boxes are the best pubs to find top players. afaik, the bio server is similar as far as where some top EU players go pubbing.

Perhaps it’s time to cheat?

ouroboro: It was ETPro 3.1.1x something last time. But, as mentioned, I only resolve to these late at night when there’s nothing else to be had. Besides, it’s only one map or two. Don’t think I’ve ever played shrub, except once in its infancy. It’s a big problem, though; it rarely happens, but when it does, it’s pretty annoying.

(eRRoLfLyNN) #11

Cerebrate I have seen you play once I think, and it was obvious you were hackin - you should just come clean m8 tbh

:skull:

(Sauron|EFG) #12

Even noobs sometimes connects to servers with good players (which is a relative thing btw  ), and even moderately skilled clan players sometimes accuses other players.

(Ragnar_40k) #13

Usually mid-skilled players, who think they know the game, accuse better players of cheating. Beginners take it as it is and good players know the difference (as stated above).

You’re lucky you don’t play the Xbox version of RTCW then. It’s a crying match if you even use a Panzer,no shit they can’t handle it and start votes to try and get you kicked :???:

Bah I am an admin and usually I tell the accuser(s) to deal with it, we did have some problems with true hackers and it took me months to get enough evidence for me to feel comfortable with issuing the ban. We have several good players on our team and often get accused of cheating. Tis the life of a skilled player :disgust: I would say not all shrub servers are noobish but it is the trend, do some shopping. I no longer play pro because of a disheartening experience I wish not to talk about here. I’d say your best bet is to find a server where voting is disabled and the admins aren’t childish. Our server is shrub so you might not like it. I’ll try to ask some of my buddies if they have some pro servers that are in the “cool” category or have voting disabled.

(ouroboro) #16

sigh why do i even bother?

(Fusen) #17

I just laugh at them, like putting “haha you’re such an idiot” and then carry on playing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Cerebrate) #18

Very good point. It’s like you hurt their pride or something, because once they think they’re good at it, their egos starts growing, and when they see that they still got a long way to go, they just can’t take it. :bash:

(squadjot) #19

i usually…

accuser: “you cheat!, you use aimbot!!”
me: “thanx, i take that as an compliment :)”

The only way to deal with cheating is to lock down the game all round. Lock the ruleset down big time and don’t let the admins change things. Just like chess you lock the rules down and once the server starts you don’t allow anyone to alter anything. Using the programmers, get rid of the voting system. Using the programmers, get rid of any altering of the server in any way. No changing of map timers, no allowing admins to revive players, no one allowed to modify the code of the program after the rules have been set.

My point is that there’s nothing you nor anyone other than splashdamage can do to remove the accusations. Because the more the admins can screw around with the settings the more likely it is that players will learn that no one is paying attention to the actual rules and they can try any number of things to try to cheat. As well, only splashdamage can lock the admins down from messing with things, such as setting the timers on a map to 5 seconds for axis and 15 seconds for allies. These timers were in place for a reason-- balance the maps. Allies have farther to go hence they need a shorter spawn timer.

The game is just out of balance. Too many alterations by the admins. If an admin sees his team is loosing (and an admin is usually some pimply faced teenager that’s part of a clan) who has no sense of honor. For instance I have seen dumb-assed admins alter the number of heavy weapons during the map when they saw they were loosing. I’ve seen servers where the timers for recharge of weapons were altered.

Then there are the maps based on maps based on maps that are altered to advantage the players of the team the admin always plays on.

The point is that all this should be locked down and unalterable, period. No one should be able to adjust anything. Nothing. With the complete access to the server code any admin, any mod creator, anyone can alter the game.

How about let’s getting whomever it is to fix some of the changes they made to the game? I’ve seen players shot me around corners. For instance, I am in a duel and I duck around the corner during the melee, but my opponent keeps hitting me. I’ve seen the same thing with a panzer.

I’ve seen panzers rechage immediately after fire. I’ve even seen cheat servers setup to play and test cheat programs. I’ve watched as they discussed the cheats by name and what they do on the cheat servers.

I’ve seen admins accuse linux players as cheaters because they couldn’t snapshot their screens saying that the client was messed up.

How about how bad-assed they made the medics. Hell, in all wars the medics were the ones to die first. They are the ones out there with their butts in a sling getting wounded. Now they have tremendous regen and as longs as they get level 1 medic they get a decent amount of armor. Not to mention their regen and their ability to heal themselves. Yet the medics are extremely hard to kill. I play a medic and It is very hard to kill an opposing teams medics.

The point is, that no matter how much you are accesed of cheating the likelihood is that the admins are altering the game themselves and they are probably some pimply faced teen who can’t control his emotions long enough to just let you play without warning, complaining, and threatening you.

If splashdamage would simply lock down the rules people would just play and we’d have fewer and fewer instances where cheats are in question because we’d know exactly how things are to work and everyone will know when they don’t work.

My only disclaimer here is that I don’t know if some of these things are still in the game, such as the admin revive. I do know that it was in the game because the admins revived me over and over on one map. I know that the shooting in arc exists because I have experienced this over and over. My ability to get out of the way is factored down because the game gives priority to the mechanics rather than my reflexes.
