day/night cycle

(madness) #1

Will the time of day change during a round on one map ? Say, you begin in the morning and by the end of the round its afternoon/evening or smth like that ?

One guy at TQW claims it is like that. I kinda doubt it…

(sledGe) #2

lol i dont think ET:QW will ship with that “feature” :nag:

(ayatollah) #3

Well they have said that they will have real-time day/night cycle.

If its not realtime there is definately the option to play at different times of the day.

(bobjones) #4

ooo…i didn’t know that. badass

(digibob) #5

:uhoh:

(TheKaiser) #6

The options for time of day are there. I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to rig up a server script that changes that over time as it’s just a variable you can change in console. I can’t wait for some trippy super fast day cycles that only take 5 seconds and are nonstop. I’ll call it Disco of Death.

(Mavrik347) #7

lol, face drops on the verge of crying “Poor little programmer, all these silly things to make.”

(nUllSkillZ) #8

Hmm I think DoD is in use already.

(carnage) #9

where have you herd this about day/night cycles. there have defaintly been discusions on this and the effects in game but i dont think there has been any actul confirmation from a SD member and digibob’s smiley doesnt fill me with hope

(TheKaiser) #10

They showed us (the press) how time of day could be switched with a var in console last January at activision.

(Danyboy) #11

i think you mean one of the editor tools which draws the night’s sky showing each star’s correct location for any given date

(GlobalWar) #12

Would be cool if you start a match in daylight and it starts to get dark and i forgot my flashlight

Brings back memories of my time in the army…

(Bravo) #13

You must have been in the American Army to have a flashlight, cos in the British Army we had no such luxury. To read maps in the dark, we had to light our farts

changing day/night cycles can totally add to the atmosphere during gameplay. i experienced that when i played dead rising and was thinking when the f*ck will it become day again … and then finally the relief when the sun rose up and so did my aim

story in quake wars could be that the strogg got a big mothership which fires a beam at the earth which increases speed of the rotation … something like you saw in the initial Drej attack sequence of Titan AE (which is a most awesome movie btw)

true but you not just talking about coding something that will change a few sky light settigns and a new skybox, there could be major impacts on gameplay and totaly throw the balance in a stage of the map and the extra work it would create scripting all the lights on buildings etc to come on off at right time. i gess that could be done with some key values in for the light eneties rather then scripting each one though

although it does seem to be a shame to build a game on a dynamicly lit engine and have a mostly static lighting theme

(ayatollah) #16

No that was mentioned too, but it was probably in the same article that they said the maps can be played at different times of the day.

(TheKaiser) #17

No, I mean watching them go into console and seeing the map change from noon to sunset and seeing how all the shadows changed significantly making the map radically different.

(Danyboy) #18

well if the time of day did change - it would only be a small amount as campaign maps are only 30 mins long.

who wants to spend 8 hours in a server, on one map?

(TheKaiser) #19

The point is not that time changes over time, the point is that you can set the time for the map and have it play differently. IE The shadows under a tree you used to hide in are now stretched far away because it’s later in the day, etc.

I was thinking it would be fun to write a script to change this variable over time, but at a much faster rate (Like a full day cycle in 1 second)

(Ifurita) #20

It could be very cool to have game lighting match actual server clock time. Every time you played the map, it would be a little different
