CVAR Bug

(schmeisser) #1

My ET setup is completely stock, no CVAR tweaking at all. I keep getting kicked by Punkbuster with a message saying my CVAR is 4000. What’s up with this?

(Sauron|EFG) #2

No details in console?

(Ragnar_40k) #3

Could be the cvar “rate”. Alot of servers require 5000 or higher.

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

You set your connection to dailup in the menu perhaps ?

(Marantz I) #5

I keep getting the same cvar message and then get kicked. It is 40,000 not 4000. I have tried several fixes from websites I found by searching punkbuster cvar and I can’t solve my issue either.

open the console after you get kicked and write down the exact cvar message.

(IneQuation) #7

How about telling us which cvar is it? :nag:

(ouroboro) #8

better yet, type this in the console after it happens:

/condump error.txt

then press enter. then go to the game folder and find error.txt and open it with wordpad (not notepad). scroll down to the bottom, find the error text, copy it and paste it here.

(schmeisser) #9

Thanks for the input. I will try to get the exact error description. What I remember is a message saying something like “warning: cvar 4000, acceptable range 2000-2500”. The problem is sporadic. I did check my connection, which is set for dsl/lan/cable.

(ouroboro) #10

create a file called autoexec.cfg (not autoexec.cfg.txt - turn on file extentions) and place this in it exactly:

seta rate "25000"

place that file in the “etmain” folder in your game directory. now the next time you play on each mod (etpro, etpub, shrub, etc) take a moment to do “/exec autoexec.cfg” in the console, to be sure it’s applies to all your mod configs.

you should be fine after that.

(kamikazee) #11

Two things:

First of all: you typed a zero too much in your code snippet, make it 2500.
And second: autoexec.cfg executes itself automatically at the start of each mod. Seems obvious if you look at the name.

(Calzonzin) #12

2500? Hehehe! You want to make this guy suffer (He’s getting kicked for having it at 4000)? 25000 is way better than 2500…

(WeeBull) #13

well he said

warning: cvar 4000, acceptable range 2000-2500

so maybe he do have to set it to 2500 cuz that’s within the acceptable range

(Calzonzin) #14

But he’s getting kicked for having it at 4000 already, how can setting it lower help?

EDIT: For example, if you have your rate set at 20000 and the server’s max_rate is at 15000 then your client will communicate with the server at 15000, so in this sense you are OK… There is only one good reason to manually set your rate to a value lower than 25000: If you know for a fact that you connection cannot support the max rate of the server you are connecting to. If you are connecting to a server with a max_rate of 25000 and you are connected through a modem, you will not have a good time playing at 25000, you might want to cap your rate at 7000, so setting rate to 7000 is a good thing to do. But it this guy has his rate at 4000 many people might be disallowing players with this low a rate through PB. So, bottom line: If the guy has a decent broadband internet connection, setting the rate at 25000 (the max value) is the way to go, that way it will adjust to the max of every server he connects to.

(kamikazee) #15

This is the message he gets:

warning: cvar 4000, acceptable range 2000-2500

So normally you would set it within the range, no? Setting it higher actually makes it worse here.

(Calzonzin) #16

What he posted was what he could rememner about the error, that does not make it accurate  If we are indeed talking about the rate, then the max value is 25000.

(ouroboro) #17

First of all: you typed a zero too much in your code snippet, make it 2500.

– he has DSL/cable. i said 25000 on purpose.

And second: autoexec.cfg executes itself automatically at the start of each mod. Seems obvious if you look at the name.

– if only that were true. it doesn’t always apply all settings unless manually executed. hence my recommendation - just to be sure.

@OP: ignore kamikaze, do as i suggested.

(kamikazee) #18

Ok, at moments like this I allways regret it when I don’t double check such things… :blah:
ouroboro was right after all…
Even though 25000 seems high. (It’s actually the highest rate possible, or did they allready increased it behind my back?)

(Northerner) #19

okay, i keep getting this same message on some servers (not all)
and my cvar is 40000 and the range is supposed to be between 2500 - 5000

i have looked in my config and there is nothing in there about a cvar with 40000?
can i just add this to my config file?
seta rate “2500”

(SCDS_reyalP) #20

ffs, post the exact error message. After you get kicked, /comdump somefile.txt and post the last few lines of somefile.txt (with the kick message, not the whole thing) here.

If the server you are trying to connect to is really requiring rate 2500-5000 then it is utterly broken and you should just play somewhere else. If it isn’t, we need to know what it is actually requiring, rather than some loose transcription.

When looking for the rate setting in your configs, be sure to look in each mods directory (etmain, etpro, etpub etc) and under profiles in each of those directories.

@kamikazee
it is possible to set rate and sv_maxrate over 25000. Whether this has the expected effect is uncertain. I suspect that it will top out somewhere around 25-30k even if the settings are higher, but I’m not certain.
