console messages

i know this is one of the last things that are polished, but i’m curious if the quake 4 like player kill messages will be used in QW like they were in the E3 demo or if the ET style messages are considered for the final version.

i mean a message “GDF 1 [Lacerator] Strogg 4” like in quake 4 is kinda annoying. ET is by far much more fun with “… dynamited himself into pieces” and “… was blasted by <playername>'s panzerfaust” and “… never so <playername>'s mortar coming”

besides that i wonder if the very amusing messages will find a way in the retail like
… is on a rampage
… is unstoppable
… is godlike
… seems to become victim of the day

or multikill and something like OMG, MONSTERKILL >>> playername <<< MONSTERKILL

imo these ingame messages have become an important part of ET gameplay and contribute to increase the fun factor.

i hope to see similar things in QW

I’d rather have a way to disable all ‘kill’ messages. I would be happy to actually see messages like ‘Allies have constructed assault ramp !’ or ‘Generator destroyed’.
Last thing I want is additional voice messages which occupy place in message queue. It can already take several seconds before ‘They have constructed assault ramp!’ is played.
I’d prefer to see messages which have actual importance, not more crap.

ET:QW needs a way to filter text and voice messages (client-side). Preferably egrep.

ala cvar modifications to suit your tastes. Would be easy to please everyone just leaving it an option to tinker with in configs.

u might be breaching copywright of another game there…

Besides, rampages and killing sprees are reserved for frag-games.
I highly enjoyed them in UT, but I think they’re just unnecessary in a tactical shooter like ET:QW or W:ET. If you do like them, someone would better start a deathmatch-only mod.

(Zyklon) #6

Yeah real text instead of the Bfish kill messages would be nice. But please, no UT sounds. They are just a pain in the ass to please the ego of some silly frag whores.

(B0rsuk) #7

By the way, I’d like a grep-ish way to filter out servers in server browser. First thing I’d do would be filtering out servers with names containing ‘xp’, ‘save’, or ‘reset’.

Personally, I find myself amused when I read “BrightSoul is on a killing spree”. I’m not a pro, so it’s not happening too often but still, when that happens, I do feel like I’m accomplishing something and that I’m helpful to my team.
If they feel statisfied, I think players will carry on playing the game longer.

And Also, in ET I feel the lack of some acknoledgments but fortunately they will be in QW. In ET, if they wrote “Dynamite planted by BrightSoul”, the team would see I’m actually doing something during the match other than getting continously killed while trying to reach the objective. So, even if my final stats are 5 - 28 my team will know we won the match because I planted the dinamite.

In my opinion, the more text the better. One could always disable some of it via cfg if he feels it’s annoying. I think the minority will do this though.

th way it is in et is dead on imo

why do you feel the need to stroke your e-appendage in game, I hate all that “killing spree” stuff and the “who’s ur daddy” comments that usually follow, I want to know if things are being constructed, hacked, blown, etc. Lack of enemies in my way is indication enough that my team is doing it’s job

(kamikazee) #11

I agree with Nail here. Just the info you need, nothing more.

If you want to see who did it, you might want to check the “Best engineer” award.

(Joe999) #12

i don’t agree here. 2 weeks ago we played with a full server and there were several engineers. some planted, axis defused. whatever. fact is: close to the end i was medic and searched myself an engineer to protect. well, i successfully did. unfortunately i picked the moron who was always planting dynamites at the axis command post and the garrison mg nest instead of the south gun.

QW favors teamplay, imo it would be important to find out which players do stuff wrong or just don’t go for the objective so that the serious players can advise or ignore them.

(SubstandardJones) #13

I’d like the king’s herald to sound trumpets every time I do something the least bit useful. Matter of fact, I want the entire screen to go red every time I get a kill, with the words “SUBSTANDARD BELIES HIS NAME! EVERY KILL DRIPS WITH DELICIOUS IRONY!” flashing on every player’s hud. This should also blind them temporarily for some reason.

Because really, if you don’t have something crowing every time you kill someone, what’s the point? Playing well? Winning the map? Bah! I want the empty, empty glory!

Or you can get best engy award for playing Deathmatch with rifle grenades.

But situations mentioned above could easily be fixed with simple scripts.
Engies planting dynamites at MGs should simply get no exp for it; all kinds of explosives (and flamer !!) can disable static MGs. And covert op destroy it much faster.
Engies should also get less (or no) xp for dynamiting command posts. Usually either
a) covert op can do it much faster. Often if you plant a dynamite at command post, a covop comes and makes you look silly; what’s worse is that it takes more time to build command post this way.
b) there are usually more important things to do for an engineer.

After certain stage of map is reached,(or long before you reach that stage), some constructions should give you no exp. Examples:
axis blowing up the bridge on Fuel Dump after allies blow the tunnel gate (not grate)
allies dynamiting truck barriers before tank is stolen. (gold rush)

Basically fixing engy xp whoring would require manual, map-specific scripting. I expect Splash Damage to do it from now on, because now they’re getting paid for it.

here’s a thought, hang out at the gun instead of trailing puppy-like after any random engi, that way you know you got the right one

(Joe999) #16

and do what? wait for the engy not to arrive because they couldn’t break through alone?

i do get more and more the feeling that it is important to see who does what in the team … i mean if an engy has to plant dyna at the truck barriers while the tank barriers are still not blown he can do it on his own, alone. with new players it’s hard to differ who knows what to do and who doesn’t, or who does what has to be done and who doesn’t.

and i think this is already done in QW, example console message: “GDF9 is hacking the objective”.

(Nail) #17

I guess I see things a little one-sided, I’m usually the engi gettin arty spammed while the medics run by calling “need ammo”

(SniperSteve) #18

I love it when i get 20 kills and my name flahes before everyone’s eyes.

(B0rsuk) #19

Althrough I lke it, it’s a double edged sword. It will get you kicked on some servers. I probably shouldn’t play on these, but it’s the ping that’s the top priority.

(Hakuryu) #20

The less the better.

Why not leave all this screen spam off by default, and let people turn it on if they want it?

I spent hours removing health bar images and moving things to small spaces in Tribes, and spent forever figuring out how to turn off kill messages and the like in ET. It’s pretty annoying to have to ‘work’ to figure out how to remove crap you dont want on your screen.

I would also like to see chat setup with filters. So that when PlayerX says “I need ammo”, only Field Ops will hear or see the text for it. This seems simple to me, and common sense. If you need a medic and keep asking, your voice chats just might cover the footsteps of an approaching enemy. Filter chat presets like this would remove that problem.
