Whilst sounding good, this is not foolproof to keep your surroundings silent.
I know a guy who plays CS:S apart from W:ET and he just can’t stop switching weapons. Even the swap sound can be annoying.
console messages
I hate kill messages. They spam and don’t provide much info to me. Most of them are for people who are outside of my “area of relevance”.
I also don’t care who planted, I just need to know quickly where it was planted.
The honor list is cool, and I always feel good to be on it. Also, as I like to play engie, I don’t like the fact that I’m looked down at just because I am a lonely engie who died a bunch of times trying to build the bridge. (as in “seems to be having a bad day. 5 deaths without a kill”)
Or have I said too much?
If you can keep track of them (mostly on smallish servers or clan matches) they tell you a lot. Knowing that your teammate watching the objective is down, or that the enemy PF who usually camps your exit just got killed can make all the difference. Or just knowing that three of the enemy are down. Of course in RTCW/ET you have to wonder whether they got revivied or not.
Even on larger servers, you can keep track of the people who matter to you.
I’d rather have a “Team mate down” indicator than have to cypher through all the chat spam, that’s usefull information, something like his name in yellow if he’s down waiting for medic, or red if he’s gibbed and waiting for spawn, and I like the idea of “Need a medic” only being seen/heard by medics, same with “Need ammo” , some times the info you need is buried in the chat as it is in ET
Wait a second, so everyone likes the useless ego-stroking “multi-kill” messages, but they don’t like the extremely useful indicators of who killed whom and with what? You’d rather know that some random adrenalined medic got six kills in a row than know that the one guy actually guarding the objective just got killed?
Is there a monster on the wing of the plane?
ET isn’t Unreal Tournament. Kill total is hardly one of the most important stats, especially on the unlimited lives servers so many of you play on. On a maxlives server it’s slightly more important, but even then there are more important things.
How about flashing messages on the screen when someone accomplishes a USEFUL task? I don’t give a crap that the medic just got thirty kills, but I’d love to have a message pop up on the screen to tell me when a medic has thirty revives. The best medics are usually too busy healing and reviving to actually rack up the most kills. Let’s not encourage them to abandon their team by celebrating their useless killing sprees.
You are my hero, and I will forever write songs in praise of your name.
An objective spree could be more multi-purpose.
But what a great and simple idea! :drink:
No sprees and no kill messages… is that clear enough?
Both are useless, no two ways about it. Even if you want to know if your teammate defending dies like the example above… join a fireteam and then you have that information at a glance without having to sift through death messages.
The only time a kill message is useful is if you fire around a corner for example and want to know if you took out that guy hiding up there, but this info can be related on the bottom of the screen like the message from ETPro(not sure if its from this), rather than having to mentally sort the kill messages.
Its called the fireteam, glance at that and you’ll have that info. also how much hp he has if he’s still alive. Its a pretty nifty thing thats already part of W:ET :moo:
Whilst sprees are certainly unnecessary, I think that kill messages should still stay on by default.
Juggling with fireteams is not allways wanted as it takes a few votes to get accepted.

What about “tagging” a few buddies to keep their stats on your screen, whether you are in their fireteam or not? IT would give the same info, except that it’s not mutual and does not need voting.
The list would be cleared on respawn, as it’s only a temporal list then. It could even remove someone from this list when he runs off to the other side of the map.
I personally find the Wolf Et screen spams way to much info that is pointless, love the filter idea good for both sides cause only the classes involved hear it. I was think that a best Team Player Award would be good as often this are the ppl that dont get an Award but do have a impact on the game.
You can have no info at all on the Hud if you choose, I don’t see why people complain about too much info. Theres only as much info as you choose to have.
This would only be for dudite people tbh. U gots to grease loads o people, do ur class job and still team work it up.
Seriously tho, do we really need more awards. Isnt knowing that u did a good job urself enough or must we try and impress people, “look at the awards i got, i am teh mega l33t tbh” and so on! Boo to awards!
It’s wierd that “I ain’t got no friends” means rather “I have friends” because of the double negation. Oh well, 'tis certainly the same as “killed to death” :E
