The best way to undermine premises is to pus them to absurdity. If you operate under the idea that all limitation is bad then you’re going to run into a proverbial wall.
Community Question: Shooting While Sprinting
Or you could counter the point instead of wildly avoiding it with a deflecting statement.
I’m getting sick of this ‘wah wah limitations’’ attitude applied across the board. Limitations define the game, without limitations there would be no game.
It only stems from people playing a game and thinking ‘you know what would be cool? If I didn’t need to reload now’ or ‘if I could sprint at double the speed’ ‘if I could jump higher’ ‘if I didn’t have recoil or spread’. Completely forgetting that the rest of the players in the match work with the same constraints.
Skill is how players are able to deal with the constraints in the game, how to mitigate their obstructions and how to turn them into advantages. Too much and you’re excluding too many styles, and the same thing for too little. By saying you don’t want them you’re saying you can’t deal with them accordingly.
That’s a very narrow minded view, and does indeed suggest you missed the point completely.
All I got from that is “the game has it so that’s the way it should be”, you’re a very conflicted person. You want games to be like other games, then when someone else wants change you tell them they should deal with what they have, yes I do say so.
I want games to be like other games? Do you even read my posts? I bring ideas to the table that haven’t been tried anywhere.
That was a predictable reply, Ravenshield does it this way, SC2 does it that way, blizzard and battlenet does it this way, the shattered horizon guys do it that way. Must be imagining those replies.
Of course if you dig through 7k posts and you’ll find whatever fits your case.
Or I could just throw out a wild extreme example to loosely make my point against those that want something I don’t, when really I’ve made similar posts on more defined threads that aren’t asking a general question… oh wait… that was you!
My wild example functioned in debunking the idea that all limitation is bad. If you think a form of limitation is unreasonable you’ll have to argue it rather than just assume it.
Your wild example functioned as loosely suggesting that all limitations are good and necessary, your example brought as much to the table as his… i.e. nothing. Are you saying you’ve never suggested or hinted at changes purely because it would drive the game in a direction you want it to go?
I’m not saying all limitations are good and necessary.
Too much and you’re excluding too many styles, and the same thing for too little.
I want to see a diverse set of skills clash. I want to see a chess-guy being outgunned and I want to see a bunny-hopping fraghead being outsmarted.
For that you need to carefully tune what you allow and don’t allow in the game. Simplistic attitudes constantly railing against any limitation in the game are highly destructive to achieving this.
As far I see it, he didn’t say all limitations at all, he mentioned 1 and you were the person that mentioned all… you’re adding a variable that didn’t even exist just to suit your point. I’ll ask again, are you saying you’ve never suggested or hinted at changes purely because it would drive the game in a direction you want it to go?
I didn’t respond directly to the above post, if I read that right he was defending limitations to some extend. It’s a general annoyance with the prevalent attitude on this forums and this thread in particular.
I’ll ask again, are you saying you’ve never suggested or hinted at changes purely because it would drive the game in a direction you want it to go?
Yes, but the direction I want things to move in isn’t necessarily a direction that would solely suit me as a player. I’m not here lobbying for getting a game tailored to my talents.
Yes as in you’ve never suggested changes to suit what you like? So all those ravenshield does this and shattered horizon does that etc. were purely for the games benefit and nothing to do with that fact that that’s actually how you like things to be? So selfless of you.
Thanks. And yeah indeed. I’m not particularly good at those games. I sometimes have my moments but I’ll gladly let those that truly mastered the game take the stage.
More evasive deflecting so you don’t have to take full responsibility for your reply? If you’re going to call someone out on a point and then have the audacity to wildly blow it out of proportion, then have the down right cheek to skew the facts and claim he said all when he mentioned 1 (I won’t say lie here, though I probably should), then at least have some integrity to yourself and admit you’ve done exactly the same in the past instead of preaching the ‘holier than thou’ attitude… that’s a far bigger annoyance around this place than people saying how they genuinely feel.
