Community Question: Shooting While Sprinting

(badman) #1

Sprinting has been a staple of our own games as well as many other first person shooters for a long time. What hasn’t been around much lately is the ability to also fire your weapon while sprinting. This is leads us to this week’s Community Question:

Do you want to be able to fire your weapon while sprinting at a huge spread penalty (and also be fired at by other sprinters), or should firing your weapon interrupt the sprint?

Cast your vote in the poll attached to this post and please share the reasons for your decision in the comments along with any games that do particularly well in how they handle sprinting.

I voted other, “you should be able to shoot while sprinting with no penalty”

Games need to stop slowing everything down…

Quake live/tribes/ETQWpro/etc

(Runeforce) #3

I voted shoot while sprinting. Another great thing about your games (as opposed to how it’s been increasingly done in other games) is the ability to strafe while sprinting.

(gold163) #4

Shoot while sprinting with no penalty. Sprinting shouldn’t exist in the first place.

(tokamak) #5

I think a player should be able to sacrifice all his shooting power for the sake of mobility. Keeping it possible to fire a gun while running at maximum capacity waters this choice down.

(Apples) #6

Other, little penalty while sprinting but not that much, as apoc said, stop slowing down everything, if the general pace is right it wont be too speedy

(tokamak) #7

Mind you that this isn’t about the general speed of the game, it’s about the differences in speeds and the cost you pay for extra speed.

(DarkangelUK) #8

I’m an ‘other’ as well, the question is very general. In arena shooters like Quake 3, I want my aim stable regardless of how fast I’m going… sprinting is your default speed and you actively have to choose to slow down. With games like RtCW/W:ET etc, sprint is not your default speed, so if I’m sprinting then give me a penalty, but not when I’m going at default speed.

(badman) #9

Assume that sprinting is a separate mode that sits on top of the default movement speed.

Question seems a little ambiguous for me to give you a detailed response :frowning:

Sprinting in what direction? I cant see myself ever shooting while sprinting forward… the cost of that is youre making yourself a bigger target. If you mean using sprint to dodge from a static position? Thats something different altogether then.

Basically the response to every community question.

(knippon) #12

why are you asking this question? For a new game.?

I say no penalty for sprinting and shooting.

(Gene818) #13

I think this ability could be used ingame, but with a huge spread penalty and only available for one handed weapons (pistols and machine-pistols), so that you can not sprint and fire two-handed weapons (SMG, AR, heavy weapons) even with a huge spread penalty.

(Loffy) #14

Same speed but more spread, while sprinting.

This^

Spread penalties should ONLY apply to certain weapons that would require it as a balance measure.

(Runeforce) #16

I’d say do it like in ETQW: abillity to sprint with all weapons, but make a penalty to your sprint speed determined by your active weapons power. But ofc. you would also have to leave CSJ intact

(Humate) #17

Pretty much tokamak. Theres about 2 features in total in the “Bad” games list, that I can point out and say - these ideas actually are pretty decent. But if SD seriously wants something they can dissect and marvel at, the game(s) already sits in their studio.

(Snotling) #18

I voted firing while sprinting with no penalty (or a bit less accuracy) for the reason Apoc gave.

(tokamak) #19

I like the killstreaks from COD. They’re fun and give tension to the game. In COD they’re incredibly powerful though (which fits the cheesy combat), in a game like ETQW I’m thinking killstreaks could reward minor bonuses to your relevant class.

i do everything while sprinting.
