Collectors Edition
You think personalised action figures would be profitable!?!?

Ever wonder why limited run things cost a fortune to buy, let alone something that is ONE OFF as would be the case here?

I could see the main archetypes being included, but not personalised - unless you want your collectors edition box set to cost you $350+
350$…Not really.

The WoW figurine pricing, which look to be of pretty good quality, is $129.95 for the full figure and $69.95 for a bust - HERE

The SPORE figures are $25 for a small and $49 for the large - HERE

So even if they were on the pricier end, like the WoW figures, that’s like $180 - $200, which it would most likely be less. Companies already exist who specialize in creating 3d prints from 2d images, so it’s not like they would need to invent the tech to do it.

The Halo Reach Legendary Edition was $150, and it included:

* The game disc housed in an ONI "black box".
* Exclusive Sangheili Officer armor and SPARTAN armor effect (flaming helmet).
* Artifact bag containing Dr. Halsey's personal journal and other classified documents and effects that unravel long-held secrets of the Halo universe. (info, backstory and artwork)
* Dr. Halsey’s ONI security badge.
* Embroidered SPARTAN-II patch.
* Exclusive hand-painted Noble Team statue crafted by McFarlane Toys.
* UNSC-themed custom packaging.
* Falcon avatar gear (for your xbox live avatar)
* Halo: Reach Documentary, viewable on Waypoint.

If they can include all that for $150, I think Brink could manage for well under $350.

As for being “one off,” the statues in the Legendary edition were only obtainable by buying the Legendary edition, so they were one off as well. Besides, when I suggested they offer the service to the community, I meant they could offer the service to everyone, not just for a collectors edition, so players could order figurines of all 16 characters they created if they wanted to. I really don’t see how it wouldn’t be profitable. People would definitely buy them.

It’s just not practical due to cost and logistics to expect something like a unique character model to be included as part of such a package. A collectors edition should offer greatest value to the biggest market with the lowest overhead. Your example of Halo goodies is easily mass produced or digitally available, you offer something unique to each customer simple things like shipping and time start eating away at profits.

you offer something unique to each customer simple things like shipping and time start eating away at profits.

How so?

 • You include a code that is redeemable online for a personalized figurine.
 • You log onto Brink website and enter code. It takes you to a section on the site where you can essentially build the virtual character you want to create. You choose body type, clothing, everything you would in the actual game. You also choose a pose you would like your character to have.
 • when you are happy with results, you submit it and enter payment options.
 • to solve shipping costs, make player pay for shipping.
 • to solve time problems…what time problems? The item would need to be created and delivered, so players would know that it would take time to receive it.

I’m really not seeing where all these problems would lie, especially if the service was readily available and not just as a collector’s edition perk.

(Crytiqal) #104

I think some people fail to understand that you would order a custom figurine AFTER you build your own in the game, thus NOT shipping with a collectors edition, but buying it seperatly later on.

Horse: the example of halo isn’t comparable at all. This is mass production, every collectors edition had the same figures in it. If you want to offer custom figures, that would be VERY expensive. I don’t know if you ever looked into the costs of making a mould, but you can’t make those for $350, I can tell you that. That is just the mould then, after that you need the materials to create the figure, hire the machinary to inject them and then comes the paintjob of which you need an infinate amount of templates because of all the different clothing available. If you want your custom figure to look any good I think that’ll be at least $1000 if not more. If they however pick a few options and provide these, I suppose they could come at a decent price, but still they’ll have to sell many to get some profit out of that.

My example came from this: https://www.gamingheads.com/index.php?option=com_myphp&Itemid=3&product=84

And that’s the cost for something that’s made in (semi) bulk. So to do it completely one off would be ridiculous.

(Slade05) #107

* Dr. Halsey’s ONI security badge.

 • Embroidered SPARTAN-II patch.

This is downright sick.

(.Chris.) #108

I don’t think many people would buy such things for a new IP either.

Still think figures would be silly, there would just be of random un-named characters with no background to them other than you can play as them in Brink.

I’ll stick with Zelda, Metroid and Star Wars for collectables.

Somehow your more expensive example is better than the examples I provided (WoW and SPORE), that showed figurines at a lesser cost.

sorry, I’m not convinced for the simple reason that other companies already do it. If it was “so expensive” to the point of not being feasible, why do they continue to do it?

You keep treating this as only a one time thing, when I specifically said (more than once) that It could be offered as an overall service, NOT JUST FOR THE COLLECTORS EDITION, so regardless of how expensive it might cost to manufacture them, if sales still netted them a profit, who cares.

Also, read what Crytiqal said:

I’m not saying it’s impossible just impractical for a collectors edition. Your arguments rest on if it can be done, not why it should be done.

Vouchers = Ongoing concern on the part of Bethesda to honour them unless they hide a six month limitation in the fineprint.

Cost = The cost of making such an item would far outweigh the cost of other collectors edition goodies. Making the price very high or their profits very low. The latter defeating the whole point of making a collectors edition. And you’re really going to be fine paying $10-15 shipping on top of $200 for a collectors edition?

Appeal = Not everyone will be interested in owning such an item or going through the process of creating one. Those people may see less value in buying the collectors edition if the collectable is mostly something they don’t want and it’s represented by a voucher in the box.

Time/Logistics = Companies that make custom figures don’t deal in volume. If a Brink Collectors edition sold 50,000 and the company could crank out 100 a day (which IMO is grossly exaggerating that they could probably do) that’s a 500 day waiting list.

That said, I’m not knocking having this available as an after market service. Bethesda could license the assets and it could be advertised in the game boxes. I’m just saying to include it as a boxed in item doesn’t seem at all practical or attractive.

BTW - I’ll again state the thread is about collectors edition content and not game related content. If you’re leaning on the latter as a basis of your argument you can hardly fault others for correcting you.

(LyndonL) #111

I can’t see how it would be doable cheaply at all! If you’re wanting customised figures they will have to be cast and produced individually (costly) and hand painted (costly) since there wouldn’t be a mould as it’s a one of a kind item. Seriously… Look up how much it costs for one of a kind embroidery yet alone a solid model! One-ofs are never cheap.
There’s nothing stopping you once the SDK comes along from getting the models and getting someone to make you one yourself.

Still not convincing me.

I’m not suggesting this for me, I suggest it because I think the community would like it.

(SockDog) #113

@LyndonL The 3D printing tech can produce the models and colouring which would bypass need for custom moulds etc. It still seems very time consuming though and not something you could practically do without a company behind you that has invested in mass infrastructure to process large volumes.

I wouldn’t actually mind someone from SD or Bethesda confirming if there is actually a collectors edition being planned at all. Given the announcements of pre-order bonuses I’m kinda thinking no. To be honest I’m kinda sold on buying a key direct from SD and them putting something together themselves. Locki you know it makes sense along with that SD podcast.

(Offensive Person) #114

Ok, how about a fake ID in the CE’s?

(Icemonkeyjr) #115

I love game artwork and id be happy with a steelbook box and a art book

(SockDog) #116

How about id/card wallets? (might have been mentioned before).

(Offensive Person) #117

No, I didn’t mean Resistance of Security ID’s; I meant real fake ID’s.

(SockDog) #118

Yeah that’ll work.

(LyndonL) #119

Bahaha then the game will be classified PEGI 18

(brbrbr) #120
