But we were having fun spooky
Closed Beta Update V38182 (27th August 2014)
Why are people so upset compared to before? Aside from the bugs which will likely be corrected next patch the game still plays about the same :o. Maybe it’s just b/c I’m used to the poor performance more than others, but still am averaging 45% accuracy and weekend fragging is appeasing enough until some major changes roll in.
Mainly I am just frustrated by the overall direction the game seems to be going in terms of design.
Not just looking at what we have now but trying to work out where we are heading.
I am concerned with how SD are attempting to balance the game overall rather then balance the Merc as a whole.
I came here expecting a deep game with a high skill ceiling, hidden depth and long term prospects. Now it just feels like we are going to get a paint by numbers shooter that is dominated by LRLRLR+Crouch spam, where every weapon feels basically the same and an overall game with the depth of a puddle…
Feels like the fear of balance and upsetting people its really limiting the game.
I just really struggle to have “fun” now.
You answered your own question:
There aren’t any decent changes (in the eyes of the players) that are improving the game. There is still no clear direction for Dirty Bomb. Visibility is still absolutely dreadful!
Well I’ve been fairly consistent with my activity during the whole process of testing since the very start and the one thing I’ve found is that the majority of players involved have never been very consistent in their motivations or feedback. I’d say that the game has had a very slow progression for the most part, and people’s moody outbursts lost whatever influence we had to begin with. It took way too damn long to get past the ET/ETQW/RTCW clone nostalgia, which was an epic waste of time. I honestly found most people’s thinking on what made a game good boiled down to nothing more than whether or not they were good at it or used to be good at it. I’d be online one day with everyone saying the game was crap, then the next day they’d be owning up a pub and cheering “it’s just like ET/ETQW finally!” when literally nothing had actually changed.
The ‘excitement’ in the game hasn’t really changed for me at all- really the game feels mostly improved at this point, but what upsets me is that the changes feel insignificant considering its been over a year. I really didn’t care what kind of game SD wanted to make, but I just wanted to see that it was pushed to the full potential. I get excitement out of non-repetitive asymmetrical game play that empowers player skill and creativity- that’s my only agenda. The game just doesn’t push that, nor did it ever. Really up until this point people were mainly occupied with the raw skill part of the game, which I think has reached a sufficient enough place to move forward, or trying to approach every bad aspect of the game play with a classic ET solution. The problems are obvious to everyone without a doubt, but if SD doesn’t want to do the old stuff then f*k it, let’s try something completely new. We all put our 1k hours into whatever game that was anyway and I got over my ‘im old school dead game tournaments cuz I just got good or used to be,etc’ days long ago.
TLDR, the game get’s really boring if you play it too much and don’t struggle with the mechanics, not a big surprise. The reason I’d see this game ending up like a Brink is simply because it has the potential to do so many cool new things, but delivers them in a limited/unfulfilled fashion. I think I’ve been saying it for a while now, but I want to see all-in or nothing. Long term retention is a huge issue if moderately skilled fragging isn’t enough to keep you playing and that’s pretty much the only thing really being offered atm. I see the skeleton for a unique meta revolving around team work and personalized mercs, but there’s no sense of compliment amongst the game mechanics or any sense of full committal to these ideas. Sean is exactly on the spot, what is the vision for the game because I’m totally lost? Surely this isn’t the end point. My patch wish list is to just get on with it already because to me it’s felt like a year of tweaking without any significant forward progression in the game play.

That’s what I think, but I do think there’s a direction for the game that’s just not being taken. The downer is that I know a lot of people will never be happy with what that might be. Worst thing to happen for everyone is to release a half-baked game.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to INF3RN0 again.
once again say, that in order to keep ppl playing is to make game playable and enjoyable. remember, that we played this game a year.
in all (and i mean in all AND in each) the aspects of playability and enjoyment we see several tasks that are left unresolved. for as long as we play.
-
PERFONMANCE
1.1. fps drops.
1.2. micro freezes on player connect
1.3. mouse issues come up every second patch
1.4. hit registration -
MAPS.
2.1. still not a single map being 100% good.
2.2. some changes do good, while some changes on the same maps destroy it.
2.3. lots of changes are like: WTF??? i mean after literally 1 hour of playing on some changed map-parts i stuck with ‘why this even got into the build, total waste of time’ i will not, but i can recollect all examples. -
DIRECTION.
3.1. still dont understand, where this game goes. what is its core?
3.2. we have too much stuff going in and out. too much stuff that is not very important, because it is not the core of the game. so ppl get blinded by this insuffisiency. -
TIME.
with all the ruetes and dead ends, that this developement has made. nearly 2 years are gone, and we are still in the beginning. this does tell something, about what we can hope for and expect - a pretty long developement process with more routes and dead ends. some ppl didnt think this would be the way.

I skimmed through this but agree with it all…
The last few days people have been playing 8 v 8 spamfest servers… These maps are crazy small and TTK is crazy short. Mine, shotguns, snipers, tanks and much more are very frustrating…
The thing that got me last night was the lag. Lag you say haha yes… Was it server lag? Naa I dont think so it was player lag. A person had 300 ping on USA West and I would get dropped before I say him or try and shoot him and he would whip around and insta kill me while I only did 15% damage to him!
The Mouse Lag is the number 1 reason why I need to stop. I am shooting mid 40% and high 40’s with some guns yet I feel like I am shooting 10%… I can not snap to a person in this game nor can I seamlessly track a player…
I might re-install and go back to default cfg however people that have tweaked their cfg and really understand Unreal have a huge advantage…
After playing some rounds I have to say this:
Get rid of the ****ing concept of different killing stats. Every merc should be able to kill every merc. It should be down to skill who wins, not down to the merc.

Good luck with that haha!
This game will be unbalanced forever…
I dont think the enjoyment factor is predicated on being decent at the game… thats a bit of a high-school perspective imo.
Can list a myriad of games that I would say I’m pretty average at, yet none of those I can say I dislike.
Conversely I can name a number of games, I’m actually pretty decent in and they dont hold any interest.
Played DB somewhat casually through this entire process, and only now its starting to click a bit, and can see the potential.
Ironically its only when I stopped giving a crap about whether certain feedback would be addressed that I started enjoying the game.
+1
I still don’t like the idea that you put 5 headshots into someone and they turn around and kill you, and I still don’t like the small enclosed maps that feel like i’m being channelled through a level of Shinobi, but on the whole, the right idea’s there it just needs a fair bit of work
My number one issue from the previous patch was spawntimes/spawnlocation. The fine tuning and rubber band spawn thing doesnt seem to have made that much of a difference, other than I’ve found myself wondering why as the attacker i’m suddenly on a longer spawn…
anyone have an idea what one frame lag does now? seeem better with it on!!! wtf??
I keep it on- doesn’t seem to cause input lag like it used to, but it significantly boosts my frame rate when it’s on.
thanks inf3en0!! Its like the opposite of what i was told and now testing it i totally agree with u! so weird
