Call Of Duty: Anyone Tried It?

(ziege) #21

It’s an OK game, but I didn’t like the way everything was so very obviously scripted and full of triggers. Your teammates don’t really help beyond shooting badly, they never advance until you cross the invisible triggers. Everything is too predictable, it’s like this generations version of those old Lazersdisc games where you just do the right thing in the right order to let the scripting continue.

The driving missions were fun though.

I played until the end of the driving mission where you’re being handed panzers to take out the following jeeps, the truck pulls up and you have to jump on the big guns (flak cannons?) and take out the planes flying in before they drops bombs on your head. The problem was ppl on the roof of a building kept shooting me in the side while I’m on the gun, but if I jumped off the gun to take out those guys then the planes drop bombs and I still die. Teammates were useless at this point, just shooting randomly and missing everything. Got too annoyed with it and haven’t played since.

MP is same-old, mindless running & shooting, doesn’t compare to ET.

Worth buying I guess for a few days fun but nothing great.

LoL! I love that line… it’s really funny to me, because we’re talking about a World War 2 Game… and yes… WWII did actually happen, so how could it not be predictable?

I know what you meant though ziege  I’m just playing off words.

:drink: sucked huh? Heheh.

Tried to download the fucking SP demo “Dawnville” from two different sources. It loads up fine right to where the demo starts. I can look around, but if i try to move, it crashes my PC. WTF? I got a message about needing Directx 9.0 the first time I tried to run it, so I downloaded it off of MSN.com. Still no good. I’m sure as hell not gonna buy it if I can’t try it.

Does your video card support hardware T&L? If not, it acts weird or crashes. I found this out trying to play it on my laptop.

(schmeisser) #25

Excuse my ignorance, whats “hardware T & L”? My computer is a Pentium 3 with an ATI 64 meg video card, runs ET, Q3 and RTCW just fine. If COD uses the Q3 engine, shouldn’t it run? I can’t help thinkung the Directx 9.0 has something to do with it.

(SCDS_reyalP) #26

COD uses a very modified RTCW engine. It requires a much better video card to run than RTCW, ET, or Q3.

Hardware T&L = transform and lighting. That means gforce 1 or better. Which ATI card do you have ? Any radeon should be OK, any non radeon is most likely not.

(schmeisser) #27

It’s an ATI Radeon 64 meg, don’t know which version. I saw in the COD Readme that the game only runs on certain chipsets. How do I determine which ATI card I have?

(SCDS_reyalP) #28

somewhere in display properties it should tell you.

just about every card since tnt2 / riva128 seems to have hardware t&l to some extent.

Pooh, doesn’t look like they’re going to produce a Linux client for CoD so it doesn’t look like I’ve got any reason to buy it.

I’ll be blowed if I’m putting it on my gameservers too if I can’t play the flippin game.

Apparently they’re doing a Mac Client OSX client tho - gofig.

Once again, top marks to SplashDamage for the ET Linux client   :drink:

Should have said this earlier, but massive biggupp congratulations to Infinity Ward for their excellent work on COD.

We SD’ers were all well impressed with it although we squabble about which was the best bit.

For the time being, my personal fave fillet o’COD would have to be the “Defend The Bridge” bit in the British missions. Absolute chaos. Fantastic.

Shame the Bren gun ended up being so clunky. One day…

it is interesting to note that according to csports, cod seems to have peaked quickly, shot to #5 and is now slow steady decline in online players, while ET is still growing and holding on to #4

My .02 is that SP is the best SP FPS in the history of mankind, much like Max Payne 2 was the best SP 3PS ever. However, the MP is absolutely yawnworthy. I just can’t make myself like it, and I’ve tried. It’s just Q3A/SoF2 all over again. Run around and kill. I mean, ya if that’s what you’re after, then I would have to say it does it better than any other game, better than SoF2 even, which did that kinda game very well. But I’m spoiled after ET. I need a “reason to bother” now because of the awesomeness of ET and it’s objective-based play. Sure, ET has it’s stat whores, but the bottom line is, all the post-round bragging about your awards will ring empty if the flag next to your name doesn’t match the flag at the top of the screen, and that’s what it’s all about. The MP “objectives” in CoD are a joke. Since eliminating the other team ends a round, that’s all people bother trying to do, so it ends up being a TDM without respawns. As for DM, I swore to never play another DM match in any game ever in my life, because they are garbage. In SoF2 I played CTF because that’s the nearest thing to an objective, and in CoD I play TDM because at least I have teammates and can respawn. I only got RTCW after I’d found ET, for nostalgias sake, and I have to say that ET blows RTCW away, but at least RTCW had the right idea, and it beats every other game except ET. In ET I found what I’d always been looking for, but couldn’t find. It has it’s flaws, but it’s still utterly unrivalled among MP FPS enjoyability.

That russian campaign was exceptionally well made. Especially good were the first missions and the last mission at the reighsltag…tag…sag…something. It would’ve been cool if it also had a nazi campaign.

MP is pointless except for the fact that you can go around and look at the maps they made and get ideas about making your own maps. Anyone who hasn’t looked at that Tirpitz level is missing big.

(DieHard) #35

If you like to shoot like a more-brawn-than-brain dummy choose Max Payne 2

(Sick Boy) #36

If you like scripted events, flanking your enemy while your unit camps around and CS alike multiplayer, this is your game.

(@lewares) #37

There’s a patch you can download for that, but i think its only for the full version. The patch fixes some ATI problems.

(not_chicago) #38

It’s a good game, and extremely popular. Thousands of players every night. There are 3 teams - British, Russian, and American. Weapons balance between teems is is not great though, because the fire rates are realistic. This gives the Russians the best advantage, Americans next best, and Germans are outgunned. However, that’s the way it really was. Otherwise. it is a great game. I play it more than any other.

(Depth_Charge) #39

Wow last post before your’s on this one was December :open_mouth:

(next_ghost) #40

Yes, CoD is a great game but the ironsights have a bit strange implementation. I actually found it easier to finish the campaign on veteran skill (hardest) without ever using ironsights (except sniper zoom) than finishing it on hardened (second hardest) with using ironsights everywhere except point-blank range (where a real soldier wouldn’t even think of not using them :???:).

My favourite mission is the big house in Soviet campaign (after the sewers, u have to shoot snipers, clear it from cellar to rooftop and defend it until reinforcements arrive). Especially on the veteran skill where AI buddies die in 2 minutes and I’m on my own since then. Here’s how it looked on the end on veteran :D:
