Bye Bye ET :(

(Term) #1

Ah well ive finally gave up with ET n i just gotta accept it aint gonna work on my computer and the final straw was that when i clicked to play it, it restarted my computer, then when it finished restarting… important files were gone, some files for my firewall were gona so i couldnt get new virus updates and my whole pc crashed.

I’ve tried everythign and anything n the best thing i could do is buy a new graphics card, but my graphics card does the job form me and i aint bothered n i certainly aint buying a £100 graphics card to play a game

So basically this is bye from (RFC)Terminator.

I’d like to say a few byes to selected people i met in my few months of gaming on a kick ass first player shooter (when it managed to work)

The EQ squad - You guys are hilarious n i could hardly play from laughing when you were all on (and thanxs for the badgerbadgerbadger site. that made my day)

The ek. squad - Ty for let me play on your server it was one of the best 6 mappers i played on

Borehole a.k.a mr engineer - you were greta to play with n we had some great 1 on 1 fights

BlushingBride - a good laugh all the time n i enjoyed your company

lc gaming crew - you guys had a kick ass server n you were all really friendsly and fun

well nothin else to say but other than…bye

Sounds to me like you’re just in need of a full format and reinstall of Windows. M$ gets all cranky like an old woman after a year or so, for many reasons I won’t bore you with, but suffice it to say that I bet if you did a true format/reinstall, not just install Windows on top of itself, but actually wipe the drive clean and start over completely, once a year, you may solve your problem. I always have a seperate partition where I keep my .mp3’s which I also use to dump any important files prior to my yearly formatting; that partition is never touched so after reinstalling I can grab my files from it. I suggest you do the same, it makes formatting/reinstalling seem far less devastating when you can save all the little things like favorites and emails. Use Partition Magic to create partitions if DOS seems too daunting.

Anyway, good luck!

it’s a shame you cant play no more. Perhaps you could think about saving for some new computer stuff. You’ll want it for half life 2 and doom 3 anyway and i suspect we’ll all be playing Et for a long time to come so it wont be money wasted. Anyway i reckon most of us will still be here for a while yet so you wont miss too much. :drink:

before quitting ET, have you read this thread ?

(fattakin) #6

Yeah man - format c and reinstall XP or whatever - cures all known ills

If ya dont know how to get a mate to do it… u cant give up on ET that easy surely?

(pgh) #7

Yearly format? Harsh.

Best bet is every few months, like at least twice a year… its amazing the ammount of shit your PC picks up in say, 1 months use… let alone letting it build up for 12. Just create a partion on a HD with all your stuff and keep your OS on a partion so you only need to format that part…

(PH@TIE) #8

Format … re-install. Then once its running sweet, with ET. Ghost an image.

I re-install once or twice a year, just to clear the crap off my system.

(Bludd) #9

Well yeah, the truth is I used to reinstall like every month because I was always trying new OS’s, getting bored, trying something else, etc. I’ve changed OS’s 3 times in one day before, hehe. I used to do it just 'coz I liked that new OS feel. But since I built this box I can’t be bothered anymore, and I’ve only formatted once, so I guess I’ve finally settled in. I just didn’t want to scare the guy, LOL. Anyway, what I said is still true, once a year should be enough if you don’t really abuse your system too hard. I certainly won’t bother doing it anymore unless it’s necessary.

Hes dead guys. Dont try to revive him, let him r.i.p.

this windows 95?

XP runs and runs. For all that crap your PC “picks up”, try Add/Remove programs. Anything else, maybe antivirus, adaware and firewall.

(Stee) #12

I’ve had XP on this comp for 2 years and still not reformatted, no problems yet.

My XP is going good, although a while ago i had to put an old image on but since then it great again

:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Sad to see you go :frowning:

May the holy pai be with you, wherever you go :moo:

(V F) #15

pfft, you lie, you format every week

My install lasted pretty well, as last format was during world cup, then just last week due to hard drive starting to go out the door. I’ll need to look into that as scandisk and Norton picking up no bad blocks, drive might just need formatted as it was quite a while.

The once a year seems a bit much for XP. 95/98 Sure, that is more likely. ME, well, the answer to that virus is to wipe the system and get a different OS.
Personally, I’ve only had to do a reinstall once since I started running XP (which was slightly before the public release, I’m part of Microsoft’s OEM system builders program, so I get free goodies, sometimes early). And even that was just a standard over the top of itself reinstall. It may not have been necessary, but when your ability to do anything through your NIC goes out in the middle of a LAN party, and it takes more than a re-install of drivers, a Windows reload is faster than troubleshooting.
For the record, the damn thing would report a transmit failed on any NIC in the system (tried 3), when doing a ping.

Yes, I used to love arguing with my Linux friends who made fun of me for using XP. I had to set them straight about it; all those cliches about Windows that made them switch to Linux were only true on the 9x kernel, 2k/XP are just NT 5.0/5.1, and are stable as a rock.

(pgh) #18

Barely

(BondyBoy007) #19

Stable as a rock compared to the stability of 9x, when I first had XP it was running for weeks on end without a re-boot which, after years of the 9x kernel, was quite a pleasant suprise. But the only times that I’ve had to re-install XP was either when my HD died or I got a new motherboard - current install is only about 3 months old but it has not been switched off or re-booted for over a month (now if windows updates or norton updates didn’t require re-boots it would have never been re-booted  )

Plus I’ve only ever had one BSOD on XP since I switched over, and that was when I overclocked a bit too far

BondyBoy007, interesting Avatar you have in your clan profile, wonder were I’ve seen it before
