Bunny Hopping: Your thoughts?

What do you think about bunny hopping?
Not just for ET:QW, but all FPS games.

KEEP IT?

REMOVE IT?

well not all FPS games, but the ones that require it. I mean look at those FPS that use cover and not mindlessly pressing A and D and clicking the left mouse button and spacebar while you are at it.

Bunny hopping = BF Universe
Strafe jumping = id Universe

I hate it when people call it bunny hopping…

Anyway, I have yet to see any reasonable argument against strafe jumping besides “looks stupid” and “I can’t hit people”.

(jalisko) #4

mate, bunnyhopping comes from QuakeWorld. It’s even older than strafe running in the id universe.

(igl) #5

Bunny hopping is commonly mistaken for strafe-jumping but it is a different technique in which only the strafe keys are used (not the forward key). Bunny hopping is implemented in QuakeWorld, DeFRaG, Challenge ProMode Arena and in OSP mods for Quake III Arena, and also in Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life Mod Natural Selection, Warsow, Enemy Territory Fortress, Painkiller and Kingpin: Life of Crime. :nag: so where is my option for strafe jumping?

Another poll where people have different definitions…

http://velocity.lunarpages.com/trickjumping.html
“If you jump, and then right before you land, you hold down space bar, you will jump again immediately as you land. This is basically the bunny hop. The cool thing about the bunny hop is that if you do it right, you can build up speed with each hop. So for example, going down a big hill, if you bunny hop using CSJ all the way down the hill, you can build up some insane speeds. Some trickjumps require bunny hopping, usually just 2 hops. This is how the Oasis walljump is normally done.”

That’s the common definition of “bunny hopping” in ET.

Quake = strafe jumping…

A Quake without strafe jumping… well… isn’t Quake.

The close in fighting of the game should resemble ET:QW because of how the designers are controlling the action like in W:ET… but say you want to move quickly to another location… you should be able to strafe jump IMO and blaze your ass there.

(Wils) #10

igl’s definition of bunnyhop is the one I go by. To me, it’s a specific technique in games with specific air control. However, it’s possibly misnamed, since ‘bunnyhopping’ doesn’t even attempt to describe the combination of jumping and mouse movements.

(SCi-Fi) #11

All i bother abt is if there was a stamina bar that you could do a certain
amount of jumps or x amount of seconds to run with, soon as that bar
emptied you cant jump or run its as simple as that!!!

That for me would kill the bunny hop situation completely…

Bunny hopping to me really is what happens in the Battlefield games. When just hopping on the spot in hopes of avoiding gunfire while in a firefight instead of using good strafing motion and staying grounded is a viable tactic (which in Quake is certainly is not, W:ET as well)… then that is bunny hopping.

If you havn’t played 2142 and do not know what I mean… then you should check out the demo just to see how poor the movement in that game truly is combined with how shitty the different wepaons accuracy is makes bunny hopping at least some what effective.

It’s real bad in 2142, then again the speed your able to strafe in 2142 takes nut to mouth… I mean you cant even corner fight too effectivly in that game.

(Rahabib) #13

I think he is referring to jumping repeatedly, generally as a defensive mechanism to make it harder to score head shots.

In that case, the general W:ET of let them jump but drain the stamina bar works fine for me. Most games do this now. It allows you to jump but also penalizes those that do constantly.

(RosOne) #14

Ok, let’s go by those definitions and make another poll

(SKaREO) #15

Yea that’s the bunny hopping we’re talking about here. Strafe jumping, hook jumping, or circle jumping are just other names for it, but they all mean basically the same thing.

Here is the wikipedia page incase you still want more info about bunny hopping…

(space) #16

Righty, exactly… you can do this in 2142… it is really bad… well the game itself is just so bad… but this happens all the time in 2142… I have never really seen a game where it is such a viable tactic… jumping in most FPS as a defensive measure is a no-no…

But I think this is probably what most BF players fear when they hear bunny hopping.

BTW: I voted ‘I love it’ on the poll… and I do… but I think there is a big difference in bunny hopping in 2142, and that is probably what a lot of people are drawing conclusions from if they arn’t familiar with Q1-4 and W:ET and don’t know about the other skills that strafe jumping/bunny hopping/whatever can hold in a game with good physics that supports it properly.

The speed at which one can bunnyhop is effectively limited by the turning radius, if too sharp a turn is made at high speed, speed is lost. In the old versions of Counter-Strike, the degree to which a player can make sharp turns while bunnyhopping without losing speed is regulated by the sv_airaccelerate server value. This value could be set to 0 to disable bunnyhopping, and had a maximum effective value of 20.

It was easy to disable bunny hopping in Counter-Strike by changing a server variable. I think it can be useful and fun, but using a script to time the jumps is borderline cheating.

Bunny hopping / Strafe Jumping For The Win.
