Just like if everyone cuts off 1 foot then runs a race it’s fair.

(DarkangelUK) #742

Actually it’d be the opposite, everyone is already on the same level… adding m+kb support would be like giving some of the runners rollerblades.

(SockDog) #743

Roller Disco baby!

(darthmob) #744
@Darthmob, although you say accuracy is not the most important aspect of FPS, but then you go on to argue that it is???
Best explained with an example:
Fallout 3 is a great game but the controls are pretty bad. The movement and aiming feels sluggish. It doesn’t really matter because it is a SP game and the athmosphere and VATS system make up for it. It would never work for a MP game though. If a FPS is meant to be competitive (for me that is any game featuring player vs player multiplayer) the basic controls and mechanics need to be right. In that case flawed controls are worse than a bad story or bad graphics.

(H0RSE) #745

I wouldn’t exactly call Fallout 3 an FPS…more like a FPRPG.

(Reanimator) #746

…Also known as an RPS…

(H0RSE) #747

I don’t really see Fallout 3 as a Roleplaying Shooter, because the shooting blows. Without VATS, you can’t really hit shit. And VATS makes it slow and tedious, not fluid like shooters play out. Borderlands is more of a RPS. Fallout also had third person view, so I guess it would be a FP/TPRPG?

(Reanimator) #748

I think its a special exception for Fallout, but I wouldn’t really know considering I’ve only played the first two.

maybe, FP/TPRPGWSSE (First person or Third person role-playing game with some shooting elements.)

(tokamak) #749

Use Bioshock as a better example then, jeez.

(Reanimator) #750

or Half-life!

:magicpony:

(tokamak) #751

A better analogy would be; just like everyone doesn’t take doping then a race would be fair.
or Half-life!

:magicpony:
Did half-life have character development?

(Reanimator) #752

I usually think of a role-playing game as a game where you play a role or character, so character development isn’t the only thing in an rpg/rps that make’s it an rpg/rps. Although stat’s and things are usually analogous with the genre, it’s not the only thing that makes it so.

If Bioshock can be considered a RPS, so can Half-life, CoD has “character development” but no one calls it an RPS.

Ok… if you think I’m completely wrong/my point is invalid, how about… System shock 2 as a better example.

(tokamak) #753

Aw come on then Doom is a RPG as well. Even Pac-man is.

(BioSnark) #754

semantics arguments are always fun!..

on topic:

Can it be safely assumed that there will be achievements (steam/xbox) and trophies (ps3) in this game? Good. I think it would be nice to have some aimed at encouraging more vanilla-minded players to play custom content such as for playing a mod or five custom maps or similar.

Also, I’d love having a classic game type like ctf or tdm pre-made in the SDK/editor for custom mappers to run with… maybe even a vehicle base for modders.

(Reanimator) #755

I meant a game that is story-driven.

(abnorm) #756

whats about to improve the spectator stuff for players and specs?

It would be really nice to spec more then 1 player at the same time. I talk about a splitscreen mode where you can spec your whole team in one view.

that would be a great innovation for players and spectators at brinkTV. imho :armadillochase:

(.Chris.) #757

Yeah that be great, would make shoutcasting easier and more interesting also, not sure how it would work though cause you would effectively be rendering the gameworld as many times as the amount of players you are watching which would be pretty bad I guess.

Keep that for BRINKpro :stuck_out_tongue:
IMO the engine might not calculate twice a thing who is set on multiple view (let’s just say that if you have 2 view looking at the same thing, it will be faster than 2 view looking opposite ways).

I don’t think having 8 views at the same time is a good idea, 2 views might be enough if they put a list for quick switch between players. (ex: A list like the fireteam menu but when you pick a player, you are switched to his view, without having to go on limbo).

I like that, but it would require more bandwith, especially if you’re watching two characters far away from each other.

I’d point you to the XBL rankings on this forum. Some of us here at SD just might need a little help with our G addiction.

Rahdo also has a good interview on XBox360Achievements.org that talks more specifics.
