BRINK suggestions forum

Right, i checked the defs and it were the lightningpistol and machine pistol that had 1.05 speed modifier. Knives nades pistols have 1.1.

(tokamak) #482

Right. Never thrust a developper.

Suggestions:

Beta
Through steam please. Easy distribution, update pushing and I expect an abundant amount of usage statistics. Might as well test the front end integration too while you’re beta-ing.

Post release support
Do a Valve and let the PC gamers hammer the game to shreds, incrementally patch and then consolidate patches on the consoles in your first DLC. I love SDs support of their games but wish we’d see lots of small hotfixes rolled out asap rather than rolling them into a big update. If you take on Steam for PC I hope this is a possibility.

(murka) #484

I do hope you mean steam as an option and not compulsory.

(SockDog) #485

If they go with Steamworks for the backend I think it’s going to be compulsory to use Steam. Anyone know any different? With regards to just the beta though, well IMO it’d make sense to test the entire package including friends system, match making etc which I’d expect would run at least partially via Steamworks.

(maggol) #486

Or like Epic games with their UT3? It can run without steam being activated and can install patch without steam, but if you have steam you can use it to update your game or use it’s server browser to find server or friend

(SockDog) #487

Interesting. It would of course be preferable for the Steam-a-phobics out there if they did have a choice. Did they have two backends in UT3 then or just silently used Steam’s?

I sort of got the impression that SD would use something like Steam to offload the need to code chunks of stuff that Steam/Live/PSN would handle perfectly well. Then again I know nothing of what I’m talking about so I guess we’ll wait a little longer for them to figure the stuff out.

Being purely selfish though I’d like to see the entire PC platform forced onto it one backend so that things like friends and invites can exist outside the game.

I know this isn’t really a discussion thread but anyone have thoughts on SD adopting a more Valve like approach to patching quick and fast rather than the long consolidated and patch approval patches?

Not a Steam fan, no objections to the social aspect of it, but compulsary use is a game breaker for me. I won’t use it

I think having a cohesive experience across many games is crucial in making PC gaming attractive console gamers. Steam seems best positioned to pull that off despite MS starting to wake up to their ignorance of the platform for years.

Not meaning to lead this way off topic but is it the DRM present in Steam that turns you off or something else?

(Nail) #490

As I play mostly LAN, it serves no purpose for me. Relying on third party companies with no investment in the games I play is objectionable and their reliance on cloud systems has proven to be a mistake imo.

back on topic, Brink suggestions… Don’t use Steam as primary distribution.

Benefits of using Steam compulsory:

 • smaller updates and fixes can be easily installed
 • everybody is running the same version
 • the Steam overlay and friends / chats / groups functions are nice

The downside of using Steam:

 • it’s slow and feels bloated. I often sit in front of my computer thinking “COME ON WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG?!” when I have to start Steam or a game on it. It’s so frustrating to use.
 • the general download speed of games is often very slow. I wouldn’t want to download a 500mb patch over Steam but then this might not be necessary with multiple smaller patches.
 • it would suck when wanting to play the game on smaller lan parties. Not everybody owns the game and having Steam compulsory would make it impossible to play. I really liked the way you could play ETQW on lan without having to enter a serial. Of course Brink relies more on the SP experience as well but I hope we will still see some way to play over lan with just one copy of the game.
 • no chance for a linux client

(Salteh) #492

Batman: Arkham Asylum can run without having steam active too, but I’m not sure that’s how it is supposed to work.
(that is the only way my computer will actually run the game though, so I don’t mind :))

(SockDog) #493

I agree and hope SD continue with the Lan support and shun the foolish idea that Lan’s are dens of piracy or something.

I do wish Valve did more with Steam, they seem very slow to fix or improve things on the platform and that’s probably my biggest criticism of it. Can’t say I’ve been bothered by its speed (loading, interface), seems fine to me. Downloads I just leave to run overnight or while I’m at work. I’ve recently reinstalled and probably pulled 30 gigs of games that wouldn’t install from backup in just a few evenings.

(engiebenjy) #494

I am impressed with steam, i got both l4d2 and mw2 via steam and preloaded them without issue. But the best thing for me has to be the friends functionality

(BioSnark) #495

That’s not the issue. The issue is that LAN support often means hamachi network support.

(darthmob) #496
That’s not the issue. The issue is that LAN support often means hamachi network support.
The thing is that there is no real measure against piracy.
It may be true that lan support means a game can be played over hamachi online. If there is no lan support people will play online on cracked servers or just singleplayer.

In my opinion not having a proper lan mode does not result in less piracy or more sales (which often seems to be seen as the same thing).

(tokamak) #497

Another small suggestion. Some shooters have guns that start sounding differently when your clip is out of bullets, the last ten bullets or so start to ‘rattle’ a bit. It’s a very subtle and intuitive indicator that you’re going to have to reload soon.

(H0RSE) #498

implement some features from the ET games, like options for auto switch weapons, and auto reload. Also, have an option for hit sound indicators. Option to choose left handed or right handed, to decide where your gun is displayed. NO MELEE WEAPONS! (unless they are class specific) lets not bring a knife to a gunfight. And make these options available on all platforms.

(tokamak) #499

H0RSe, the main melee weapon will be a gun butt. Knife won’t be class specific but weapon specific (IE you get one if you take a pistol as some kind of load out).

The entire melee system won’t be similar to other shooters anyway so it’s best to reserve our opinion on it until more info is released.

I wasn’t trying to argue any side, just clarifying what some of the game industry has against LAN support.

A fair portion of my multiplayer gaming has been over LANs and I consider it a feature when developers respect their paying customers enough to include it despite the cost. I wouldn’t say it’s worth it to them, however.
