I always hated melee weapons in FPS games. It is a “First Person SHOOTER,” not a “First Person Shooter, and if you’re close enough, melee.”

The only melee attack should be with the gun itself, unless a specific class has melee attacks incorporated into its build. It’s fast paced action, I don’t (and shouldn’t) have to worry about being in a firefight, and having a third guy come up and knife me.

I’m sure the operative/stealth class will have a disguise and backstab ability, but other than situations like tat, melee should be strictly with the weapon in hand. If you wan’t to play stealthy knife guy, go play D&D and roll a rogue.
If youre playing in an 8v8 game - then you’re going to have to worry about, or I should say -’ be aware’ of what other guys are going to try and do to you, while youre in a firefight with one guy. The method in which they choose to kill you really is irrelevant I think because the word ‘Shooter’ to describe a game… shouldnt be taken literally

If im in a firefight, and I get taken out by a gun or grenade or something similar, that is ok and expected, but to add in melee weapons, a method that makes no sound, and cannot be detected, not to mention it slows down the pace of the game, is just asinine. Just because it 'adds a ‘new dimension’ doesn’t mean it has to be in the game. Dual wielding chainguns would add a new dimension, and would stick with the theme more than melee weapons do.

And no, it is not humiliating to be killed by a guy with a knife while I’m in a fight, since melee kills, unlike most weapons, are one shot kills, make no sound, and I was in a fight to begin with. If there is melee, let it be class specific, otherwise, just use the butt of the gun.

(tokamak) #463

Isn’t the difference between a butt of a gun and a stab of a knife purely cosmetic though?

(H0RSE) #464

no, gun butts don’t kill you in one hit, and are really used as a last effort, rather than a melee weapon that is usually a one hit kill, and is used as a main source of attack a lot of time. Maybe I’m just oldschool, but I miss the days when shooters consisted of just that…shooting, with melee either being entirely situational and rarely used, or no melee to speak of.

(Nail) #465

What FPS hasn’t had a knife ?

(tokamak) #466

SD has still promised to have a somewhat different melee system this time though (although you can see in the demo that a guy gets instantly knocked over by a butt of a gun).

You say knife should be reserved to a class, which is what Quake Wars somewhat had. All classes had a knife but only the covert ops classes could insta kill with backstabs. Radho already hinted at a knife being able to used in combination with a handgun. This means that again there is some kind of limitation (maybe a special talent, maybe a weapon loadout etc).

Again, I agree with you that just the one hit knife kills like in COD aren’t good, but damn it feels good emptying your uzi on a Strogg and while he giggles at you being out of ammo, slash his last bit of stroyent away with your quickly drawn knife.

Some games I can think of are Tribes, NOLF, MOH, RTCW, W:ET (except for covert op). I don’t thin they had melee weapons. Also, I believe COD 1-3 didn’t have a knife. these are just off the top of my head. Also, a lot of FPS games have melee weapons like Quake 3, UT, DOOM, Duke Nukem, Half Life, Serious Sam, etc, they aren’t necessarily knives, and they weren’t very practical to use, whereas melee weapons in games today seem to be just as viable as using a shotgun.

I used to play RTCW, W:ET, and QW, A LOT. Especially RTCW and ET, I am a seasoned medic and I know how the covert-op can get backstab kills, and that’s cool. It is part of his class, not a skill or attack that anyone can do or have.

I think FPS games should stick to the expression, “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.”

(Nail) #468

Both RTCW and W:ET have knives, weapon slot 1 for all players

(H0RSE) #469

but when do people actually use them? I never did

and when i say never i mean I NEVER once used the knife, other than for covert-op, or in single player. That’s why I listed it above, because I never used it, and forgot there actually was a knife in the game. I binded weapon slot 1 to my pistol.

You never gib? Cause it’s really important afaik…

(H0RSE) #471

I used grenades to gib, or bullets to force respawn.

(Nail) #472

terrible waste of resources imo

(H0RSE) #473

I played a medic. I didn’t really shoot at enemies. I either stayed with groups, dropping medkits and reviving, letting them do the fighting, or I ran throughout the map, helping those who needed it. I played Medic to help others, not so I could keep myself alive and charge in. If I did play on the offensive, I was rarely alone, and didn’t bother knifing a body, because someone already took care of it. Between finding guns off corpses, and ammo drops, I was fine as far as ‘resources’ were concerned.

It instantly gibbed downed enemies and backstabs were quite satisfying as well.

I didn’t like it at all in ETQW though. The damage output was pathetic (you could poke someone for 10 seconds in the back and he wouldn’t even realise it), it didn’t work for gibs and I almost never played Covops so I missed the backstab. It’s not such a special ability to be granted to one class only in my opinion.

And what Nail meant is that using grenades to gib someone is a waste. You only have a handful of them so use them for doing real damage.

(Ragoo) #475

I used knife very often in ET:QW for fast running :stuck_out_tongue: And I liked it (:

(tokamak) #476

The gun is as fast as the knife in QW.

I usually use it when my machinepistol runs out and there’s only a few hp left on the target.

(.Chris.) #477

No it’s not…

(tokamak) #478

The pistol and knife are just as fast. So it’s pointless to run around with a knife other than melancholic value.

(murka) #479

Pistol is 1.05 speed multiplier, knife is 1.10, AR/Lacerator is 1.0, rest i forgot.
