BRINK suggestions forum

(Ragoo) #341

Some little suggestions:

1.) Taken from the Battle-net, they pretty much do what you want to do about showing what a badass your character is. They give you profile pictures every time you won 20/150/… times with a certain race. But they also have that for the amount of tournament wins you have. So I figured it would be really cool if you could give out medals or unique cloth or tatoos to players that win/take part in a big tournament so they can customize their characters with it (:

2.) Something I have seen quite a few times now (for example in Quake Live, Warcraft 3 or Starcraft 2) is an info box in spec mode. I would really like to see that for BRINK. Some small box that in some corner that can provide the spec (or the BRINKTV viewer :P) with information such as kills, deaths, k/d, accuracy, hitpoints healed, objectives done,… It should be fully customizable so that the spec can choose which information he would like to have
Maybe also something at the bottom that shows how many hitpoints a player has, which weapon he has and which class/body type he is. Something like that is used in Counterstrike so you as a viewer can have a better overview. In first-person spec mode you can only see what one person is doing and eventhough free cam helps out quite a bit , I think my suggestions would help even more so you don’t lose track of what is going on on the whole battlefield and how the teams are playing tactical wise.

3.) If you aim for 50:50 chance to win for attackers/defenders on maps I would suggest you set different spawn times in Stopwatch mode because you would want attackers to have an advantage in Stopwatch because otherwise it will be a draw way to often and no one likes draws because Stopwatch is about which team is the better one
But perhaps you already did that in your previous games and I didn’t realize because I never played Stopwatch

With respect to stopwatch: That mode has been decidedly attacker biased ever since ET1. Too easy and the map becomes labelled “lotto”, too hard and it becomes “double full hold”. The needs of stopwatch mode are far different from campaign mode…SD has heard an earful from us mapmakers/modders/script hackers about stopwatch mode over the years…

man, i really need to play this shattered horizons, but it doesn’t run on XP, right? curses!

(Nail) #344

no XP, requires DX10

(Ashog) #345

SD please do not forget as full demo support as possible with at least as many tweaks as in ETQW.

I would like to know if the server option will allow host to enable/disable “friendly fire”. Also, how will SD handle team killer?(Automatically get ban after 3 kill?) In addition, will there be host option to ban player or vote mechanism? This question is for both PC and Consoles.

Thanks,
zXSwordXz

(Rahdo) #347

One of the server options will definitely be friendly fire (which will be off in a standard match). As for handling jerks when FF is on, I’d like to hear what you guys think? What are some pitfalls to avoid (since ban voting can be used against innocent players as well…)

(tokamak) #348

It’s really easy. A big xp cost is all you need, intentional or unintentional should be valued the same (unlike QW where you can file a complaint if tk’d). In SH the penalty for a team kill is akin to the worth of making 4 kills. That’s big especially because that flat score is the only thing that is valued in that game.

This kind of severe penalties won’t ban/kick anyone, it will just be way too expensive to do it especially because the penalties are permanent costs and there’s no clean slate an another match. You’re also sending a clear message as a game that your teamplayers are very valuable and should be treated with respect (IE, chucking a nade into a group of 3 enemies and 1 friendly killing them all is not rewarded).

For real grievers there’s always the vote regardless of what exactly they do.

tokamak, you have to keep in mind though that teamkills are a legit action for medics. I wouldn’t waste medpacks on a low health teammate but shoot him down and quickly revive. At least if it will be the most efficient way to get him up to a normal level of health again like it was in ET / ETQW.

Regarding teamkill punishment I found the complaint system of ET / ETQW not that useful. I always disabled the complaint popups because most teamkills were accidental. If there was a griefer (in about 1 of 30 games or so I would guess) a kickvote was the best way to get rid of him. I have seen similar systems on Call of Duty servers where you have to type something in chat to forgive your teamkiller which is tiresome and unnecessary.

An improvement of the complaint popup system would be to not ask the player if he wants to file a complaint but to do nothing as a default action. It should then be possible to file a complaint in a timespan of 30 seconds or so (in an extra menu for example). An automatic ban would happen after x complaints have been filed for the teamkiller in that match. It would mean that you needn’t always press F2 or NO after you have been accidentally teamkilled and you could still file a complaint in case you met someone who is taking it a step too far.

XP can have dx10 too…

sorry for OT.

(Dormamu) #351

+1
great idea

(DarkangelUK) #352

Bleeders are a big issue as well. They know fine well a TK will get them a complaint, so they bleed the players health to close to 0 so he’ll die very easily. Suppose one option would be to cause self damage if you shoot a team mate, but again accidents happen and innocent players will be punished for this.

(tokamak) #353

That’s something that should be taken out of the game as a whole.

i have one pretty simple suggestion. i remember posting the same suggestion for quakewars on doom3world.org before it was released.

its kinda like this.

when you play through the campaign:

we have team A and team B playing map X.

team A wins map X -> next map Y (result: different part of the story)
team B wins map X -> next map Z (result: different part of the story)

this would make the campaign/story a bit more dynamic and unpredictable. the number of maps would increase exponential tough.

level structure of the campaign:

                        /
                / -3a
           -2a
         / \ -3b
level 1 ----and so forth...
         \ / -3c
           -2b
                \ -3d
                        \

does anyone understand what i mean?

(Rahdo) #355

Actually, at the moment, we’ve got the game balanced such that when a medic heals a teammate, it’s for 100% health…

(timestart) #356

So how does healing work? Dropping health packs for players to pick up or through interacting with the player? I’m assuming it’s the latter but if so can players heal themselves?

@tokamak: what have you got against teamkill-revives?

(tokamak) #357

A: It looks stupid
B: It’s the biggest immersion breaker in the game so far. What kind of doctor finishes off his patient with a shotgun and then takes his defibs out?
C: You’re interrupting a player in whatever he’s doing at the moment.

(Smooth) #358

I never liked the medic-teamkill mechanic either. I understand why it was the better option in ET and QW, but I think tokamak is spot on.

With the mechanics we have, TKs will not be something helpful in BRINK :stuck_out_tongue:

(zXSwordXz) #359

It very hard to come up with a fair system to handle TK. Punish them with XP won’t do it because it can always be earn back. An lets face it, there are always some jerk who don’t feel like playing or can get kill but want to just kill this team because it is very easy. Also, Host can abuse their power if they have the ability to kick players. Voting system might be fair in someway but it is very disrupting to constantly have to keep voting because some kid doesn’t like a player or think he/she is cheating.

Here is a crazy idea but I don’t know if it is remotely possible because it will involve in game stats gathering. If a player A kill by player B more than 3 or 5 times. Give player A the option to Ban player B. This way the TK is at the mercy of the player he kill. I’m sure player A will know if it is accidental or not.

(10chankc2) #360

Brink could try the ricocheting bullets in call of duty hardcore where players take damage when they shoot at their team mates
