BRINK suggestions forum
Neither myself nor any of my LAN mates will buy any game that requires Steam to play
There’s a difference between a steam requirement and steam support.

(Nail) #282

yes, that’s why I qualified it with “requires”

(tokamak) #283

Why would you need steam support? All your ‘progress’ in QW has been saved online as well.
Why would you need steam support? All your ‘progress’ in QW has been saved online as well.
I don’t need steam support. But it has been said that the game may be available on steam. All I’m saying is that if you go steam, it would be great to do it properly.

Good things that steam offers if it is done the right way:

 • a friend invite / chat system that works even when the game is not running
 • savegames / config files can be stored online and don’t get lost when your computer dies / you reinstall

If I can have a boxed version of Brink and use it with those steam advantages as well I’m a happy man. If there’s additional linux support I’ll cry with joy.

PS: A negative example would be CoD World at War. It works with steam but you can’t invite players to your game, other players can not see where you are playing and it doesn’t save your progress even though it always downloads profile data when you start the game.

I do wish Valve would fix the Steam Cloud to actually save “config files”
Rather than just default key binds
Always after reinstalling custom scripts disapear, at least for me anyway
So I just resort to autoexec copy-pasting

(RR2DO2) #286

You don’t want to save config files in the cloud as config files are machine-specific. This is why in ETQW we split the configs in two pairs, one with bindings and one with settings. Any custom scripts that you have should do the same.

(DarkangelUK) #287

Is Brink gonna follow suit with ET:QW and save configs, demos, screenshots in a separate location from the game install by default?

(tokamak) #288

I think that’s likely if they keep using Idtech (it’s pretty much standard isn’t it?)

(Floris) #289

But there are plenty of settings which are not machine-specific, and those would probably not need a restart, so they could feasibly be downloaded from a web service at game runtime, right?

Talking about all this “cloud” stuff brings me to a question. ET:QW has a great buddy system, powered by DaemonWare right? Did SplashDamage rewrite all that stuff for BRINK, as DaemonWare got acquired by Activision?

(jRAD) #290

That’s required to run properly on Vista/7 or on limited-access user accounts on XP.

Writing to Program Files ist verboten.

Quick suggestion from SH again: That game features endurance. Every game you complete increases your endurance, the endurance is a factor that multiplies your overall score (and in that way the xp you get).

So after completing one match you get 10% more xp, second match 20% more xp, etc etc (percentages are pure for illustrative purpose).

This to encourage people to stay in one campaign together (and I suspect it was also done to avoid rage-quiting). People leaving and joining are really detrimental to the overall team balance and fun.

(Rahdo) #292

that’s a fantastic idea. me likee

Quite a good idea. Up until the point where you need people to join mid campaign. People not only need to leave because they are bored, getting pwned or not encouraged enough but also because of RL matters. So people would still leave mid-campaign.
So imo it is a good idea. But must not reward the guys already in the game too much, or else people would leave (for rl reasons) and nobody would rejoin because they would lack the endurance bonus. So such a system would have the potential of screwing up balance and server numbers even more. It either needs to be done perfectly right or just left out.

(tokamak) #294

No that would not happen for the simple fact that endurance isn’t an actual in-game advantage (you’re not stronger than anyone else). Endurance is only saying ‘look if you want to level up more efficiently, then play longer sessions in one server’.

I think your confusion lies with picturing Quake Wars. Quake Wars resets all your advancements at least each hour while in Brink you’re advancing a character as if you would in a MMORPG. So there’s always incentive to join if you want to build up a character, from there on endurance only adds incentive to stay where you are and keep playing.

I personally think it’s a good thing to just join a server where players have a high endurance, that means they’ve been playing for long and probably aren’t going anywhere for they would lose their build up. It’s nice to know you’ve entered a stable server then.

Hmm, yes I get what you mean now. As in people would get this “endurance boost” and keep it even if the campaign resets? I see.

Yeah that wouldn’t cause problems but it still needs to be a significant yet not too large. As in for each round the Endurance boost would be increased by 5% per round (given that each lasts about 20 minutes) and the boost would be capped at 15-20%. You don’t want the value to be too little that it would just be insignificant. But you still don’t want to make it too much or worse even with a very high cap that you would encourage people to just grind that XP or worse to afk-spec on a server to keep their endurance boost.

(tokamak) #296

Sure the value is indeed totally dependant on how much you value people staying to play.Yet perverse consequences like ‘grinding’ and ‘afking’ need to be dealt with in their own way. Going afk for a large part of a match should actually reduce your endurance.

(RoryGreen) #297

That endurance idea is really good. In other games when I join a server, people often leave because their team is losing or something. I like the idea that it will keep people in a certain server for longer. Obviously as Brandmon said, the bonus shouldn’t be too big but good idea, I would like to see that in the game.

Tokamak for president! Yes, he can. 'nuff said.

(DoubleDigit) #299

If anybody took some time to play with the video editor from GTA IV, you can do pretty amazing stuff with it.

I know time is short, but maybe with the second patch or so…

And yes, someone already mentioned, make the game autorecord while you play and ask you if you want to keep the recording at the end of the game.

(tokamak) #300

Yes and give the records proper names. Only having numbers is a terrible thing to browse through your recordings.
