Brink Q&A

(tokamak) #1041

Yeah you’re definitely not the only one.

Perhaps a manual mode allows you to have more variation in your movement, while Smart is a bit more linearly automated. Like if I look at something that I want to get to, I can hold the button the whole time, as opposed to say tapping it to grab a ledge. I am thinking that the smart button might be used more like an environmental interactive action key, rather than the complete system of movement. Still looking forward to hearing more about this though; would be cool if the game had a similar movement system as ET or QW 1.5 in combination with the smart system.

(Rahdo) #1043

Manually doing smart-button moves basically just means you’re hitting crouch or jump yourself at the right time. for instance, if you want to climb up a wall, you can run at it with the smart button held, and you’ll automatically scramble up and over it. but alternately you can run at it, hit the jump key and HOLD it, and you’ll scramble up and over it as long as you keep jump held down (release jump and the climb stops).

the speed up comes from the fact that in the example mentioned above, if you relied on the smart button, nothing would happen until you get to the wall, and only then would you start climbing. in the manual jump example, because you chose to jump early, it gave you a little bit of extra height, which means you didn’t have to climb as far (smart meant you started climbing from the ground, jump meant you started climbing from the air). it’s not a huge difference, and in some cases, it’s no difference at all. in really has the most impact when a well timed jump changes what would have been a a mantle (slower climb) into a vault (smoother handplanted throw yourself over an obstacle move).

(tokamak) #1044

Are there also consequences to timing your moves wrong? In Mirror’s Edge you can slip and glide back which slows you down tremendously if you don’t time things well.

(light_sh4v0r) #1045

Mirrors Edge was the first game I played where you could actually fall on your back for timing the moves wrong. It was pretty funny there, but I don’t think it’s suitable for multiplayer gaming.

(tokamak) #1046

Yeah that would be a bit over the top. What I mean is when you lose momentum if you didn’t jump at the right time after you grabbed a ledge.

And I would definitely love to see those wall jumps in a Brink 2

(Rahdo) #1047

i’ve never timed it, but i think you don’t end up with any sort of penalty for missed, since jumping speed and sprinting speed are the same to begin with. i could be wrong about that though. if there is an inefficiency there, it’s really really minor

(Lequis) #1048

Is there a jump block in Brink? because usually games do that to avoid bunny hopping, but sometimes you actually fail the jump and need to do it again because someone is shooting at you.

(Senethro) #1049

Missed fiddly jumps were usually the result of bullet pushback messing you up. With bullet pushback removed (which Rahdo said today somewhere) your jumps would fail less. Using the SMART button would give you an automatic success as well, so hopefully the whole situation just wouldn’t happen.

IMO you should always turn and shoot the guy anyway but thats the way I see it.

(H0RSE) #1050

It would be REALLY cool if SMART was an option that could be disabled, thus freeing up the button for something else.

(Senethro) #1051

I don’t think you can disable it but couldn’t you just not assign it to a button? Whats the difference?

(dohfOs) #1052

it is an option that can be disabled isn’t it? at i thought so… or well, at least you can do the same features that smart does on your own (i.e. without using smart). or you could just not have smart assigned to any button? but that’s maybe not exactly what u meant?

edit: oh, missed Senethro’s post. nvm -.-

(spazski) #1053

Any possibility of highly customizable control schemes for consoles?

(darthmob) #1054
Any possibility of highly customizable control schemes for consoles?
I’m pretty sure that has been confirmed.

(tokamak) #1055

Another Q: In the brink teaser you hear at one point a yell “Civilians on the battlefield” could you guy specify on that? It’s something in the teaser after all. Is that the medic escort mission?

(hellspawn7) #1056

What’s the level cap?

(Lequis) #1057

Customizable control schemes, but no jump-/drop-shotting ;(

How low is the crouch?

(brbrbr) #1058

and/or skinnable UI ?
whith ability to extend both L&F and functionality by customers/fans-made plug-ins ?

(shibbyuk) #1059

OR… when the game is in Beta? Remind us how we register interest again?

It’s good to hear teamwork is being encouraged more so than in QW, my only worry is whether communication will be good enough (particularly with VOIP off by default). There needs to be a very easy yet comprehensive ‘vsay’ system imho. The sort of messages we might all set up binds for in comp play…

(light_sh4v0r) #1060

lol, how can they answer this? 60 cm? xD
