Brink Q&A

(tokamak) #321
There are several different accuracy states based on your current movement state. Crouching does indeed improve accuracy, as does standing still. SMART moves tend to kick up inaccuracy, though some weapons feel more penalty than others (i.e. assault rifles are really rather accurate while slow. Pistols don’t have great accuracy at the best of times, but they don’t really lose much accuracy while you’re sprinting around - excellent for closing on enemies).
Will spread change instantly for stances or will it take a short while (maybe even dependant on weapon, I can imagine a pistol to stabilize faster than a machine gun)?

Obviously both ways have their pros and cons, but which direction will Brink be taking?

There is some tweening over time in Brink.

(Nail) #323

“Can BRINK have this requirement, 2 Ghz proc, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB Vram( FX5700 and radeon 9600
supported) and can play it at 30-40 FPS?”

You’d be hard pressed to find a supported commercial O/S that will run on that, let alone a modern game.

(Shiv) #324

You need to login to steam every 30 days for some reason otherwise off line mode fails.
thats my experience anyway!

Mmm. I only recently put steam on my laptop and run it offline. I’ll give this a try and see if it fails in a few weeks.
Minimum specs these days is atleast a dual core and 1gb of ram, maybe you’ll get it running with it looking like Mario, but seems to shame to make such a game look so bad.

Guess I can’t really compare, but the name is the same but the tech was created independantly with no collaboration… guess virtual texturing was a cool name all round :)
No, if SD can optimize the game to run so well at that spec. With wider range of system, SD will have a lot of, what do you call it? Ah, customers or fans. Even CS:Source cor Half-Life 2 can run beautifully at that spec.

Edit:
I have dual core system with 2 GB ram and 256 MB video card just for info. But, i love a game with low requirement. So, the internet cafe near my house can run it (as you know i have a slow internet connection)

(DarkangelUK) #327

The source engine is an older engine than idtech4 and always had lower system requirements, and I think at this point they’re pushing the engine as far as they can, not holding it back. The 9600 is from the 2002 era, I think it’s maybe a bit much asking a 7 year old card to support a brand new game when, as Nail said, that system would struggle with the latest OS.

(dohfOs) #328

Hello all! As some of ou might know Richard Ham took his time and replied on numerous of questions (W:ET/RtCW/ET:QW-mainly). I took the time to summarize the whole thing into a gigantic Q&A with answers perhaps more leaned towards the competitive scene rather then the general public (which imo makes the thing even more interesting).

Head over and read it @ doffelicious.com

And yeah, the page is not in english, but the Q&A is, and if you want to make the whole thing English, press the UK-flag in the top right corner for some über Google-translation

Right, the whole interview appeared to be one big lobby session to get iron sights out of the game.

Q: Don’t put iron-sights in it and also don’t make shoot-while-running an upgrade but a permanent feature. Believe us ET players! (Although Brink won’t be ET, we know at least what makes a game outstanding. And I bet you don’t want to create yet another CS / CoD / whatever clone.)

Q: In my eyes ironsight could be a nice extra, but just an extra! to shoot more accurate from longer distances, just like a sniper but then without zoom but let’s say a fov around 65-70.

Screw that! The ironsights where a huge improvement in ET! Actually having to think about your spread and pose adds a whole new dimension to the game. That’s not ‘just a bonus’.

Q: Logically it only really makes sense to go for the ironsight, because otherwise (in other games previously anyway) spread seems to be too much of an issue, and you’ll find yourself dead if you dont. Going to try and address this in Brink?

Q: I would really like for you to explain why you think ironsight makes a game more fun to play. What does that add to a game that makes the gameplay (read enjoyment of a game) go up.

Okay that’s enough! ENOUGH! QW was FINE in this aspect!

Q: What I mean is; why dont you go on with the RtCW/W:ET-gameplay and movement stuff. RtCW was very successful with its 1on1 game gameplay and movement. why dont you instead of copying cod games copy this style again? Fast obj based gameplay IS NOT possible with ironsight and all this stuff.

:eek::eek::eek:

As for the rest, it had some proper questions as well, learned some new stuff.

“Surfing”???

Are we to take this clue literally? Or are you suggesting that mid-battle, our characters can stop and take a moment to Google a Cumberland Pie recipe for tea?

I’m guessing you might mean the sort of “surfing” in CS Source?

(Senyin) #331

Can you explain to me what “the sort of “surfing” in CS Source” is?
Because that surfing remark stuck with me too.

I highly doubt the heavy type is able to buy a landsurfer, the image I got
when I read it

(Shiv) #332

Some stuff i found interesting

“some levels are 100% indoors”
"but i can say there’s more than one way to revive a teammate  "

"Q: Will there be an online matchmaking service (with co-op, or even clan wars)?
A: Yes. A: Yes.

Q: Is there an buddylist like quakelive where you can keep track of your mates? Q: Is there an buddy list like Quake Live where you can keep track of your mates?
A: Yes. A: Yes. "

"Q: Will BRINK support Linux or Mac OS?
A: Yes to Linux server support. A: Yes to Linux server support. not sure about Mac (will have to ask at work). Not sure about the Mac (will have to ask at work). "

that surfing thing also sounds interesting

and i just have to say congrats to rahdo for keeping his cool, just shows how stubborn people get about “their” games :\

also
"Q: No offence here, but Brink seems like a fantasy - just purely because we haven’t seen anything yet. I’ve seen some nice artistic pictures, big guns and explosions but this doesn’t mean anything in the long run - what sort of time frame will we get some actual game play videos? " lol XD

(tokamak) #333

Absolutely, I would’ve snapped early during the interview.

Q: Don’t put red arrows above your opponents’ heads. And don’t you even dare to think of health bars!
A: Yeah, no red arrows. Myself, I am a fan of letting someone see how close to death the enemy is when you mouse over him, but that’s totally something that you can turn off when setting up hardcore matches.

I really don’t like that, it makes players lazy, getting an enemy health bar in your screen means it’s okay to fire away, it’s a semi red arrow. TF2 solved this brilliantly by revealing clear wounds on player who are low on health. I think that’s far superior then showing health bars. Players can even prioritise between multiple targets by kill the wounded ones first.

Then again maybe I should be glad with having no red arrows at all (QW really was more fun without them).

(DarkangelUK) #334

I like how in Q3 the models make a different sound by how much health they have, giving a vocal indication that they’re hurt or healthy. the visual method in TF2 is quite good too.

(tokamak) #335

Oh sounds would be great as well. Hurt players breathe more heavily and cry louder when they’re hit. Working synergetically with ‘specialized hearing’

(SockDog) #336

That was a nice solution, you pretty much heard the armour being worn down. Of course you had to be hitting the person to actually get that feedback. It removes one additional GUI element to clutter up stuff too.

One thing though, Q3 had some pretty resilient health levels, if Brink is leaning more on the 1-5 hits with any weapon type stuff them maybe it’ll not be so effective.

>Can I insert here allowing local headshot sounds would be neat<

Don’t play TF2 but I agree the model damage method does look good too.
And adds one more dimension to your senses.

The fun part about the damage is that you can see if someone has been hit in the head allot. So not only can you judge the amount of hits he took but if you look a little closer you can also asses how severely he got hurt.

While we’re still talking about the gore:

There will be blood in Brink, is there any way the blood leaves traces on the environment? In Raven Shield the blood patterns on the wall reveal exactly from which angle someone has been shot, saved my head several times in that game by not being the next victim of my team mate’s killer.

(dohfOs) #338

tokamak, since you’re the author of the topic. add the link to this “new” q&a to your first post or many might miss it

(tokamak) #339

Ah yes good point

(Rahdo) #340

Yeah, that was a crazy weekend. I had just seen on crossfire they had made a section of their boards for Brink, and I thought “that’s nice of them, I should stop and say high”. Total rookie mistake  But by and large, it was a very civil and nice discussion… not at all what crossfire’s reputation is for. Just goes to show, I think, that pro players are people too, just like you and me

Don’t read too much into the surfing thing either. It may or may not pan out (which is why I didn’t go into any details, nor will I here). I was just teasing them a bit
