Brink Q&A

(Shiv) #301
1. I read speculation that BRINK will be on Steam, can this be confirmed?
2. Will there be Steam acchievements?
3. Or will this be a Games for Windows game on the PC and have Windows acchievements?

or none of course. ;)
congrats on reading 2 posts above yours.

(deadlights) #302

They anwsered question 2 and 3? Please point that out to me.

(tokamak) #303

So far Steam achievements only work for Valve games unless I missed something.

So

  1. Not confirmed but likely, Quake Wars is avaible there as well.
  2. Unlikely
  3. Nope.

Whats GFWL? :o

And also, since every playermodel is suppose to be (quite) unique looking, how can
you quickly tell what class someone is, if not by uniform ect.

Apparentely by their backpack.

GFWL = Games for Windows Live

I believe the whole steam platform is available for hooking into, from distribution right up to all the community features, DLC and whistles.

I’m wondering why SD would bother though. I mean if they’re getting so into bed with consoles why exert so much energy (and throw away all that Live compatibility) to move over to Steam. I suppose you could argue that they need to work on a solution for the PS3 so why not also pick one for the PC but still, mmmm.

Exciting though, like the thought of it being on Steam and integrating with the Steam Community features.

Agreed, most of the people i would be playing with are already on my Steam friends list already, and it’s nice having an external app to see whose playing without having to load the game and check the friends list.

I’m wondering though, will it have the same integration if you don’t actually buy it over Steam? I know you can add a non-steam game, but it’s just not the same :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess you could get into a discussion about pros and cons of Steam and GfWL but I think Steam has proven itself and I would have to think a while to find something positive about GfWL.

Are there any games that make use of the friends system (notification when someone is playing and the ability to join / invite friends) which are sold on Steam and separately and do not require Steam per default? Dawn of War 2 comes to my mind but I think that requires Steam even if you bought it in a store.

I’d do it for the reasons stated above my text that you quoted.

(tokamak) #311

Good point. Steam and non-steam versions of the game are still essentially two different games in practice.

(SockDog) #312

You can have Steam install as part of a retail package too. IIRC (and I’m going on forum posts from release, not personal experience) Saints Row 2 did this, the retail disc was pretty much a steam key with a preload version of the game files which unlocked when you installed etc.

(YaNz) #313

How do the shooting mechanics work?

Is movement speed a determining factor in accuracy? How is recoil, bloom, magnetism (for consoles) configured?

Does crouching improve accuracy? Is there a damage multiplier for headshots?

Edit: Also, how is the netcode set up for consoles? Dedicated servers (pleasssse)?
Is movement speed a determining factor in accuracy?

There are several different accuracy states based on your current movement state. Crouching does indeed improve accuracy, as does standing still. SMART moves tend to kick up inaccuracy, though some weapons feel more penalty than others (i.e. assault rifles are really rather accurate while slow. Pistols don’t have great accuracy at the best of times, but they don’t really lose much accuracy while you’re sprinting around - excellent for closing on enemies).

I’m still confuse about these steam thing.

  1. Does we still need to connect to internet to make steam works?
  2. If i want to play BRINK offline, do i need to connect too?
  3. Will BRINK have a retail version, because i like to have a hard copy of my game and i have a slow
    connection of internet?
  4. Can BRINK work at 128 Kbps or lower (64 Kbps for example) internet connection?
  5. What size of texture does SD use for BRINK, does it use 128K texture like RAGE?
  6. Can BRINK have this requirement, 2 Ghz proc, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB Vram( FX5700 and radeon 9600
supported) and can play it at 30-40 FPS?
  7. Will BRINK have Full Body Awareness like Left 4 Dead or Crysis?
  8. Does BRINK use OpenGL 3.2?
  9. What kind of movement SMART have, does it like Mirror’s Edge or like Assasins Creed?

That’s all my question about BRINK, thank you for answering.

I guess it should be said that it’s still early days. Steam is a possibility but might not be a certainty, take these comments with a pinch of salt.

1/2. You must activate an install online but after that you can run Steam in offline mode for as long as you please. You can also install as much as you want on however many PCs as you like (well I say that having never had, or heard of, an issue myself).

  1. It’s almost a certainty, even Valve has retail releases. Question is, will the retail release be a Steam compatible key and require Steam to work or will it be similar to ETQW and just use Steam as a disty platform.

  2. Clueless but I’d guess with the P2P nature of the console code keeping the network traffic down is going to be a goal.

  3. I hope the PC version either comes with or allows a download of higher res textures for those who can handle them. PC get’s looked over too much these days, we need something to justify spending the money on a good system.

  4. It’s id Tech based so should be pretty good at scaling but I’d imagine the requirements will be at least equal, most likely higher than ETQW.

  5. Do you mean can you see your own body? If so, no. Rahdo has said SD toyed with the idea but it was dropped.

  6. RR2D02 gave a techy based interview. IIRC they are using OpenGL but I’m not sure if it was 3.2. Search for RR’s posts.

  7. Like + Better + Guns = ???

(Loffy) #317

Will there be a gym?

  1. Games these days still only use around 4-8kbps up and down (ETQW was the same) so i don’t see this being any different.
  2. Since it’s a modified idtech4 engine, i wouldn’t have high hopes for that set up. When i started the ETQW beta i had a 2.2ghz CPU, 768mb ram and FX5900XT and struggled immensely, i also believe there were problems with the FX series in general. Time for an upgrade i think

Also any reason you’re comparing to Rage? I just ask cos there has been a few false facts going around saying Brink is on idtech5 engine same as Rage, when in fact it’s idtech4.

Hope this time, SD will optimize the engine so it can run well on minimum requirement. I compare BRINK with RAGE is because the texturing technology is basically the same but with different name.

(DarkangelUK) #320

Minimum specs these days is atleast a dual core and 1gb of ram, maybe you’ll get it running with it looking like Mario, but seems to shame to make such a game look so bad.

Guess I can’t really compare, but the name is the same but the tech was created independantly with no collaboration… guess virtual texturing was a cool name all round
