Brink PC Feedback

(legend123) #121

Once the numbers stop being stable and start to decline GREATLY. thats it.
The majority of people wont be informed of patches because they have given up.
Not everyone visits this forum or other brink forums with the important data.
I doubt this game will surpass 10,000 anymore sadly.

I mean on May 14 the peak was at 17,000 and TF2 had 21,000 (pretty damn close).
Then it went to 10,000 then to 7,000 :frowning:
Please disable the autofocus function while selecting a objective from the objective wheel or make it turnd on by default and give as the possibility to turn it of in the options.
the same thing goe’s for capturing a commanpost or planting a mine or what so ever the focus confuses and dont give you the possibility to look around if a enemy is near by.
I could be wrong, but I think you can disable objective wheel auto-look in the options, under ‘gameplay’.

As for my feedback, let me copy what I wrote in another thread:

Not considering any technical issues (lag, bad framerates, no sound, etc.) that people might have, I would say that the main issues with the PC version of Brink are (probably in this order):

1. The undesirable effects of the do-it-all use key, including accidentally performing unintended actions because you happen to be close to a certain player or object and having your movement controlled by the game at all. I think the first issue could be fixed by implementing a weapon/item bank and allowing for different types of actions to be binded to different keys. As for the game controlling your movement, I think that whatever benefits it might offer are greatly outweighed by the simple fact that it can often cause you to unpredictably look and move to places that you don’t want to look or move to just because you want to help your team out. And this can lead to annoying combat situations.

2. Lack of performance-friendly and competition-friendly customization options. In particular, you should be able to customize your HUD and video settings a lot more than you currently can.

3. Bad sound localization. The sound localization seems to be better in ET, which was made 8 years ago. In particular, I often find it hard to tell where gunshots are coming from, even when someone is shooting from just a few feet behind me. I also find it hard to hear footsteps and where exactly they are coming from.

4. No demo recording. This is especially important for competition, as it makes the detection of hackers much easier.

5. No first person spectating. It’s fun to be able to spectate your teammates after you die in first person because you are able to see what they see and how they are shooting or performing other actions.

6. Lack of manual voice chats. Not only did manual vsays add to the fun of playing ET and ET:QW, but they also helped players to coordinate their actions.

7. Bad in-game chat implementation. The global chat is the same color as the general info text, so it is easy to miss when people send a global message. Also, the width of the chat space is very small, making it somewhat awkward to read longer messages. Also, like many others have suggested, in-game chat should be allowed during the cinematics and basically at all times when a player is connected to a server (besides when the map is loading). Making it hard for players to communicate via text chat during the game just takes away from the social aspect of the gaming experience and makes players feel somewhat disconnected from one another.

8. The obtrusiveness of the objective wheel. While not a HUGE issue, I do find it annoying that the wheel takes up the screen and forces me to do something with my mouse other than changing the orientation of my character. Maybe they could implement an objective menu similar to the vsay menu in ET, where you can just press a certain combination of letters and numbers to pick which objective you want. That way, you can keep looking where you want to look while you quickly pick an objective. Like someone said in another post, I can’t imagine that they would have designed the objective-picking system in the way that they did if the game had been designed solely for PC.

9. Gun recoil, spread, and damage. This might be ranked higher on my list, but I don’t know all the facts yet. I have heard things like the spread of the guns is too random and too excessive, and I have kind of experienced this, but I need to pub more to really get a feel for any nuances with recoil and spread. I have noticed that iron sighting and crouching don’t really seem to help my accuracy much; I tend to get better results just by strafing and firing from the hip, which leaves me wondering if the gun/shooting system is perhaps flawed. The shooting does, in certain situations, certainly feel somewhat random, but maybe it is something that can be mastered…

10. Bad server browser filter system. It should be a lot easier to find the kind of server that you want to find.

11. Unskippable Cinematics. We should be able to skip whatever cinematics we want to. Further, we should have the option to have the game automatically skip them for us.

(stratman) #123

Apparently a patch going to be released early next week (this mon or tues). Anyone else know about this?

(Kurnuttaja) #124

What I want personally (apart from the biggest concerns):

  • Possibility to bind in mousewheel down and actually work
  • Weapon and ammo balance (especially ammo)
  • Separate slide button, apart from crouch
  • More video settings (bloom, DOF, low shadows and more)
  • Lobby

I think I’d need some more time with it though as the numbers seem to change depending on your class and current objectives.

Please look at it and let us know if you could live with it.

(Nail) #126

I thought you could disable OW focus in menu

(kristus) #127

Agree with OP and Dom. The one button to do everything is a nightmare. And pretty much everything about the UI was better in Quake Wars. (A bit of an exaggeration but you never had to “figure out” how to start a fire team for instance and the options were a lot more exstensive)

Would be nice if you could disable the objective wheel too. And replace it with something that doesn’t suck ass.

(Anderson) #128

Please add some crosshairs

(Matatron) #129

Great posts everyone. I really agree that the game feels like a pathetic console port for all the above reasons and more. How could Splash Damage have been willing to put their name on this. A single office playtest of the PC version should have immediately shown a number of these glaring issues.

Also no one has discussed the shift tab, click, shift tab, accept, click … menu flipping fiasco that is trying to join a friends game or play with friends. How did no one at SD notice this.

(Ark_peasant) #130

1. The undesirable effects of the do-it-all use key

  • 1 ^bazillion
    especially since I main Revive-Medic :s

2. Lack of performance-friendly and competition-friendly customization options
+1
Brink Config 1.5, should be in vanilla Brink though. With more competition-friendly options.

3. Bad sound localization

  • 0.5
When there’s sound, I never noticed some sort of “oh there’s sound localization”.
I never localized an enemy using the sound (while I do that in other games), I only used the blood splatters.
It’s not a deal breaker, but it would be nice to have such thing because you know, we’re in 2011.

4. No demo recording
+1
even if I don’t do competitive-gaming I know it’s mandatory. Without demo, you can’t fight hacker, you can’t rework your strategies, you can’t have an audience.

5. No first person spectating
-1, game design choice.
If an enemy saw you, the rest of the enemy shouldn’t be spotting your position at the same time, there’s no Situation Room in Brink.

6. Lack of manual voice chats
+1
No manual voice chats = less fun, less teamplay.
Do I need to remind SD the popularity of “Shazbot !” on Tribes, or the TF2 lines ? man, SD shaped a nice universe (the Ark), had good voice acting, why cutting the manual voice commands ? It doesn’t make sense ! Beta release ?

7. Bad in-game chat implementation
+1
So far, there’s no proper in-game chat. You can’t talk between games, you can’t ask for advices, you can’t tell your teamates important informations (like remaining time going short, a particular objective, the need for a push, etc).

8. The obtrusiveness of the objective wheel
+1
At the beginning I was using the objective wheel, but now I stopped using it. Never again. I can wait for experience, it’s not worth the pain.

  • it move your view around while you’re selecting objectives, it’s like a self-inflicted flashbang/melee blow

  • objectives are rarely at the same place on the wheel (as a Medic, “Revive teamates” should be on the right/left/down place all the time, so it doesn’t replace the Main Objective but can still be found easily).
Having a menu (like “B-5” for revives, “B-1” for main objective, “B-3” for command post) would be perfect.

  • It highlights the objective a lot. All the time. Even when you’re aiming at it or being close to it => To be able to take aim at enemies defending the objective, I had to select a different one (like “Nearest station”).

9. Gun recoil, spread, and damage
-1
It’s a run’n’gun type of game, having less spread and more recoil would slow down the pace and favor “tactical defense” (= camping).

Short bursts instead of full-auto actually works (especially for headshots at mid/long-range), it’s really deadly when mastered.
NB : Crouching accuracy bonus doesn’t stack up with iron-sight accuracy bonus. You’re still a smaller target though (an immobile one though²)

ps : Less daka-daka and more variety would be nice though, shotguns are rarely used and despite the Ark being the high-tech future world, there’s no original weaponry.

10. Bad server browser filter system
+1
There is NO server browser. There’s a server list dump.

With that “thing” we don’t “browse”, we simply can’t do that.

We search through a spreadsheet list, as there’s no filter (the only working setting is the password “yes/no”).
In my opinion the actual server browser wasn’t developed yet when they decided to do that beta release.
I hope there’s a dev working on it right now.

11. Unskippable Cinematics
+1
Brink Config 1.5, should be in the vanilla Brink.

. . .

Minor problems :

A. “Return to Main Menu” to try new abilities, why ?
You’re playing on a good server with cool players, the game experience is so good you’re making tons of experience and playing several maps with the same people.
And you just gained a rank, some points for a new ability.
And here’s the dilemma : Should I leave the server to try/buy these new abilities (to later find out the server is now full), or should I stay on the server, eat up my frustration and play without these new abilities ?

B. Changing weapons before map start is impossible, why ?
When you start a new map, you can’t change your weapon loadout before the round starts. You finished the last map with a specific weapon loadout, and now you need to change it for the new map, but you’ll have to waste several seconds changing it at the command post (ending up alone and late on the front).
I don’t see how it could be a game design decision.

. . .

Also,

  • error 8 crash everytime I play the game (every 2 hours most of the time)

  • no sound on 30% of the maps (need to leave the server when the map finally change and rejoin to get the sound back)

  • lag not being detected by the ping indicator (the netgraph -sometime- shows the extra latency)

  • overall bad optimization :
Fall to 29 fps during action with an Athlon II X4 645 - GTX 460 - 4 Gb RAM -Win 7, 1680x1050, Textures to high, Shadows to middle, Motion Blur on, default Anisotropy (x8), no AA, no Post Proc, no Ambient Occlusion.

(legend123) #131

Ive already posted just came into say that the majority of suggestions here are excellent.
I could now name like 30 things to improve with this game :frowning:

(abnorm) #132
  • add a clickin sound when you try to shut whit no bullets in.
  • seperate revive from the all_in_one_use_consoleport_madness.
  • bring back stafejumping to get a proper and faster movement.
  • seperate buttons for sprint and smart
  • increase headshot damage
  • reduce weaponspread
  • add dot crosshair only
  • demo support
  • first person spec.
  • add hitsounds!!!

(Kendle) #133

There would be no poiint to demo recording if you didn’t have 1st person spec as well, you can’t catch cheats if you can’t spec them from their point of view, see what they see thru their eyes.

(rand0m) #134

This game could have been so much better if they actually followed their PC roots. Consoles are ruining PC gaming. Good MMO’s are all that’s left for the PC.

(legend123) #135

Another example of a sad but true thing.

I personally dont play MMOs though. And you forgot RTS games (starcraft, etc).

(rand0m) #136

It’s a shame there is not a good single forum post on the front page of the forums. This game could be great. Maybe in the hands of a pro-mod. I wish Rhea was still around for some OSP. It feels like I’m beating a dead horse here but SD this game could be SO much better and you know it. You ruined it by making it a console game. Stick go the PC. YOU COULD HAVE MADE MORE MONEY ON THE PC IF YOU ACTUALLY MADE THIS A PC GAME, PC GAMERS WERE LOOKING FOR THIS AND TOU FAILED TO DELIVER. I still enjoy the pubs to an extent, but it could be A LOT better and easier to control. Half the time my buff button doesn’t even work. And just gives up. Why not just give medic packs and ammo packs? Oh wait I know why because you made everything one retarded button cause you took the console version and made it work on windows.

(xtn) #137

I agree too that “multipurpose” do-it-all f-key is not a good idea. I tend to play mostly medic and reviving/buffing is sometimes quite difficult. I don’t like it when I try to buff/heal someone and then my player runs stright to the line of fire. Or when reviving I have to first try to get “lock on” and then use fkey, ofcourse hope too that my player does not try to run itself.

Here is idea how to improve things:

  • separate revive and healing to own weapon banks. Using them with left mouse button.
  • healing could work to person im looking at but not auto running things. I only need to be close enough. Me, as a player, is responsible to move closer if needed.
  • revive --> implement it similar way how lazarus nade works currently. Throwing distance could be much shorter compared to the lazarus.

(sirius89) #138

I couldn’t agree more.

All mechanics in this game are for ****ty consoles and not for a PC game.

Why having every action on F?OH WAIT,cause of ****ty consoles.
Why do i have to hold down a button to revive myself or something,OH WAIT,cause of ****ty consoles.

Meh. :frowning:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-doMBaqhd34

Bring this back please. This game had so much going for it, then suddenly you guys just decided to destroy something that could have been a masterpiece…
Don’t get me wrong, the Brink we have now is still fun, but comparing it to the 2009 version, it makes the current Brink seems like a mess…

What happened.??? :[

(rand0m) #140

The video there is still a TERRIBLE xbox version.
