It still kills me that Counter Strike Source is still the top of the steam games list.
The game isnāt that great, and it is older than dirt. It just shows that the player base is willing to put up with a vanilla plain game as long as the community has ways to work on it themselves (as in creating mods and levels via source).

Yep. Itās always been the community increasing the longevity of games. Developers just canāt keep up the way a community can.
Thatās why I hate this era of DLC and renewing the franchise every (other)year. The companies donāt know what gamers want more than the gamers do. They have guidelines they have to follow. Not to mention the content that we have to pay for will pale in comparison to what passionate gamers will come up with out of joy. At least the majority of the time simply due to the sheer amount of mappers.
Personally I feel that if an SDK was released with every game that was PC only or multiplatform the gaming community would be better off.
Said like someone who truly fails to understand heās just validated these numbers are indicators of the gameās popularity.
Edit: Also a number bump for a patched release is hardly shocking

I think itās testament to a good design and hardware requirement that hits a lot of the right buttons. Now Iām not saying I find it enjoyable but if you want popularity and success aiming for a tiny niche isnāt really going to work in nearly every instance. It also shows that a large active community can feed into itself (look at CoD) and sustain a playerbase. I certainly donāt want to pick up a game with a tiny or shrinking community.
SD seem to approach this from the polar opposite making games that have steep learning curves, high hardware requirements and full retail prices. W:ET arguably is successful because itās free and also because itās not as confusing to play as ETQW or Brink. As I keep parroting, I still maintain Brink would have fared better with multiple game modes to keep an active community in the game rather than keep trying to force people to like it or leave it.
Its easily the biggest $60 console purchase flop Iāve ever bought. It is pretty much unplayable on console.
Popularity greatly influences my tastes. If everyone else likes it, chances are, Iām not gonna.
I like '80s- early '90s thrash metal. Is it popular? hell no. Do I care? hell no.
I find documentaries to be more entertaining than action movies. Is that popular?
I love this game. Do I care if itās not as popular as āthe othersā? hell no.
The herd decides whatās popular. :stroggtapir::stroggtapir::stroggtapir:
Gamers were always the outcasts, why now does everyone put so much stock into
which games have x number of people playing them?
If you canāt have fun playing this game then
āUR DOIN IT WRONGā
This entire post speaks volumes about the state of PC gaming in general compared to everything else. Or am I off-base saying that? I think if you add up the total number of players on this list it probably adds up to the number of people on a given day playing CODBlops on just Xbox, nevermind PS3. Or is that off-base?
500 people playingā¦omg.

You forgot MMOs and RTS. At Dreamhack the LoL tournament had over 170k viewers on stream. Yes thatās more than 170,000 people watching people play a PC game. The game is what makes the difference not the platform. If the game grabs the community it will flourish else it will fail.
There is also 120k ppl playing CS and CS:S combined every day.
If all the guys on that list had up to date, awesome PCs ,would they still be playing those old ass games?
probably not.
Broke PC guys FTL.

Wrong. 10chars.
Yes they would. I know I played CSS before my PC burned, and I was forced to use this crap notebook.
On my 360, I have recently played CoD:BO, and BFBC2 again and just didnāt have as much fun as I do in Brink. In fact, the one-shotting snipers pissed me off so much, I rage quit BFBC2 in about 10 minutes.
As long as there are a few dozen people who like to play Brink, I think Iāll be fine. All we need is 8 vs 8.
Ha! You WOULD need 8v8 if there was only ONE game mode, and ONE map. And donāt forget about connection. And playing against the same people gets boring. Bigger fanbase=better chance on playing your favorite mode, on your favorite map with good connection.
Stop being dumb.

Not being dumb. There is a group of about 20 or so ppl who STILL meet up once a week online and play Perfect Dark Zero. My friend is one of them. I donāt do it b/c I suck at that game and those guys pwn me.
I like Brink. I am sure there will be 1000s of people on XBL whoāll play Brink over the course of the next 6-12 months. Once BF3/MW3/GoW3/Skyrim/Uncharted3 are all out, I may move on. Until then, I am playing Brink for my MP fix.
Why are you still here if you hate Brink? Quit yer whiningā¦
