I believe you yakies now…New Yorkers ARE rude. In relation to me posting in this thread, what the fuck are you on about man, why are mac users posting in a forum COMPLETELY dedicated to a PC game and a game which looks like it never will be on anything else. I do wish you had it on your machines, the more the merrier.
Brad Oliver of Westlake has offered to port the Mac version
For that reason alone…Splash Damage created ET for iD and Activision, not to mention Q3F AND they are in charge of all of the Wolfenstein patches and upkeep(Both of which are available on the Mac).
A forum solely dedicated to a PC game? Not in the slightest.
I don’t see how my post came across as Rude…but that doesn’t matter, now does it.
I’ll continue working on iD/Activision, but if anyone from the SD team could point me to the right people, I’d be most grateful.
The matter really isn’t who does the port. Its the necessary QA approval that would need to be done before it was released. It wasn’t budgeted for, so therefore, it’s going to be like drawing blood from a stone to get either iD or Activision to agree to anything, as the QA aspect isn’t Free.
Please dont let this thread devolve into a personal attack flame war.
Although I understand it isnt ‘completely free,’ the act of allowing the source code to be used by those generous enough to port it would create good will from Macintosh users, and consequently more sales in the future. Sometimes you have to look past the tiny initial loss to see that this gesture could be benificial for other games (Doom 3). Mac users would see that they care about Mac gaming and in turn we are more likely to buy their games.
Inversly, ID/Activision by taking almost four months to approve RtCW to be released and the incredible long wait to get those updates approved created resentment of the company. This dampened the incredible enthusiasm for RtCW for Mac to average levels, and I suspect this incident will remain in our minds when ID tries to sell us Doom III.
They should follow Blizzard entertainments example, they have ported every game to the Mac and a good percentage of the time release Mac/PC games same day. Because of their reputation of quality I bought Warcraft III the very day released without knowing much than it was a sequel to Warcraft 2, and it has proved to be the same high quality that Blizzard represents.
Ya gotta admit though Matt that buying a game just because a company has a reputation for releasing a game for your platform on the same day as the major platform isn’t really reason enough to buy their releases from now on without knowing much about them. I was going to try and remember a C64 and Spectrum equivalent but my university years get in the way, whatever happened in them
:???: :drink:

Another thing Cannonfodder, I think you’ve got guts to take on the mission of pushing whoever into hopefully doing a conversion but has it ever worked with other titles and I mean that as an honest question and not a “piss take”. :???:
I purchased WC3 because I knew it would be a high quality game, and being a fan of Starcraft/Warcraft 2, Blizzard gave me little reason not to buy it.
Well, to a lesser extent, there was no Mac SDK for Wolf whatsoever up until a few months ago when I started in on that. That meant that we had no ability to properly play any mods as the code in Mac Wolf 1.41 is pretty well messed up
It’s about finding the right person, and hoping that they are able to actually do something…No guarantees, but it can’t hurt if done in a rational and polite manner.
I know exactly who Brad is talking about, but it isnt a westlake guy. Im pretty sure hes referring to Cannonfodder and his buddies (even if Brad didnt know it was CF and pals who helped rhea do the mac OSP port)
Actually, he’s referring to himself in that quote, as Brad did work with Rhea some once we hounded him more about the proj files being borked
My post was not intended to be a direct slag on splashdamage. You will notice that I never once directed my tirade at any one particular company. While you may not be the major factor in the non-release, I’m sure you have more pull in the matter than your average forum goon.
This is simply one of the “closest to the heart” (thanks Geddy) forums around. If I posted this in a thread at bitchaboutgames.com It surely would not be heard by anyone with a 3 digit I.Q.
So in summation, great job on ET splashdamage. I hear it is a great game. I would however like to have some firsthand knowledge, so any effort you make to encourage this to happen is greatly appreciated. It saves me from having to pluck ball hairs until I get what I want. :eek3:
P.S. Correct me if I’m wrong. (I’m sure I will receive many degredations) but I find it hard to believe that there is a larger Linux gaming community, than Mac gaming community. Remember, I’m not talking about users, I’m talking about gamers. I would be extremely interested in knowing the sales comparison from Linux to Mac of rtcw.
Oh, and here’s a cow chewing gum! :moo:
PEACE
i bet if the moment valve announces a Mac version of Half Life 2 will be released, you’ll see an announcement from Activision that a Mac version ET will be released… just a bet. any takers?
I honestly doubt it, but it would be a good marketing ploy. It will surely make the difference of wether I buy Half Life2 or Burn it.
Uh, Hi Activision…can we please have a Mac version? :banghead:
Uh, Hi ID…can we please have a Mac version? :banghead:
Uh, Hi wife… can I please have some sex? :banghead:
In my experience plying the wife with copious amounts of alcohol often works, give it a go on the other two. Just be careful though as twin baby girls happened last month but I have no idea what might sprout from the other two parties you mentioned.
Trust me, you guys have more ‘pull’ in matters like this - you’re Activision’s customers, not us
Subtlety is sometimes lost when a comment moves from forum to forum.
Anyway, I’m the person that made the offer to do the port for free. I e-mailed Locki at splash damage, but to this day haven’t heard anything back. I don’t know who else to contact, so I’ve deferred to Scott on that. From what I can tell, the idea of a Mac version is going absolutely nowhere, which is a shame.
To be honest, I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I’ve seen the Wolf code and the Quake 3 code for a few other games (Alice, MOHAA, Elite Force and JK2). It’s just a matter of signing another NDA. As for it costing money for QA, they could easily release the Mac version as-is and with the note that it has not gone through an official QA process. It’s certainly better than nothing. After all, the “Wolf MP test” was released on the Mac without any QA.
Very good points, Brad Oliver
I’d glady accept an “as-is” Wolf ET.
Perhaps the Splash Damage guys could email ID/Activision in behalf of you and us fellow Mac users?
