Brad Oliver of Westlake has offered to port the Mac version

(MattOSX) #1

Dear Splash Damage,

Brad Oliver of Westlake, a major Macintosh porting has volunteered to freely port the Macintosh version of Wolf: Enemy Territory. He has ported many games of this engine to the Mac, you have nothing to lose, you can only gain respect from us fellow Mac gamers by allowing him the chance.

Thanks,

Matt

(duke'ku) #2

I really think he should, but only for Mac OS X… Mac OS 9 opens up a few holes and takes a considerable time to port for…

(Sacrifice) #3

MattOSX: Is this Matt L. aka Woodman?

(bani) #4

i dont think splashdamage has any say in the matter. its up to id or activision…

(MattOSX) #5

I’m not Woodman, but when I saw his post at IMG, it drove me to post here.

([=O=]SMYLER) #6

I wish you macintosh lads all the best with a port to your boxes, but why is a member of the public telling the creators of this fine game what some other (obviously talented) macintosh individual who seems to be a bigwig in his field, that he is willing to work on the conversion. SURELY if it were a fact there are channels that these people use, like I don’t honestly believe it is up to me to post on the White House website that Mr. T. Blair has made his orifice available for some good old Texas lovin’ (the Bush idiot is from Texas isn’t he?), there is obviously a “pink” phone for this purpose.

(Woodman) #7

Yo Sacrifice! (SP) That is not me, this is!

That guy is obviously Cool2

I believe MattOSX (keep on rockin’ brutha) was not speaking “for” Brad Oliver, he was merely venting upon a growing frustration in the Mac community.

Brad & other (I know of 1 for sure) highly qualified Mac programmers have graciously offered up there services, FREE of charge (did you hear that guys) Yes free, to port ET into Mac. All they require is the sourcecode.

This gamer is dumbfounded as to why the sourcecode will not be released to a reputable source, to appease a growing number of irrate Mac Gamers. Obviously, it would not reap the vast profits leached from the PC community, but…wait a minute. Oh yeah, it was FREE!

Here in lies my personal dilemma (aside from being extraordinarily endowed) If the game is Free & always has been, what beyond some dumb political posturing would keep the fine Programmers of ET from allowing a Mac Port?

I assure you that this post represents a mass of unhappy Mac’ers. Check out Forums at Insidemacgames.com or Macgamer.com & read the pages upon pages of scorn.

Your help in delivering a Mac port will surely be reflected by your future “sales”.

PEACE!, I’m outta here. :banghead:

I don’t know if you guys missed this from Brad Oliver, but this is the last thing he said on this whole matter…

“I hear one of the Westlake guys has volunteered to do it for free. He’s also the same guy who made the first working build of the OSP mod for Mac Wolf and who has worked on several other Mac Q3-based ports. It sounds like finding someone qualified to do the work for free is already taken care of. :)”

Brad Oliver

I don’t know who Brad is talking about, but he definitely sounds qualified.

Also, Woodman, I wouldn’t go generalizing too much about mac gamers and “the pages upon pages of scorn” at IMG. You make it sound like we’re all just sitting around pissed off about ET. And I don’t recall the ET thread being scornful anyway. It’s been mostly people asking simple questions. Like you also said in your post, I think “frustrated” is a better word. Let’s just be patient, there’s probably some behind-the-scenes dealing going on anyway.

(Wils) #9

This is at least the third Mac ET thread we’ve had in General Discussion. What gives?

We aren’t responsible for deciding if ET is ported to Mac or not - that’s up to id and Activision, as bani rightly pointed out.

Please bear in mind that even with an offer to port it for free, Activision would still most likely want to run it through QA to make sure it’s solid and stable, and that isn’t free.

([=O=]SMYLER) #10

Wils I think it might be a good idea to put up a sticky basically saying that ET ain’t gonna be on a mac near you or anyone else in the forseeable future, it’ll save a lot more people getting their hopes up only to have them dashed on the mac keyboard of doom.

(kingspeck) #11

well, there are a LOT of mac gamers that want ET, and I guess they didn’t all get the memo about Activision and id. It’s logical to come here first.

(Dawg) #12

I feel for the Mac users. They are missing out on a good thing. Are there some good Windows emulators that would enable them to play using the windows client?

I think a sticky thread is a good idea but I think that the subject matter can be a little more informative. To say, “Its just not going to happen.” is not necessarily accurate. The developers and producers of the games do not tell us everything they are doing. For all we know, they MAY be trying to work something out for porting to the Mac.

So I would suggest a (locked?) sticky thread that gets updated as info gets released.

  1. ET is not currently available for the Mac
  2. SplashDamage has no say in whether ET gets ported to the Mac
  3. id/Activision have the final say on the matter (contact info ?)
  4. blah blah

Just a thought…

Dawg

I think Brad Oliver should stop wasting his time, and start trying to get the Mac “Gamers” to get a real fucking computer and stop playing with child toys.

(kingspeck) #14

Lockage in 10,9,8,…

(Woodman) #15

Ahhh, Apparently the short bus has arrived carrying the special needs children.

Once again, an informative, interesting, intelligent thread has been tarnished by an unoriginal Mac bash.

Now go clean up that puddle of urine your standing in.

:bash:

(Emon) #16

That’s the second time this week I’ve had to use that.

([=O=]SMYLER) #17

Are there any capable windows emus for macs ?
Although I’d bet trying to emulate win xp or such and then run space invaders on it would be strain enough never mind something like ET.
But the first question still stands.

(kingspeck) #18

yes, there are (VirtualPC, RealPC), but they’re not made for gaming and they don’t take advantage of graphics cards, so they’re usually not worth the trouble. You can play some RPG/Strategy games, but generally the 3D games are just too much. I read the next version of RealPC is supposed to incorporate 3D cards and is more focused on games though, we’ll see.

MOST of the popular PC games are ported to Mac anyway, so it’s not usually necessary.

([=O=]SMYLER) #19

I was gonna say maybe these dual processor macs would stand a chance but once again the “go and buy an entry level PC” would probably be cheaper as I’m sure not many have them or have any need for them whatsoever.

(CannonFodder) #20

It’s all a matter of choice. I’ve got a P4 at home as well, in addition to my main machine which is one of those Dual Proc G4s. Do I want to play ET on it? Not really.

Smyler, why you even care to post in this thread, aside from Trolling, is beyond me.

Brad offered his services to port ET (which in reality isn’t that daunting a task) for free, not the company he works for (Westlake Interactive).
We know that Activision didn’t budget for any QA on a Mac port. There’s no doubt that the whole approval process is going to be difficult, and finding the right people to talk to is where everything stands. People have been emailed at both iD and Activision about it.

That being said, We, as Mac gamers, want to be able to play ET on OUR platform of choice at some point…plain and simple.

Wils, Locki, and crew…We know you guys aren’t the ones that get to say yes or no…We just want to be able to play the game you created.
