BR mode : Base Race !

(Rex) #41

I’m not totally against it, but for me this should be asked 1 year after the release, as they have to lay their focus on the normal maps/modes first.

No, I don’t think so. Since when was baserace played as competitively? I consider this rather as a fun map.

(RasteRayzeR) #42

When there is fun there can be competition. I know you are not exactly a fan of this mode, but as long as there is a goal and two teams fighting for it, then there can be competition.

And for the time to make this I believe that proposing only tdm and objective/stopwatch upon release will be like ignoring a lot of potential players. We need a more popular game mode too.

(Dragonji) #43

There were/are a lot of Baserace tournaments/cups in W:ET (8v8/10v10).

(Rex) #44

You mean not exactly a fan of this for comp play, but on pub I also enjoyed some rounds there.

Wait wait, ignoring a lot of potential players because there is “only” objective/stopwatch?
Seems like you aren’t from the SD universe, as stopwatch is the most popular mode in their games! We even got a new mode with TDM now, so I can’t really see the need for additional ones.

Well, I don’t consider some random fun cups hosted by clans as real competition.

(Rex) #45

Delete please, forum wasn’t reacting.

Basically the only two other games I knew before SD games were both quake and UT franchises … I grew up with SD games and played them all for years. And that’s why I can tell that objective/stopwatch last only a certain time before you get bored of them. For me it take about 350-400 hours of game. And TDM will be insta death for most players, so yeah, a mode like BR is a must imo upon release of the game.

(Rex) #47

Don’t generalize your opinion here please. The majority is playing these modes now for years (!) in any SD game.
Fun maps/modes are unnecessary at this stage of developement, as they also require a lot of time to make them.
Later I would say ok, of course.

(RasteRayzeR) #48

I’m not generalizing, I’m telling what I see. All my friends played roughly the same amount of time (350-400h) with me on ET:QW, and finally left because it was so repetitive in the end. Brink lasted 2 weeks with the same group of people. And look at the servers : brink = dead, ET:QW is a living-dead game. Only W:ET remains with full servers to play on at any hour of the day and one reason to this is because there is more than “only” objective/stopwatch (I’m not saying this is the only reason, I see you coming Rex ^^).

I also think about the F2P business management of DB and you need to get players, a lot of players to make this profitable. With you Rex I feel like it is always only the pro-player opinion that matters, whereas DB will be for both pro and casual players (no hard feelings, I understand your point of view and it is good to make the game with high standards ;-), but pro-players alone won’t be able to populate DB’s servers fully. Plus DB is looking for a way to be special among all the other F2P games, this is a good opportunity to do so.

Anyway, whether this has to come with release or later is not an important question right now. I started this thread to see if people would like such a mode in DB, the answer from the poll is clearly yes, and now we can brainstorm on it in order to propose a fairly clean concept to SD so they may say yes or no.

And that’s precisely what I would like to know right now, I’d like that someone from SD tells us if it is worth investing more ideas and work on this matter or not.

Alright.
(But your argument with the dying games is still stupid, at least you said it wasn’t the only reason. I hope you didn’t just write this for me.)

(Dragonji) #50

One of the reasons why W:ET is still alive is that there are a lot of different gametypes/modes: regular objective, Baserace, TDM (basically the most of 30+ slots servers are TDM even if g_gametype says something else), trickjump, timerun etc.

oh, it would be hypocrisy … I’m the kind of guy who says what he thinks :oppressor:

Base Race was SO much fun in ET. Really love this mode!

(Ashog) #53

Yay to Base Race. Why the hell not? More fun is always welkam.

(kilL_888) #54

so, if i got it right it’s like, there’s a thing in the middle of the map that you have to grab and bring to your base to score a point? sounds great. havn’t done this before.

(RasteRayzeR) #55

The idea is the following : you have two bases, symmetrical map, and you have to infiltrate the enemy base, grab construction material, and bring it back home. Upon bringing it to your base, you will unlock fences, automated turrets, etc. etc.

In the middle of the map (equally accessible for both teams), there would be secondary objectives granting advantages, like radar, mines, supplies, etc.

ah, so it’s more of a capture the flag (get into enemy base) ala tribes ascend (base assets). sounds good, too but i would be curious how the gameplay would be if the main objective is in the center of the map. (without fences etc.)

(Dragonji) #57

kilL_888, W:ET is only about 260MB big and is a free game. You can download it and check Baserace yourself

(RasteRayzeR) #58

My idea here is to improve the original base race. In the middle there are so many possibilities to make nice confrontation spots for the teams. Also it is not mandatory that all construction materials are in enemy’s bases. They can be dispatched in the “no-man’s land” too. There is a lot that can be done to make this a new-old game mode.

Plus, such a mode would really use the data collected by ECHO.

(kilL_888) #59

wolf et installer is something that never got erased from my hd.

anyways… i saw a video about the map and somewhere deep within my subconscious mind, i remembered playing it on a lan. feels like another life though.

(Breo) #60
That’s a great idea, and I don’t know if you guys remember, but there was the “Base Race” map in W:ET which was really fun. Basically you had to get in the enemy base, fetch a construction pack as a carriable, and bring it back to your own base. These would then grant you better defenses, automatic turrets, fences, new routes, etc … and there was some kind of “no man’s land” between the two bases.

This could be extremely fun in DB, this is really the perfect setup for such a game type, with small bases you may really upgrade nicely with automated defenses, etc. Suits nicely for competition as teamwork is highly required and forces strategies to defend and attack at the same time ! Lots of new mechanics could be invented for such a mode.

So, yay or ney ?
I like the idea of multiple objects at the same time for both sides. What I dislike are the “upgrades” for the base because when the teams are not balance it will give the stronger team even more “firepower”, that’s why I think that the traditional CTF is a better alternative.
