BR mode : Base Race !

(Pytox) #61

This would be great, although best only for pub mode not in comp
I remember playing some baserace in w:et & was pretty fun

Well obviously this is for pub play. This is exactly what the game currently lacks. Can’t really build a good game for both comp and pub without specialized game modes for each.

I think BR would be highly entertaining as an esport from an audience point of view. It’s basically the MOBA of the FPS genre.

So, I managed to find some time to think about a base race map. I love the history and geometry of the British department for culture and so I decided to go with it for a first try :

The two bases are in front of each other, with a vue on a bit of each other. In red are the three main ways of traversing the map : one in the center (not opened so snipers get a hard time shooting there), one you have to climb in the round building on the first floor, where you may also find the first common objective, and finally on the other side of the round building, an underground / trenches-like passage.

There are two common objectives : an antena to call for backups (provides upon hacking it a massive airstrike in the middle of the map), and a vault to offer extra money for constructions.

Each base has main objectives that may be stolen : one has the Churchill’s war rooms filled with top secret documents, and the other base has the treasury of the queen, with its beautiful royal jewels worth a lot !

Upon collecting these, the player gest money to upgrade the base as he wishes (fences, sentries, minefields, new routes, etc.) but all are destroyable with C4. The goal is to make a small and very dynamic map, for 10vs10.

So, what do you think of it guys ? Any advice or new ideas to fill in or to replace some I had ? I will start to sketch some concept arts on this and post them here soon I hope ^^

Finally got around to taking a more detailed look at this. I can see a lot of potential in the mode, but I didn’t find the map I played in ET particularly fun. What was it that made the mode so good for you folk? When was it at its best? I’d be interested to know what you liked and disliked in it.

People want a modular battlefield to fight in. It’s just enormously satisfying to flick a switch, complete an objective, have something large move and immediately impact the way other people suddenly have to navigate the map.

  • The fighting around and in the maze was fun

  • The defending engineers could block the objectives and entraces. Again comes class-based gameplay. Team-Mate spotted the mines and somebody disarmed them or a engi with explosive perc just ran into them.

  • It was fun to see the impact of the different base-parts (When the enemies always took the side entrace, build the fence on the side first)

  • There were fun fights when ppl. took the objectives and finally made it to the foot switch. Always rockets and grenades incoming, the teams had to protect the objective carrier.

  • Running around as a disguised covert ops in the enemy base was super-duper-fun. I always pretended to check the maze entrances or protect the objective

  • Building the huts felt like an achievement, because free-ammo, free-health and other upgrades had huge impact for the defending team-mates.

As far as I remember, I always played BaseRace with No-Quarter Mod. (at least ET Pub.). There also was this mod for the syringe that made it venomous. Was awesome to camp the maze with that thing and run away after hitting an enemy  total statisfaction!

Thats the TL : DR version

What was it that made the mode so good…

Are we talking about the custom map Baserace by CptnTriscuit (who also made Mitchell Down, I think)? I enjoyed that map a lot because it reminded me of CTF with the inherent two-base-layout, and a run-into-the-enemy-base-and-steal-stuff-mentality. It allowed me to either be up there, on the frontline, supporting/stealing/fragging, or lurk mid-field, to seek opportunitistic kills and act as a sort of forward-defence. And/or stay in our base, defending our stuff (this was equaly fun, at least for me). There were a couple of clear roles to play, in other words. There was more to it, but I’ll stop for now.

You need to gather lots of objectives. Kinda you have something for every kind of player. Snipers get there targets, rushers (like me) can rush for objectives, campers have lots of spots to wait, engineers planting there landmines have lots of room,
And since your building up your base, you can even rage at the noobs building the wrong thing first, or admire those building the correct thing.

There is some sense of advancing. And you can either defend or attack, both are quite usefull. Although mostly the team attacking more on the average is gona win. But well thats not so sure.
Baserace beta 2 (I guess it was that one) has a random area, so the center of the map is randomized, and you get on every map restart a new maze in the middle. Its on of the rare maps doing that good.

There are servers where double jump is enabled, and it often ruins this map in my opinion, as it makes it very simple to hop it and out of the enemy base. Also once you have a lvl 4 medic hut, you kind have constant adrenaline + medpacks. So the map is better without doublejump and adrenaline.

How about we get DB working first… This is great talk for 3 years down the road but servers are empty… This would be cool for one of those limited time deals like LOL does with its modes…

I didn’t say we’re working on anything like this, I just asked a question to get some feedback. Cool your jets

Pretty much this is what i liked about BR.
I also liked the fog  and when i was able to shoot down a panzerfaust grenade

You don’t need the game-mode to get what made the game-mode fun. Objective also lends itself to have this sandbox (or toybox rather) type of setting to fight in.

It’s harder to reconcile this with Stopwatch because Stopwatch needs a streamlined setting to be exciting. The more malleable the map, the higher the standard deviation on the completion times which in turn means that stopwatch games are not comparable enough to matter.

I do think that deeply interactive and contestable environments are the future. That’s what Blizzard is doing with Heroes of the Storm. Old and test game-mode but with an entirely new setting where teams can heavily manipulate their surroundings. ā€œThe world is your playgroundā€ or something similar would be a huge marketing phrase. The idea that you can tweak London to your advantage and screw over your opponents would be the biggest selling point this game can have.

It just clashes with streamlined trial runs. It doesn’t make either one of them bad, they just compromise too heavily on what makes them fun.

(Dragonji) #74

Well, playing BR objectively is really fun because everytime you play it you can win by having completely different tactics and the base can be built in many ways but it is completely boring on pub servers because everyone plays just for frags. At least this is how I see it.
