Patch 1.12 has completely killed the game in my eyes and is looking forward for a fresh look on what looks like a brilliant game, enjoyed wolfenstienET so cant wait for Quake wars and i feel that many in BF2 world are aswell by the anger in the rooms for a patch that supposed to have been tested and now looks like its been made by a 9yr old coder and tested by noobs.
BF2 is now dead, we await your arrival
BF2 is the 3rd most played fps online, only beaten by HL1 (CS) and HL2 (CS:S). ET, for instance, has around 1/3rd of the online player share that BF2 has.
The game has severe balance issues (although this latest patch seem to have fixed a number of them). The game has had stupid bugs (red friendly name anyone?) since day one. EA commercial expansion packs/booster packs/whatever suck and they’re just breaking the player base while mining for money. But dead? Far from it.
Zeh, popularity means fuck all. Just because there are a lot of idiots with money to waste on a crap game dont mean it was ever good, therefore ever alive!
And then the fact that SD has spent like €0 on marketing, while i see BF2 comericials everyday or something like that! Et is also like 2 years older then BF2. People who bought BF2 had the next reasons to buy it:
- They didnt know there was anything better then BF2 cuz of the comercials
- They had too much money and so just bought they game altough they tought it would be #unknown game from EA with too much bugs.
also a new patch was just released, i am d/ling it now, has ALOT of changes which are exactly what the doctor ordered. God i cant wait to play it!
Regarding BF2’s popularity, is that with or without bots filtered? I haven’t been keeping track, but the last stats I saw on csports.net (which filters bot names for accuracy, supposedly) actually had it underneath ET. As far as I could tell, BF2 players play their game for longer, but there are less of them.
Gringo - I know that. I sure as hell hate BF2 and everything with “CS” in it. That doesn’t mean the games are bad because they have many players either - after all, in retrospect, does this means that RTCW is better than ET just because it is less popular? Is my game with 5 players worldwide a super duper game because so few people play it? And at which point does mine or your opinnion count ‘more’ than anyone else’s anyways? I’m just pointing out that, as much as you, myself, and sci-fi might hate it, that doesn’t mean the game is dead, because it sure has some following. More than following ruthless tribal rules for what’s good and what’s bad - I love Carmack for that comment - I prefer to judge each game as it is. I like what I like, other people’s mileave may vary, but I sure as hell won’t say something is dead just because I don’t like it, specially when numbers say otherwise.
Of course what Scifi said is a bit different - “dead for me” is another thing. In practice, BF2 is also dead for me, as the patch 1.12 (previous to 1.2) has broken my game installation and it won’t run anymore without crashing to the desktop so I just lost interest in it.
Wils: BF2 doesn’t show up as a public server when bots are on. Bots, for all effects, are only available on singleplayer games - people can connect to it, but only if they know the IP. GameSpy stats count ‘normal’ (public) servers only.
CSports.net has the same problems many of these sites have - they don’t have a complete list of servers for certain games. That’s why Gamespy will show a lot more BF2 servers then csports (gamespy maintains EA master servers), while csports, being focused on CS and HL*, will show more HL1 servers, but less HL2 servers (don’t ask me why).
I heard all the time that “csports doesn’t count bots” but I never found anything from them (some faq, or anything) to back that up. From what I know, they only filter ut2k4 bots, because they’re properly marked as bots when the server is queried about game states. Let me know if you know anything about it, as it’s of my interest to have accurate numbers.
csports.net is currently down for server maintenance, but the google cache reveals:
Rank, Name, Online Now
1, Call of Duty II, 19,378
2, Counter-Strike [1.6], 16,035
3, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, 10,445
4, Battlefield 2, 9,037
5, Call of Duty, 7,866
6, Counter-Strike Source, 6,129
this is totally different to http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/
but counting the bots would explain why half life 1 is still nr 1 at gamespy
its not for me ive just deleted my name on it!
As for the patch it is turned it into a game for noobs, my 4 yr old has more fun than me as she loves to sit on the AA, she can shoot jets and heli’s without a problem, her fav are Heli’s as she calls them BOOM, well that is what happens to nearly everyone that she spots, a good 90% atleast. Ok they have fixed a few bugs but have made far more than they have fixed…
lol i installed it and now cannot even play the game because it freezes up lol woohoo, SD may the force be with you.
I presume those numbers in joe’s posts are in thousands but I thought there’d be alot more people playing all them games at one given time, do they count ALL servers for every game excluding bots?
i hate battlefield, but take a look at that:
Battlefield 2142 is coming, i hope not before et:qw come :bash:
Joe999, from when is that cache? What’s the link? All numbers I’ve seen from them has always shown more HL1 servers than Gamespy.
hmmm … dunno, was the first link i found about this. anyway, hope the site gets online soon again, then we’ll see.
site seems to work again. i registered and checked the stats, currently they are as follows:
