anyone played the BF2142 demo?

(RivrStyx) #41

I didn’t need to open any ports either or had a problem with the KB9174222 update. I have crashed twice to desktop since yesterday, which I only occasionally did in BF2, and needed a D3Dx9_29.DLL file to play… and see others needed this also. Thought i was up to date on my DX stuff. Forgot to mention before the movement is some clunky crap… as in BF2.

well, to be fair, i didn’t have to open or uninstall anything (just be sure to add ea/gamespy servers to my peerguardian list), i didn’t have any crash at all, i didn’t have any directx problem (and i was under the impression that my dx version was pretty old, i definitely don’t have the latest one).

the problem was really with the gameplay. there’s nothing to be “fixed”, because it was designed that way, and it sucks.

in my opinion, of course. your mileage may vary.

Gamespy Arcade is Spyware - scan your pc with any good av or antispyware program and it will be detected

See what happens when you cut corners on the engine? It’s like the foundation of a house, and you should never skimp on your foundation. id Software technology just feels right. A discerning player can always tell whether or not a game has id’s stuff somewhere in it’s lineage. This is why MoH:AA felt great on it’s Q3 foundation, but BF1942 felt like shit on the unproven Refractor 2 engine. It’s also why MoH:PA tanked: I didn’t follow the news and so was unaware of the engine change from Q3 to Lithtech (the same engine that gives FEAR it’s detached feel), but I immediately felt that something was “wrong” when I played it.

If this is a horserace, BF2142 is hobbled straight out of the gate. ET:QW has a strong bloodline. All that’s required is refinement, and SD is in the process of that training now. The Battlefield series is sickly and should be put down; you can’t train a sick horse.

lol nice analogy.

What amazes me is that EA/Dice could take care of a lot of the minor annoyances without that much trouble. Simple things like the menu taking 30 seconds to load or unload, which has been there ever since bf1942. While the feeling of infantry movement might require a lot of work to fix, you’d expect they could incrementally improve it over 3 generations of the game.

i don’t think you understood my post well. i don’t have gamespy arcade, and i don’t have gamespy ‘spyware’.

when using peerguardian, one must unblock certain ea/gamespy ip ranges because they’re the servers used by the game’s master server, login and authentication – because it’s the gamespy company who manages bf*'s lists and servers.

this is not related to gamespy arcade or any other game browser application. the point of my post was saying i had no security/stability problem whatsoever; all i had to do was make sure i had the ip ranges allowed connection… same as all multiplayer games who use master list servers, and the same i’d need to do no matter which server browser i used anyways.

but I immediately felt that something was “wrong” when I played it.

i know how you feel. it’s not easy to explain, but some games “feel” right to me, while others “feel” wrong, as if they’re unresponsive. for example, while f.e.a.r. looked like a good game, it was so strange to play - as if the whole movement was lagged, even on a fast computer - that i never got into the game. bf2 was the same, and bf2142 is a tad worse for me. games based on id’s engines, on the other hand, always felt right. i don’t know if that’s because i’m more used to them (having played everything since doom1, specially quake*), but i always think they’re much more fluid than everything else on the market. ut is also okey, although dodging stops me from liking it too much… but the rest of the engines just feel strange.

I’m thinking about downloading the BF 2142 demo, but can’t seem to motivate myself. I still remember why I quit BF2 with crazy hit detection and firing cones, and air ownership.

You just cant hit what you shoot at in BF2 consistently, and when missing with 5 shotgun blasts a guy 10 feet from me with his back turned…well it pisses me off, especially when the problem persists through all patches.

2142 uses the BF2 engine, and apparently all the bug’s and engine flaws like non-registering shots are still there. I don’t think I want to fight the engine, not to mention the fun in setting up the keybinds in that mess they call a UI.

C’mon Quake Wars!

if i may add: if this were a horserace, then BF2142 would be a cow, in fact of type EA’s cashcow decorated with twinkling stars n stripes, which already crossed the starting line while QW is a steed, sunbathing in it’s beauty at the starting line, well knowing that it will easily catch on that cow. still, some people bet on that cow because it already started moving …

(RivrStyx) #50

The red/blue name bug has been there forever and still not completely fixed even though every patch says it is. How hard is that to fix? Not sure what their deal is. Maybe to busy implementing vehicle drops or something instead of fixing the existing bugs and long load and unload times.
Also if you read BF2 forums, at least the ones i’ve been on, I don’t see complaining about the movement which blows me away. Almost as if all the hardcore BF players, and there’s alot of em, haven’t ever played anything else to know the difference maybe.

The world needs cow racing. It would be the best spectator sport ever.

(Nail) #52

why are there BF2142 threads here, it’s not a SD game, go bitch on their forums, these forums are for whining about ET:QW demo release

(Lanz) #53

Damn it! Why did you show me that link?! I just can’t stop playing, I loved Rick Dangerous when I had my old Amiga!

(jah) #54

smartest reply on this thread, you deserve a

Pass the time while we wait? Periods are our friends btw.

(GlobalWar) #56

I am already bored of the BF2142 demo (have played it for max 4 hours). Gameplay sucks in a way i can not desribe.
In BF2, when bored, i always had the possibility to just sit on a hillside and enjoy the scenery. To bad the scenery of the demo map sucks even harder then the gameplay.

So about the “pass the time” issue. Next? Quake-wars beta/demo? please?

No, i promissed myself NOT to beg, just wait untill “it’s done”…

Speaking of waiting, this is the longest wait in my life.
Some other long waits in my life for those who are intrested.

Every school year waiting for summer vacation: 10+ months,
Military service: 12 months
My house to be build: 11 months
My 2 kids to be born: 9 months
My new Volvo to be delivererd: 10 months
Quake-Wars, beta, demo, anything: 17 months and counting…:frowning:

But i have learned the longer you wait the better it is :S

(nUllSkillZ) #57

Haven’t played it yet.
But would like to take a look.
Me thinks it will not run with Wine/Linux.

(Desoxy) #58

I doubt that very much, they didn’t even bother to release a linux dedicated server… :moo:

And after playing the demo for some time I made the discovery that even watching gameplay movies of etqw countless times is already more fun… :uhoh:

(Redh3lix) #59

lol, i liked it.

They’re updating the master server’s hardware or something to that effect because they didn’t expect so many people to dl the demo (which you and I know is complete bollox).

Other than a few glitches I experienced at first with connections, I’ve played a good few times now and enjoyed it. Was a good laugh. I will be buying this and ETQW.

*Hat off in awe of Rick Dangerous
