Advanced Movement: walljumping/running/ledge-grab

(stealth6) #141
Where did anyone argue for that? Does “no hopping about” automatically equals “boring”? Because that’s the only thing that Frost and I have been arguing against here…

If you’ve seen the intro scene chase in Casino Royale, “realistic” can be a pretty loose term but doesn’t have to mean “boring”. But if James Bond had caught up with that guy by strafejumping, I think most viewers would have called BS
So what would you think if they removed the jumping, so you can run faster by performing a certain movement with your mouse? Best of both worlds?

Luckily I think everybody has given up on getting that kind of movement into the game and the videos are only used to highlight certain features. (not entire movement systems)

(DB Genome editor) #142

Absolutely!!! If your location was not so cryptic, I’d be shipping you a whole box of cookies right now!

(DarkangelUK) #143

I don’t get this “it doesn’t fit”, are you saying that simply because it isn’t there right now? Ask yourself that question and really think about it. Would you be asking for it to be removed if it was there from the beginning shouting it doesn’t fit? I get the feeling that “no” is the right answer. There seems to be this mantra of simply saying it doesn’t belong based on the sole fact it isn’t there right now and deep down you just don’t want it. Xt is based off a series of games that all had that style of movement, yet somehow it just won’t fit here… sorry but that’s nonsense.

(1-800-NOTHING) #144

my initial post wasn’t adressed at you, per se. it was more an attempt to derail the thread from going “full tilt realism”/retcon (exoskeletons, ev tech level etc…).
i get it, you want internal consistency: you want the movement system to match what you perceive to be the tone/setting/style of the game.
tbh, i’m not seeing that much of a distinct and definite tone atm - at least not in terms of the movement system. let’s just say it has potential.

(rookie1) #145

Doesnt fit because its not that type of game SD did or want to do .You can ask you the same question with ET & ETQW would XT movement as is now in those games ? no because they were done that way for these games

(DarkangelUK) #146

Load of crap mate, you’d be saying the exact same thing if it was already in there and people were asking to have it removed.

(.FROST.) #147
let’s just say it has potential.
And that’s more than exactly the point, people shouldn’t waste this potential by demanding something as overaged as bunny hopping. There could be other ways to improve the movement system and making it more appealing. It’s very safe to suggest something like strafe, and it’s even harder to argue against it, when obviously so many people had fun with it. But right now we have the opportunity(at least theoretically) to go for something entirely new; I don’t understand why so many people are so eager to throw that opportunity right outta the window.

(DarkangelUK) #148

Problem is you don’t know enough about it to suggest anything new and you’re dismissing what others are suggesting based on your knowledge level. Again I iterate, ETQW didn’t have bunny hopping but CJ’s and ground accel combined with ramping was enough to appease that. In all honesty I won’t be fussed if strafing on slopes isn’t there as long as there is something of equal value to make up for it… however we also know the popularity levels of each game that curbed the movement with each release, RtCW and ET had just as many trick movies as frag movies and the tricking scene had a large following, that didn’t happen as much in ETQW and Brink’s was non-existant. Can SD afford to cut off any more fanbase in the vain hope that a new generation is somehow going to fill the gap that SD is creating by isolating those players? Personally, I don’t think so… Xt as it is is bringing nothing new to the table really, and what it could have brought that was new and unique to its style, something you don’t find anywhere else, they’ve decided to leave out. I’m just glad it’s a small minority that appear to be against it for superficial reasons and nothing else.

I’ll be ecstatic when the mish mash of tactical shooters dies a horrible death and people once again start not giving a crap that a skeleton with no bones can strafe at 100mph while carrying 10 weapons in it’s non-existent pockets and bleeds when shot

(Rex) #149

Has anyone had a ground-breaking new idea yet?

(.FROST.) #150

Ah, shiat, I hoped nobody would qoute me before I got home to my PC to edit; I wrote the above on my mobile:wink:

Nope, no groundbreaking new ideas, probably because “we”(anticipating there are more than just me and Djiesse) had to show people at first, that it’s not allways the best thing to go for stuff, just because it worked for a very long time fairly well and everybody loved it. But the OP made a couple suggestions and I also replyed on that directly. Maybe it’s really the best thing to think about an alternative, instead of bothering with what everbody elses opinion is.

(DarkangelUK) #151

Well sorry but that one’s been thrown around far too much these days “old doesn’t mean better”, well sometimes old things stood the test of time because they were good. Regardless, I still propose a mix of the old ones to try and create something ‘new’ on the surface, ramping + CJ and ground accel + wall hops and ledge grabs… I’m willing to leave out sloped strafing but know the game would be better for it if it were there.

The one time you say, XT brings nothing new to the table, the next time you say everything was better in the good old days when nobody cared about realism*. That kinda contradicts itself, yet I share part of your opinion.

Yup, XT is not very unique at the moment, in terms of its gameplay, I think that’s really something most would agree with, but pimping the game with such old fashioned stuff, idk. But please suggest it, do it. I said it and I’ll say it again, everything I’ve said is not necessarilly right, or wrong and the same goes for people who don’t share my opinion. It’s not like we’d actually decide what’s ending up in the game, right? And it doesn’t matter if I was hardcore into ET:QW, or W:ET, or not, since in the end the only thing that will keep players tied to a specific game, or not is mostly based on their subjective gut-feel, if that is objectively reasonable, or not doesn’t matter. When I say I loved AvP3 multiplayer, you can tell me all day, that I’m king-noob for only mentioning it, but I will still have loved it. Nothing is more democratic than the purchase of a videogame, ESPECIALLY when there are so many for free.

*Is XT now new, but in a bad way, or what? I mean you want new unique stuff, but you say the stuff from the past did it best? What now?

(DB Genome editor) #153

No.

Still no…

Absolutely 100% yes!

In my opinion, it definitely didn’t belong in W:ET either. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt to ET:QW as I’m not too familiar with the setting, but from what I know of it I’m leaning towards the same opinion for that one too.

But seriously, these are irreconcilable opinions. On one side the old-timers don’t want to loose something they know and love, on the other side I and a few others have no attachment to this feature and only see it as having a negative impact on the appearance of the game. You can’t make me like it and I can’t convince you that in the wrong context it’s an abomination, good thing the decision rests in someone else’s hands…

(DarkangelUK) #154

I can make (and have made) a far better argument for it than I’ve seen anyone make against it, and that speaks volumes about it’s validity,

(Erkin31) #155

. On one side the old-timers don’t want to loose something they know and love

This is not that they don’t want to loose something. It’s only that they want a good gameplay for Xt.
We have nothing in Xt to replace the advanced movements of ET/ETQW.

(DarkangelUK) #156

Yeah I don’t understand that statement, do I want it because I’m an ‘old timer’ or because I know how much fun it can be? I’ve played a lot of fps over the years, I still do, and I know which ones stood the test of time and were more enjoyable… and the pattern seems obvious.

(Rex) #157

This! …

(rookie1) #158

Depend what you want to do compare to what SD want to do .
-If you want advance movement to jump all over the map at crazy places good chance they wont do it
-making something to do little dancing while in battle might be possible
-making some movements harder to learn to make it more Ah WOW! …there some stuff that they can do that wont spring you on the second floor but be more on ground type …like in melee body fight or some swinging kind of like spiderman do but with some tools like cord

(biz) #159

crouchslide could add a little bit of depth without much complexity. use it to quickly cover short distances, but let it be slower than running for long distances. that isn’t enough though…

as for jumping, how about a choice between light body type (can chain jumps / accelerate) and heavy (can’t gain speed like that, but has more hp)?
might be a decent compromise between appealing to both veterans and beginners

I’m not really opposed to strafejumping, but the arguments against it make perfect sense when your player base isn’t intended to be made up entirely of ET/ETQW veterans
