Certain PB server options are prone to causing game lag. The most notorious is the auto-screenshot “feature”. I turned that on on my server for a while, because I had a couple people I suspected of cheating. Then I started wondering why my client would pause periodically (bad connection, maybe?). Then I noticed everyone was having the same issue (server network card flaking out?). Then I realize the complaints had started that day (I had turned autoss on the night before).

Sure enough, turn off autoss and the pauses magically vanish. Good riddance. It was worthless anyway – I got more “The screenshot could not be downloaded or was corrupted” messages than actual screenshots.

And bani’s point about it using blocking IO is valid (what sort of depraved individuals still use blocking IO? Oh, wait…nevermind.)

Funnier yet is that even being on a PB server won’t stop accusations of cheating, which is probably why some servers don’t bother. Reality is of no concern to the people that yell such accusations (yes, cheats are still possible under PB, but not very likely).

oh but pb does make your game lag when it does the blocking syscalls for checking the pb masters. having your client lock up solid for 5 seconds while PB decides to do a master check, at a critical moment in a game, is not fun.

why they can’t use nonblocking syscalls is beyond me… it’s not hard to do.

I have never seen pb cause 5 seconds of lag. 0.5 of second maybe, usually much less than that, and they are infrequent enough to be lost in the noise of ordinary internet lag spikes. Perhaps it is worse for other people. shrug

Solution: play with a group of peeps you know well (RL friend, co-workers, fellow clan members, reputable clans, etc.)

I personally don’t mind PB servers, although it does lock for maybe 1.5 seconds for me when it checks pb masters.

After several attempted vote kicks on me from him I offered that he spectate me before accusing me of cheating again, by this time his language was becoming gutter like so somebody else must have started a vote to kick him - everybody voted yes and he was gone

I’ve only been accused once, of wallhacking. I actually was camping the north gun with an mg42 and I was wasting any alllies who came in my crosshairs. :bash:

i’ve been accused of having a “stamina cheat” at least 3 times. i was also playing 2v2 one time, and one guy kept implying i had a wallhack (what hack r u usin, lolololollzzzzzzz) after i killed him. he thought i could see through corners.

hahaha, i told him to listen to the sounds in the game. he left.

What on earth is a radar hack anyway? I was accused of using one of those (along with my aimbot of course :banghead: ) the other day. I was lurking by the bridge on fueldump (as Axis) murdering the Allied cvops who kept stealing pants from my colleagues (who were all shamelessly holding the Allies to just outside of their spawn)

For some reason he took umbridge and started the accusations and kick votes, one of the accusations was for this “radar hack” that I “obviously” had running.

So what is one?

Hmmm, enemy CovOps are not visible on your compass mini-map so they are easy to identify. Problem is that this is default on every ET game there is

Yah, it’s a fairly sad indictment of our online community when even n00bz suspect l33t performance to be down to cheats and hacks. The only advice and solace I can provide is to keep to well-administered servers populated with civilised players. It’s a shame that many first-time players are probably being pillaged by foulmouthed buffoons on non-PB servers, getting owned, sworn at, abused, then logging off and never touching an online FPS again…

Kudos and respect to all those players (and there are lots of 'em) who meet idiocy with grace, rise above coarse abuse, and actually take the time to help out new/confused players. We’re all ambassadors for online games, whether we realise it or not. And just think, the n00b you help out with some useful advice may soon be using it to own you, in a vastly humiliating fashion! Won’t that be great! Won’t you feel cool! To be…er…owned…what was my point?
