I mean, there shouldn’t be a penalty right away. You might be repairing when a proxy comes along and you take a half second to stop.
XP Penalty for Teammate Repairing Message
The message isn’t clear. I agree that “teammate repairing” may be confusing for some people. No xp penalty needed, solution is much simpler - change the message:
“Teammate repairing
ONLY ONE PLAYER CAN REPAIR THE OBJECTIVE AT A TIME”.
To be honest, I see less of them recently. But still, the best solution in my eyes is A PROPER TUTORIAL with more situations in it. Repair mechanics are barely noted in the current one. Right now, no matter how clear the “teammate repairing” message is, cod kiddoes will always do what they want.
Another solution, repair tools (as well as planting/diffusing tools) could be disabled if you’re overlapping with someone else. I reckon that’s not very subtle but that would be a clear obvious sign.
I honestly can’t figure out why they haven’t disable the repairs for anybody else trying. There should be no progress bar, no tool and even a message that states that somebody else is repairing and to cover them. That would fix most of the situations.
And while they are at it they could do repair levels so that a person who isn’t an engineer and doesn’t have Mechanic can repair but is taken over for by a person with mechanic and then both of those are taken over by an actual engineer.
It’s just so weird that simple issues that are easily fixed like this exist which affects the game so negatively.

Yup. I use Mechanics perk on some mercs and it’s frustrating that I can’t take over if my teammate without it is repairing.
I usually just speak up in the mic… but yeah remove any indication that you are repairing and instead just have the guy hold his weapon with nothing happening.
Or have the multi-repair = faster repair thing, either way those options are better then what we have now.
@Amerika
It is not really an issue. We are trying to figure a way to make it easier for some players to read the message.
I’ve been thinking about disabling the repair capability if someone else is repairing as well but what if the player thinks his binding key is broken? Or he has to be on a certain spot to repair (just like for some secondary objectives where the toggle plant/construct is only shown after moving around).
If we are going down that road we can also talk about meds not reviving, fire supports not giving ammo or even players not knowing the EV has to be pushed.
The only viable solution is better tutorials.

That’s why you disable the repair tool visually, do not have a repair progress bar up and put up a message that states that the repair is already in progress and then even go so far as to tell the player to “cover them”. Perhaps even an audio queue that says exactly that.
Better tutorials are always good but providing tips during actual gameplay are part of any tutorial system. Many other games do something similar to what I described as a potential solution.
I have to agree with Amerika. Just make a clear priority:
pliers < pliers + mechanic perk < torch
If you are not better for the job as the other guy repairing, you just won’t interact. Extent this to defusing C4 and we are golden.
It seems the devs just flat out don’t agree that this is a problem from the last time I saw it come up. I remember seeing someone say that the message that comes up is “clear enough”? A good portion of my games say otherwise, but OK!
Not even that. If a engineer is repairing an ev a defend icon(shield like you see for objectives) should come up ontop of the player saying defend.
Players should be rewarded with xp for defending the engineer.
While the disabling the repair/defuse option when other people are already doing the work sounds interesting, there are some issues that come to mind.
- It is the end of the match, you are a defender and it has already gone into overtime. The enemy is holding the bomb location so well that you can’t hope for a successful defuse on your own and killing off the enemy team first isn’t an option as you are left with only a few seconds left.
What I like to do in this situation is have a few people pile on the C4 and defuse all at once as a desperation act. Players will die but that C4 defuse progress will not stop until every one of them is dead, which might be just enough time to finish a defuse and win the match.
If people were not allowed to defuse the C4 at the same time, then this would not be possible, as well as cause confusion over who is going to defuse and who is going to defend in a panicked situation.
Of course communication is the key here, but we are talking about implementing a feature for when communication fails, so we can’t rely on communication to solve this problem either.
- When you as an engineer go to repair the objective but notice someone is already doing it just as you are about to start repairing, you figure this out just as you get to the EV then turn around and do something else. (cover, run off and kill something, etc)
Meanwhile the person repairing might be thinking “oh, this person is going to relieve me so I can provide cover/support myself, but they can’t start repairing unless I stop repairing”
stops repairing
So then no one is left repairing for a moment with confusion as to what just happened before someone jumps back on the repair.
Communication would solve this issue as well, but we already talked about that.
- Trolls will find anyway they can to cause grief.
Pick a specialist and idle by the EV, when your team notices that you aren’t repairing they will attempt to repair.
Trolls are trolls… so as soon as your team starts repairing the troll will start repairing as well and kick out anyone else who is attempting to repair, then stop repairing right away again.
This will prevent people from repairing properly until someone else switches to a specialist, or the person is kicked.
Really it would be good enough to just improve the message like multiple people have started.
“Teammate already repairing, cover them!”
It needs to be something that will hit the filthy casual pleb hard, something like:
“EV is already being repaired. You dumb dick”
- Remove Progress Bar
- Add audio queues for the mercs to call out when repairing/defusing and someone else tries to repair/defuse (“I’m already repairing!” or something)
- Implement a 5xp/sec penalty for trying to defuse/repair when someone else is
- Make the “Mechanic” augment take priority over other mercs
@SnakekillerX You can still have multiple people try to defuse at the same time by pressing the button. But the game simply won’t allow you to do the defuse action until somebody is not defusing. Not that this is a good tactic because I can’t count the amount of games I have lost because people stacked on objectives to defuse (engineer or not) and put their heads down and were completely oblivious to incoming fire.
I actually like the idea of rewarding players standing around a person repairing and getting bonus XP similar to escorting an EV and also additional bonus XP for killing people. Audio queues would be great.
I like getting people to do something through rewards rather than penalizing them. I think that is just a better overall option in most situations (game or life).
I tihkn that text should be bigger and when repairing tool dismiss or at least dismiss repair bar for some non engies. Its good idea to reward ppl for protecting engies when repairing by fire support score based on combat score you make.
