Xp and the Points System

(Cosmos) #1

Is XP vital for good gameplay, would you play the game if there wasn’t points to be won? Would it affect how many people played the game if XP wasn’t invented. Would more people play the game if there wasn’t XP? Does XP affect how people play and is there an unfair advantage on those XP saver servers? Cast your vote now.

I think the whole XP thing is rather cool. I love RPG’s so if you mention experience points i basically wet myself in excitment.

I play to win. If a short detour will get me some xp that will help for the next several maps in a campaign I do it. I don’t play for xp, I play to win. That means I need to get some XP to shoot faster and heal better and such. XP is just part of the road to a winning campaign.

You kidding me right??? Of COURSE i would still play!! Duh! :bash:

I often thought that if the xp list at the end of the game was removed people would work more as a team. (this came after beggin for ammo as a mg42 and watching about 4 fo fight in the exit of the caves on oasis)

this wouldn’t work though, because there is an in-game list. AND there is the awards at the end.

It would be nice if you got awards for actually being the best “whatever” rather than that pants stealing 'tard that runs up to the next guy and trys to blast him.

I think XP should be shared equally among members of a fireteam (and if you ain’t in a fireteam - no XP!)

Because what makes RtCW / ET truly great is: the teamwork

Sure, but you could have all the XP that you want, without teamwork you would still lose. If it gets shared equally the good would be punished by the newbies. I know everyone is a newbie at some point but that doesn’t mean that the players who put some serious time in a game & improved their skills should suffer.

I like the XP alot. It gives an extra dimension to the game. You actually get rewarded for what you do. In clanmatches I wouldn’t care, but on publics I think it’s great. My main goal is to have fun & win, getting XP contributes to the fun imo.

As anyone I like to get high XP and be top of the tree at the end of a game. But I don’t EVER let XP determine what I do. I do what I feel is necessary to win the game. If I get rewarded with XP for doing it, all well and good, but if not, I don’t care. This attitude comes from being a Clan player for most of the time I’ve played RTCW, where points mean absolutely and completely NOTHING.

However, I am starting to get more and more pissed off with the XP system in ET. When RTCW came out there were a lot of points-whores on RTCW public servers. Engy’s defusing a team-mates dynamite so they could plant their own, etc. But at least in RTCW points were harmless, in ET, points mean prizes. We’re now seeing a whole new generation of points-whores who make the RTCW variety look like rank amateurs.

The other thing that really gets me annoyed about the whole XP thing is the near god-like reverence that some people associate with it. Some even seem to believe that it’s a kind of AI (Artificial Intelligence) system, whereby scoring XP means you’re doing the right thing for your team. This is absolutely NOT the case. XP is a points system, nothing more, nothing less.

For example:- I’m a Medic. 2 team-mates are dead in front of me, 1 a Soldier, the other an Engy. The Engy, if I were to revive him, could complete the objective and win the game. The Soldier can’t. I get EXACTLY the same XP whichever I revive.

XP does not, and cannot, reward me for “doing the right thing”, it simply rewards me for carrying out a function, regardless of whether the function contributed to the team winning or not, indeed regardless of whether it was even necessary or desireable to carry out that function.

As to the question, would the game be as popular without XP, of course not, because too many people are only concerned with their own performance, and not the teams, which isn’t a criticism btw, how are you supposed to “care” about your team, on a public server, when it’s made up of a load of people you don’t know?

I personally would enjoy the game a lot more, however, if there were no such thing as XP. I hope Bani’s ETPro becomes popular and more and more servers (possibly mainly Clan servers) start appearing with XP disabled.
